EVENT INFO: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT INFO: THE NIGHT WE MET
the lore part
For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.
By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!
Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:
The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!
See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!
All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!
Even if you're not interested in the forest spirits' holiday, the arrival of the aurora will give you plenty to celebrate on your own. This is the most light Beacon has had since the game opened in July, as the green glow of the aurora is nearly as bright as an overcast day. Bask in the constant near-daylight for those six days, everyone!
...Oh, and it's a memory sharing event!
the memshare part
As the aurora dances over Beacon and forest spirits explode into shooting stars overhead, meteorites will rain down from the aurora. They're not technically meteorites, but you get the picture. They're opals! If a person closes their hand around one of these rocks, they'll experience the memory locked inside...
According to the forest spirits, the aurora is made up of their old friends, friends that have moved on to another stage in their existence and have had to leave them behind. The memories dropped by the aurora will focus on a person or people that each character has left behind by ending up in Beacon. You are free to interpret this stipulation however you like! The person left behind can be a friend or enemy, alive or dead, etc. The idea is that this event will remind characters of those they have left behind in death, in whatever way that most resonates with them.
Opals can look however you like, and they'll be turning up at random all over town! There's no way to determine the "owner" of the opal without peeking at the memory inside, unfortunately, and on top of that, while the aurora is active, the opals are bit tetchier than usual. During the event, touching an opal in any way might trigger the memory sharing. If your character wouldn't ICly partake in memories but you still want them to share stuff/see other people's stuff, there you go! There's your excuse!
When the event ends and the aurora fades, the opals will stick around, and they'll continue to be functional! Feel free to stock up on memory opals to do memory sharing stuff down the road. They're multi-use, and there aren't any drawbacks to using them.•••
For those of you interested in plot stuff, we'll be doling out random events throughout the week, so sign up below if you'd like a chance to receive one! These random events will include things like forest spirit encounters and happening upon opals belonging to NPCs. There's nothing dangerous about it—we're just doing sign-ups so we know who's interested in having us bug them! These random events will be posted either to characters' inboxes or to their toplevels on the event page. You're welcome to sign up even if you aren't planning to toplevel at the event.
Check out the header below and fill out the form to sign up! We'll be prioritizing new players and players who haven't yet had a shot at neat plot stuff, but everyone is welcome to toss their hat in the ring.•••
Additionally, players are welcome to use this post for OOC event plotting! In fact, please do, as not everyone in the game has access to each other's plurks! If you'd like, you can use the small form below to kickstart your plotting plans:
the tl;dr
- February 16-21: The forest spirits send off their pals on dogsled journeys into the aurora! Memory opals rain down throughout Beacon.
- The town is super bright (by Beacon standards) throughout the event! It's like overcast levels of light.
- Each memory opal contains a memory belonging to someone in Beacon, and the memory is focused on a person they have left behind by dying.
- The opals will stick around after the event ends! They can be reused to your heart's content.

character(s): Masaomi Kida
plans: So. Memories. So many memories. Let's do this by character.
Mikado and Anri are Masaomi's best friends. Happy memories of them attending school and being weirdos are absolutely an option. I can do Masaomi raving about love triangles and romantic comedies, dealing with bullies and/or gang members, or blackmailing a teacher who sexually harassed Anri. I can also do very not happy memories like Masaomi cornering and threatening Anri in an alleyway or deciding not to kill a dude solely because he doesn't want Mikado to see him do it.
Saki is Masaomi's girlfriend! There aren't going to be many happy memories here. They will mostly have to do with her being kidnapped by a rival gang and Masaomi not being able to save her! Yay! Or perhaps him visiting her in the hospital a year later while she insists he'll definitely come back to her because Izaya said so.
Izaya is the worst human being on the planet. Mostly because he's always right. Again, there won't be many happy memories with him. Options include him monologuing at Masaomi about how his enormous fuck up will shape him for the rest of his life and he'll never be able to escape it or him informing Masaomi that yes, Mikado, the kid Masaomi is trying so hard to save from the Dollars gang, is actually the leader of the Dollars gang. Isn't that just peachy?
Koji, Horada, and other members of the Yellow Scarves are your one stop shop for fun color gang memories. Their rivalry with Blue Square, them begging Masaomi to return to the gang, punching assholes across the room for being insubordinate, Masaomi being "fired" from his gang and getting a hit put out on him, or even his death.
Celty, Simon, and the Van Gang can all be options too, but they're not as close to Masaomi, and thus would only have one memory to choose from. Celty saving Anri from Masaomi and his gang with her spooky Dullahan powers, Simon trying to convince Masaomi he shouldn't have to go on a suicide mission while living as a dumb teenager in Tokyo, and the Van Gang saving Saki's life.
notes: Masaomi will be attempting to hoard every Anri, Mikado, and Saki memory he can find. So he will be readily picking opals up off the ground just to see what each one contains.

the killing a dude thing would have him look at masaomi a little differently
also they can finally fucking meet in person????

As for the memories, "choosing not to kill a dude" is actually pretty bad ass. For Masaomi at least. Grungy warehouse surrounded by a sea of thugs beating each other to a pulp. Masaomi covered in blood punching the dude in the face so hard his teeth fall out and coolly telling him he gets to live because Mikado is too good a person to have to see a corpse. Masaomi "not being able to save his girlfriend" would literally give Vanitas the only piece of information he needs to fuck Masaomi up: that Masaomi is such a pathetic coward he froze up on his way to save his girlfriend. Didn't even get the chance to try to save her.
Haha, I imagine either one would switch up their dynamic a bit.

Friendship memories are always the best and you know Jason would help him find those. Maybe we can finally get these knuckleheads to talk if he found a Saki memory though. :Tb
The Celty one would be funny just for the "I thought your life was normal what is this" conversation...
no subject
Hnnngh, a Saki memory though. That would be a very difficult conversation for Masaomi to sit through, and yet if Jason mentions his own ex, it could actually happen. But also Celty and her headless fairy shadow scythe and neighing motorcycle. Haha, it's so hard to choose.

We could always finagle some sort of RNG system and just let fate decide.

Masaomi would only willingly exchange happy friend memories, but he would do so with gusto. If you're interested in any less happy memories, Stone can just find whichever one you'd like, recognize Masaomi, and slide on over to give it to him. Pick a memory, any memory!

also sora should definitely find out about masaomi getting kicked out from his gang so he can relate w the time that sora got kicked out of his gang 8)b
no subject
Also, yessss, please. Gang fuckery would make Masaomi view Sora in a whole new light. "IF THIS WEIRDO CAN BE A SHOUNEN HERO, SO CAN I."
no subject
HA HA HA HA (sits down backward on this chair) so about that hero thing... i'm kidding tho sora would be very flattered to be called a hero!! maybe the kh memory can be something fairly heroic? HM what would masaomi consider "heroic" though? are we just talking shounen jump level heroism (PLENTY of that) or is there something specific masaomi would connect with?

i can tell you right now that sora does a lot of getting in between people and monsters to make sure they get away from danger but he really does not do a whole lot of actual flashy rescuing of ladies or damsels or girls or even, like, straight up people? even naminé's the one who ends up protecting him from riku and larxene i'm truly laughing holy shit
i'll keep looking but lord mercy i didn't actually expect this the MORE YOU KNOW
no subject
Pffft, I guess that's what happens when all your princesses have canon boyfriends already.
no subject
can't believe that kh is just a very long franchise about tfw no gf uou
no subject
To be fair, that's a very shounen hero-esque motivation.
