EVENT INFO: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT INFO: THE NIGHT WE MET

the lore part

For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.

By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!

Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:

The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!

See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!

All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!

Even if you're not interested in the forest spirits' holiday, the arrival of the aurora will give you plenty to celebrate on your own. This is the most light Beacon has had since the game opened in July, as the green glow of the aurora is nearly as bright as an overcast day. Bask in the constant near-daylight for those six days, everyone!

...Oh, and it's a memory sharing event!

the memshare part

As the aurora dances over Beacon and forest spirits explode into shooting stars overhead, meteorites will rain down from the aurora. They're not technically meteorites, but you get the picture. They're opals! If a person closes their hand around one of these rocks, they'll experience the memory locked inside...

According to the forest spirits, the aurora is made up of their old friends, friends that have moved on to another stage in their existence and have had to leave them behind. The memories dropped by the aurora will focus on a person or people that each character has left behind by ending up in Beacon. You are free to interpret this stipulation however you like! The person left behind can be a friend or enemy, alive or dead, etc. The idea is that this event will remind characters of those they have left behind in death, in whatever way that most resonates with them.

Opals can look however you like, and they'll be turning up at random all over town! There's no way to determine the "owner" of the opal without peeking at the memory inside, unfortunately, and on top of that, while the aurora is active, the opals are bit tetchier than usual. During the event, touching an opal in any way might trigger the memory sharing. If your character wouldn't ICly partake in memories but you still want them to share stuff/see other people's stuff, there you go! There's your excuse!

When the event ends and the aurora fades, the opals will stick around, and they'll continue to be functional! Feel free to stock up on memory opals to do memory sharing stuff down the road. They're multi-use, and there aren't any drawbacks to using them.

•••

For those of you interested in plot stuff, we'll be doling out random events throughout the week, so sign up below if you'd like a chance to receive one! These random events will include things like forest spirit encounters and happening upon opals belonging to NPCs. There's nothing dangerous about it—we're just doing sign-ups so we know who's interested in having us bug them! These random events will be posted either to characters' inboxes or to their toplevels on the event page. You're welcome to sign up even if you aren't planning to toplevel at the event.

Check out the header below and fill out the form to sign up! We'll be prioritizing new players and players who haven't yet had a shot at neat plot stuff, but everyone is welcome to toss their hat in the ring.

•••

Additionally, players are welcome to use this post for OOC event plotting! In fact, please do, as not everyone in the game has access to each other's plurks! If you'd like, you can use the small form below to kickstart your plotting plans:

the tl;dr

  • February 16-21: The forest spirits send off their pals on dogsled journeys into the aurora! Memory opals rain down throughout Beacon.

  • The town is super bright (by Beacon standards) throughout the event! It's like overcast levels of light.

  • Each memory opal contains a memory belonging to someone in Beacon, and the memory is focused on a person they have left behind by dying.

  • The opals will stick around after the event ends! They can be reused to your heart's content.

player: lance [plurk.com profile] howletts
character(s): clark kent / superman
plans: i'm planning on putting up a toplevel for memshare where you can choose to see a memory from clark, kal/superman, or RNG it. each player gets their own starter with specific goals in mind, and these goals must be accomplished for the memory share to end.

have you ever wanted to have superman's powers? that's more or less what'll happen with kal, since you're going to be helping him save the world. his powerset will be halved for these memories, meaning that whatever he can't do, you're going to have to make up for. you might meet members of the justice league here! timelines include anything during the superman anthology films, the kingdom come comics, and dctv's crisis on infinite earths.

for clark kent, congratulations-- shenanigans involving his life as a reporter and his assignments, the trials and tribulations of trying to woo lois lane, having to raise what appears to be a metahuman baby, and a few other things will be in your future. you don't get extra powers here, unfortunately; you'll be living a normal human life by the side of a normal human man.

however! for some of clark's childhood memories, your character will be granted temporary use of parts of his kryptonian powerset to symbolise how he discovered his powers growing up... except it'll seem like you're a hero who's saved him from stupid situations, rather than clark finding out he can do these things himself. most of his childhood memories probably involve his frustration and anger and being bullied and stuff, though. people of interest include jonathan and martha kent, as well as lana lang.
notes: i'll be limiting myself to 10 threads in total for memshare stuff; let me know if you want anything specific (e.g. childhood clark or dad clark or whatever), or if you want to leave it up to me. for other things, kal's going to be IN LOVE with the aurora and having the time of his life, whereas clark is going to be using all this glorious light and the ~peaceful spirits to, er... look around a bit more. :| and get the greenhouse set up for produce and stuff, too!

he's definitely welcome to recognise ol' big blue basking in the aurora around sunrise LOL... the tights are too bright, stick out too much...

supes' memories of jason are largely when he was still robin and way happier than he is now, too u____u
mind_blown: (That's all they do.)

jason's immediate feelings on that: "gross"

but it could be a lot of fun! especially since jason knows clark's here, after making life difficult for Bruce. So he'll be on the lookout for him! Could be fun to memory swap.

definitely down to memswap! i don't think supes and jason have a lot of history in gen so i feel like. any memory you'd want to share with him would be pretty bonkers. something darker to offset the memories of the happy kid he knew might work...

on my end i could toss a kingdom come scenario jason's way to show how shitty clark's superhero scene is? OR ANYTHING ELSE, REALLY.

is it cheating if i wanna give bruce both clark n kal things. is it cheating :(

[personal profile] pearlstrings 2020-02-14 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
uh no??? not at all???
as long as you're alright with him being very Bat about whatever he sees

also i know i mentioned to you once that i was super reluctant to share the whole origin story memory with anyone except clark, who would already know it. but is that still a thing you want to do, or would you like to extra slow-roll their budding friendship without the whole name reveal?
uplifters: (back in the days)

[personal profile] uplifters 2020-02-14 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
please, the Batness is what clark fell in love with loves, anyway :'( i'm thinking for clark it'll be something in his teen years (!) and for supes... i'm thinking of showing bruce either kingdom come batman or stuff from supes' early days...

and GOD i'd love for clark to have that if you're willing 😔 it's up to you if you want bruce to know that clark knows he's ~bruce wayne, but either way he won't be coming out to him about being his best and closest friend / other half / the Finest in World's Finest / etc. SINCE. BRUCE IS IN YOUNG MAN FORM... AND PROBABLY HAS NEVER MET HIM... HE DOESN'T WANNA BE WEIRD... and clark is used to being alone anyway

so honestly we could slowburn whenever THAT becomes something they're both open about either way

puts on some kenny g and opens arms

i'd love something from his teen years but to be honest i'm open to both from supes! bruce has already learned that he has an adult alternate self, so i think if he sees the kingdom come stuff it's really going to put him on the hunt for supes and tbh, i feel like that would be a lot of fun to play out

also i hope you're prepared for how mega salty he's gonna be that clark knew his secret identity first and well well well how the turntables
uplifters: (don't stop me now)

[personal profile] uplifters 2020-02-14 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
!! in that case, bruce can deffo get supes' memories... we can easily handwave him picking up the ~*~superman's early days~*~ shit if you don't want to explicitly thread that out so that bruce has an idea of who this guy is before he sees kingdom come shit? DEPENDS ON HOW MANY THREADS YOU WANNA HAVE WITH MY DUMB ASS, FRANKLY

and >:) bruce's salt is going to remind clark of home, so it's Fine

Since you are limiting it to 10, I'll let Jason have this one. Preference would be for either a Kal memory or a clark childhood memory/kryptonian powerset (Jason was never a fan of bullies).

8D Either way, could be some fun stuff for Jason.
