EVENT INFO: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT INFO: THE NIGHT WE MET

the lore part

For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.

By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!

Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:

The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!

See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!

All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!

Even if you're not interested in the forest spirits' holiday, the arrival of the aurora will give you plenty to celebrate on your own. This is the most light Beacon has had since the game opened in July, as the green glow of the aurora is nearly as bright as an overcast day. Bask in the constant near-daylight for those six days, everyone!

...Oh, and it's a memory sharing event!

the memshare part

As the aurora dances over Beacon and forest spirits explode into shooting stars overhead, meteorites will rain down from the aurora. They're not technically meteorites, but you get the picture. They're opals! If a person closes their hand around one of these rocks, they'll experience the memory locked inside...

According to the forest spirits, the aurora is made up of their old friends, friends that have moved on to another stage in their existence and have had to leave them behind. The memories dropped by the aurora will focus on a person or people that each character has left behind by ending up in Beacon. You are free to interpret this stipulation however you like! The person left behind can be a friend or enemy, alive or dead, etc. The idea is that this event will remind characters of those they have left behind in death, in whatever way that most resonates with them.

Opals can look however you like, and they'll be turning up at random all over town! There's no way to determine the "owner" of the opal without peeking at the memory inside, unfortunately, and on top of that, while the aurora is active, the opals are bit tetchier than usual. During the event, touching an opal in any way might trigger the memory sharing. If your character wouldn't ICly partake in memories but you still want them to share stuff/see other people's stuff, there you go! There's your excuse!

When the event ends and the aurora fades, the opals will stick around, and they'll continue to be functional! Feel free to stock up on memory opals to do memory sharing stuff down the road. They're multi-use, and there aren't any drawbacks to using them.

•••

For those of you interested in plot stuff, we'll be doling out random events throughout the week, so sign up below if you'd like a chance to receive one! These random events will include things like forest spirit encounters and happening upon opals belonging to NPCs. There's nothing dangerous about it—we're just doing sign-ups so we know who's interested in having us bug them! These random events will be posted either to characters' inboxes or to their toplevels on the event page. You're welcome to sign up even if you aren't planning to toplevel at the event.

Check out the header below and fill out the form to sign up! We'll be prioritizing new players and players who haven't yet had a shot at neat plot stuff, but everyone is welcome to toss their hat in the ring.

•••

Additionally, players are welcome to use this post for OOC event plotting! In fact, please do, as not everyone in the game has access to each other's plurks! If you'd like, you can use the small form below to kickstart your plotting plans:

the tl;dr

  • February 16-21: The forest spirits send off their pals on dogsled journeys into the aurora! Memory opals rain down throughout Beacon.

  • The town is super bright (by Beacon standards) throughout the event! It's like overcast levels of light.

  • Each memory opal contains a memory belonging to someone in Beacon, and the memory is focused on a person they have left behind by dying.

  • The opals will stick around after the event ends! They can be reused to your heart's content.

Cao Pi

[personal profile] pure_havoc 2020-02-13 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
player: Gemini
character(s): Cao Pi
plans: I don't have plans I would love to make plans, either of the receiving or giving type. Hit me up here for one of two flavors:
- let Cao Pi find your character's opal to allow him to see something your character would never tell him about/want him to see but you want to torment them by letting him have that knowlege
- find one of Cao Pi's memories and ask him about it/give him his stones please.
notes: so here's the memories...

Zhenji: his beloved wife who he misses dearly and has talked about with a few people. Likely to be a montage of her being beautiful and awesome, bitchslapping enemies with her mighty backhand or playing her flute in the garden of the Cao estate in Xuchang. If this stone is found he wants it desperately and may give gifts or owe major favors so he can look upon her face anytime he wants just by touching the stone.

Cao Cao: his overbearing father with a metric assload of historical and fictional background for how ruthless he was, puppeting an emperor for his own gain until his death. Memories of Cao Cao won't look too bad, just him around the palace in his fancy clothes or having audiences with other fancy Chinese lords, but there is something interesting to drag out of Cao Pi by having a conversation about this man who is clearly related to him.

Ishida Mitsunari: if you're asking yourself why a major figure from 1600 Japan is hanging out with 220 Chinese folks well that's a great question. Mitsunari is, in Orochiverse (Cao Pi's canon point/death point) his personal tactician and a close friend and confidant as well as his favorite foil. Many snarky retorts will be seen and heard, a real back and forth. Zihuan will have a harder time opening up on why this person is important to him, but anyone who can identify Mitsunari as a figure from the wrong time period and place will be able to unlock more information on Orochi.

Cameo appearances by Sun Quan, Liu Bei, Zhang Liao, Lu Bu, and actual gods Fu Xi and Nuwa as well as Orochi, also possible. He did leave them all behind, though they aren't exactly people he misses. The gods and Orochi inspire much stronger feelings, mostly negative or suspicious.

She's a fighter all right. He can even find a memory of the two of them facing each other as enemies at Guandu, which is where he legit fell in love at first sight. That would cover all the bases at once.

OH MY GOSH.

That's clearly going to be the memory that sticks out to Daylight the most. He's going to gush and question so much.

I'm sorry in advance, Cao Pi.

do we need to actually delve into how shitty Cao Cao is?

because I can give you an epic slam on Cao Cao if you really want it. I mean besides the historical "but father how can people pay proper respects if I don't reveal the location of your secret tomb?" bit.

Please do, that sounds like a really good time.

The Orochi games are so good for character development, you get much more of a sense of their contentious relationship. WILL DO I'll make sure to...huh I wonder if there's a clip of that cut scene still on youtube somewhere...

hey so these two have only talked a few times, and i kindof get the vibe that they're always trying to get a read on each other? i was wondering if you might be open to lobbing an opal of your choice in bruce's direction potentially as kindof a rosetta stone for him to get a better read on cao pi. or i mean. there's no friendly way to say blackmail but he's just the kind of guy to collect notes like that.

anyway- feel free to shoot me a nah if it's not something you vibe with, it's no big deal! i just thought it might be an interesting pivot point in their cr.

Yes actually that would be great. If he really wants a curious read on Cao Pi, I would say find an opal with a memory of his father. Cao Cao was even more complex than his son so seeing through Zihuan's eyes how his father orders the assassination of his rivals and pulls strings to get other warlords to do his dirty work would be...interesting, to say the least.

rubs hands together man i'm so curious this sounds perfect, thank you!

do you know if there's a link to a video or writeup that i could read? or will this be a writeup kind of scenario :'3

[personal profile] pure_havoc 2020-02-15 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably a good idea to start with the wiki for Cao Cao - game version of course, not historical person, even if a lot of the game includes incidents from both history and Romance of the Three Kingdoms. At least the game wiki includes Oroch which is Cao Pi's canonpoint. Eesh it's big though, you can prooooooobably jump down to game 7/8/9 and then the Orochi stuff.

...whoops but yes there will also be a writeup, but that's good to have on hand in case the writeup I do isn't sufficient. I'll do my best without being too wordy!

YES! And it's a perfect time for all that to get threaded out. What a lucky time to be two married men missing their wives.
