Quentin Coldwater | The Magicians

I'm Ireth and I bring you Quentin Coldwater, from the book trilogy / TV show The Magicians. The Magicians, in short, is a show where magic happens but it never really does anything meaningful and it usually just fucks everything up a lot. Quentin is the lead protagonist and for a long time, he thought he was the hero of the story. He wasn't.

Quentin has clinical depression to the point of being in the hospital several times, he's bad at socializing and he is, at heart, at huge nerd. He's been fixated on a fictional books series for kids called Fillory and Further (think same storyline as Narnia, only with a clock instead of a wardrobe) for years, and on the show, they show him coming to terms with growing meaning that not only do you outgrow childish things, growing up means being disillusioned and heartbroken. Over the course of the show, we see Quentin lose - a lot. He's still a nerd, hugely, and loves to read. He's the sort of person, who knows his favorite books by heart, knows all the fan theories and ran the messageboard about it. He's the sort of person who hides at the back of the party with his book and his one cup of something alcoholic and sweet.

He's awkward as all hell and really, this is Quentin:

- died and his body disintegrated in a shower of sparks in a Mirror World, he gave his life to save his friends and the world-
- is completely sure this is just his crappy afterlife, because why would the afterlife be any different than his regular one.

Hi Ireth, I'm Brooke and I play Scarlett here from the little known series Van Helsing, as well as Allie Pressman from The Society. I have somehow, never managed to watch The Magicians despite being told I need to, but you tube, tumblr and RP have all shown me that I need Quentin CR :D

I skimmed the app / her personality and yes! Yes, they should meet up and Quentin can pout at her and be all soft (because he really is) and she can be all badass and push him to do stuff more than just sit around and read about it. Well, Quentin is brave, very brave, and tends to problem-solve by pushing himself in harms way and hope this will be enough. This is also what ends up killing him off on the show.

She's good at pushing and though she'll deny this forever, she's also the type to save somebody's ass if said harms way is likely to get them killed so she'd probably great at both getting him out there and keeping that from biting him in the ass.

They should go explore together! First chance something comes up, or if CR builds to player-run exploration, Quentin is going to find a way to get on that and see what else is on this island and how it's all connected.

it's great to see quentin! i'm so behind on this show but keep up with it every now and then and was so disappointed with what happens. at least quentin sucks at taking his jumper off. hope that stays canon in the game!

i'm not sure how kol and quentin would get along since kol's a loud extrovert and definitely doesn't hide in corners, but i feel like he'd enjoy quentin's card games, book nerdism and passive aggressiveness. he might stress him out like margo does so how could they not get along?? hopefully i get to catch you in the game!

That whole disaster that is Quentin trying to just get undressed like a normal person, is SO staying in game and I hope to get many, many opportunities for Quentin to just face-plant in to things, because he's just that clumsy.

You mention Margo - I mean, have you seen her? And Eliot. If Quentin can get along with those two, he can get along with everyone! He's used to that sort of snark by now, even if all his own retorts are muttered quietly under his breath.

Cards - ha, yeah. Come play with him if there's a deck of cards. He's going to cheat like all hell and he's so cocky about it. It's about the only thing he's really, really good at.

tbh i'm honestly surprised quentin survived the dynamic duo known as margo and eliot. you'd think they'd eat him up and never spit him back out.

please cheat and be cocky, and also fail at taking your jumpers off. i feel like this is the one card game kol wouldn't mind losing since i'm sure quentin's cockiness could be somewhat hilarious?? (also cheating is the only way to play games. kol would respect him for spicing it up a little!)

I have no idea myself. Maybe they thought he was adorable or maybe his love of all things Fillory made Margo want to put up with him? Honestly, though, I thought they'd just like laugh at him and toss him out. But they didn't and beautiful friendships were formed. Ahem, so to speak.

I should have Quentin put in a request for a deck of cards. Even if magic only works a little here, he can cheat and even if it's all gone, he's got the skills with sleight of hand to help him out. But it's completely okay to catch him at it!

Quentin is a rare and precious unicorn, who fails at acting like a person. Everyone should love him!

Oh, so Riku senses darkness? Does he sense depression, because Quentin is like hella depressed a lot, so if you think Riku would sense that if they talked - go for it!

Depression absolutely is Darkness, yep! So if a character is deeply depressed, Riku would be able to sense it (actually he describes it as a scent). I have a permissions post here too that explains it a bit better!

Jump! Jump away! Oh, tv Quentin is different from book-Quentin, mostly because you can't hear his thoughts on the show? So he doesn't come off as such a blow-hard? I mean, he spends most of a chapter talking about just how brilliant he is, and how stupid everyone else is. Quentin on the show is... more adorably awkward and less neckbeard-y? But yay!

yeah, i definitely got that impression. book quentin was sometimes hard to take but i really did love what i saw of tv quentin so i'm excited to throw them together!

Tv-Quentin is the best, he's awkward but without all the things that makes you want to go ARG! at him too much. Still pretty clueless about social-cues and hates too many people around? But he's friendly when one on one, and he means well most of the time. Being dead is fine, it's being here that's going to throw him.

Though that's...about where the similarities end, but I think those are two strong starting points.

It might take a little coaxing to get Jason to go nerd. He's more of a closeted nerd in that he doesn't tend to show that side often, but it's there if you get him on the right topic. Which mainly boils down to video games, books, and comic books especially.

He's also a bit of an artist in that he likes to sketch pictures and doodle.

Quentin never played video games, since he was always elbows deep in fantasy books, D&D and nerdy things like that. But books? Oh, so his bag, baby. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin, Narnia, Star Wars, Fillory - same goes for TV shows and movies, like The Labyrinth, Willow, LoTR, GoT, popculture like Friends, How I met your Mother (his friend Julia made him?), Buffy, Firefly.

The only comics Quentin has read a whole series of, is one with Dragon porn that his frenemy Poppy had.
