EVENT INFO: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT INFO: THE NIGHT WE MET

the lore part

For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.

By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!

Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:

The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!

See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!

All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!

Even if you're not interested in the forest spirits' holiday, the arrival of the aurora will give you plenty to celebrate on your own. This is the most light Beacon has had since the game opened in July, as the green glow of the aurora is nearly as bright as an overcast day. Bask in the constant near-daylight for those six days, everyone!

...Oh, and it's a memory sharing event!

the memshare part

As the aurora dances over Beacon and forest spirits explode into shooting stars overhead, meteorites will rain down from the aurora. They're not technically meteorites, but you get the picture. They're opals! If a person closes their hand around one of these rocks, they'll experience the memory locked inside...

According to the forest spirits, the aurora is made up of their old friends, friends that have moved on to another stage in their existence and have had to leave them behind. The memories dropped by the aurora will focus on a person or people that each character has left behind by ending up in Beacon. You are free to interpret this stipulation however you like! The person left behind can be a friend or enemy, alive or dead, etc. The idea is that this event will remind characters of those they have left behind in death, in whatever way that most resonates with them.

Opals can look however you like, and they'll be turning up at random all over town! There's no way to determine the "owner" of the opal without peeking at the memory inside, unfortunately, and on top of that, while the aurora is active, the opals are bit tetchier than usual. During the event, touching an opal in any way might trigger the memory sharing. If your character wouldn't ICly partake in memories but you still want them to share stuff/see other people's stuff, there you go! There's your excuse!

When the event ends and the aurora fades, the opals will stick around, and they'll continue to be functional! Feel free to stock up on memory opals to do memory sharing stuff down the road. They're multi-use, and there aren't any drawbacks to using them.

•••

For those of you interested in plot stuff, we'll be doling out random events throughout the week, so sign up below if you'd like a chance to receive one! These random events will include things like forest spirit encounters and happening upon opals belonging to NPCs. There's nothing dangerous about it—we're just doing sign-ups so we know who's interested in having us bug them! These random events will be posted either to characters' inboxes or to their toplevels on the event page. You're welcome to sign up even if you aren't planning to toplevel at the event.

Check out the header below and fill out the form to sign up! We'll be prioritizing new players and players who haven't yet had a shot at neat plot stuff, but everyone is welcome to toss their hat in the ring.

•••

Additionally, players are welcome to use this post for OOC event plotting! In fact, please do, as not everyone in the game has access to each other's plurks! If you'd like, you can use the small form below to kickstart your plotting plans:

the tl;dr

  • February 16-21: The forest spirits send off their pals on dogsled journeys into the aurora! Memory opals rain down throughout Beacon.

  • The town is super bright (by Beacon standards) throughout the event! It's like overcast levels of light.

  • Each memory opal contains a memory belonging to someone in Beacon, and the memory is focused on a person they have left behind by dying.

  • The opals will stick around after the event ends! They can be reused to your heart's content.

Eliot Waugh // The Magicians

[personal profile] endlessflask 2020-02-14 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
player: Lausanne (hit me up at [plurk.com profile] blackspire if you want!)
character(s): Eliot Waugh
plans: Depending on what sort of interaction you want, I can tailor a memory story ~just for you~

I love memshare plots, though, so please hit me up. Eliot has a PLETHORA of sad/tragic memories ranging from just the sort that make you cry to ones that might come with trigger warnings, but he's also got a lot that are silly/weird/happy/loving. So whatever vibe you want, let me know and I can make it happen. Or if there's something specific you want to know about Eliot, I'd be down for doing that, too. I'm very easy.

notes: I'm in con-crunch brain for the next two weeks so my tags might only come every other day, but I think that's the only immediate thing worth giving a heads-up about.

Hm....Duster would do well with weird memories and he'd love to learn a bit about Quentin even if it's a bit roundabout.

Weird memories involving Quentin. Beautiful. The ones that come to mind immediately are Quentin trying to figure out a magical cure to cancer and subsequently (accidentally) killing a puppy (the puppy was 150 years old and had a good life, it's death was quick and probably welcome), Quentin doing a weird cirque du soleil ballet dance to try and summon his girlfriend, Eliot and Quentin going on a hunt for a missing book which results in two books Getting It On, cursed thrones that make Quentin and Eliot try to kill each other and their friends but it's hilarious because Eliot can't say "usurp" correctly and it's so anticlimactic … There's probably a lot more but that's what I think off first t b h.

sticks leggy up

so Vanitas has been harassing Quentin for months and I would love to use this as an excuse for Vanitas to have to interact with Eliot...

Yes. Absolutely. Let me piggyback on this CR.

he actually knows remarkably little about eliot, other than the one that was here before tried to haze him and vanitas was having none of it

i'm super canon blind but i'd be interested in something regarding eliot's abilities?

[personal profile] endlessflask 2020-02-14 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ah! Let me wax poetic about my strong boy~ Eliot has a tendency to severely underestimate his abilities, but he's alarmingly adept.

So! His discipline is telekinesis, and he discovered this talent of his at age 14 when he was being approached by his high school bully. He thought "wow I wish this bus coming around the corner would hit him" and … Well. The bus hit the bully. He was chosen to attend Brakebills school of magic because he was an extremely strong hit on their magic person globes.

He's also done a lot of cool things, such as create portals leaving a highly warded school in New York State to a pub in London, England. He's created a portable party which is a little ball that, when released, plays K-Pop and has lights and becomes a disco ball. He created a golem of himself out of living clay.

If any of those strike your fancy, I can definitely write up a memory viewing.

anything that shows eliot flexing a great deal of magic would catch vanitas' attention... like that portal thing, or the living clay thing, or the bus! vanitas doesn't much care for "good" tricks, so the party ball he'd be like eh about... but yeah!! maybe one of those? whatever you'd like to write more tbh. pick ur fave memory!!

And voila, one memory made to order. Let me know if that works for you :)

So Cao Pi was already ready to tap the previous Eliot for royalty purposes (I mean not that kind of tapping...the recruiting kind) and is in with Quentin so this would be a good way to catch up. He's always interested in fellow kings and how they might share experiences that the plebs just don't understand.

[personal profile] endlessflask 2020-02-14 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
LMAO I definitely read that and was like [sweats nervously]. But yes. This is all good in my books.

[personal profile] pure_havoc 2020-02-14 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry Eliot, he already knows Quentin is your boy. No stealing lovers here.
endlessflask: (Default)

[personal profile] endlessflask 2020-02-16 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha. Well this version of Eliot would say Quentin is absolutely not his boy, but on the inside, yes, that's true.

I'll keep eyes out for you on the event, or you can hit me up, too. I'll be putting up a top level, so~~

I'll have some nonspecific prompts on mine (when I get it up hurr) so if none of them work for you, I'll hit Eliot up instead.

Fantastic! I'm sure I'll be able to make something work

Happy! Eliot happy, anywhere.
endlessflask: (Default)

[personal profile] endlessflask 2020-02-14 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
cries because eliot was happiest with Quentin

I can give some good ol' Margo memories. Or Mike memories, if Quentin wants to feel awkward.
moderatelymaladjusted: (Default)

[personal profile] moderatelymaladjusted 2020-02-14 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
Mike would make things very awkward. Happy Margo memories? It would also be totally okay with happy memories about Quentin himself.
endlessflask: (Default)

[personal profile] endlessflask 2020-02-14 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
cue an awkward memory of Eliot laying in Margo's lap, staring longingly at Quentin across the cottage

I feel like mosaic time is too obvious, but! Maybe Eliot gushing to Margo about the cute guy who was late for his entrance exam, and the subsequent excitement of hearing Quentin got accepted into Brakebills aka love at first sight lmaoo
moderatelymaladjusted: (Default)

[personal profile] moderatelymaladjusted 2020-02-14 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes! What went before when Margo goes “he’s not that cute” at Quentin before leaving the room?

Jo had to deal with Quentin when Eliot died here so it would be fun for her to see why it was so bad.

I wrote up a little slice of life memory for you, just general gross being-in-love and being-a-family stuff. I hope that does the trick for you, otherwise I can rework it~
