EVENT INFO: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT INFO: THE NIGHT WE MET

the lore part

For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.

By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!

Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:

The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!

See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!

All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!

Even if you're not interested in the forest spirits' holiday, the arrival of the aurora will give you plenty to celebrate on your own. This is the most light Beacon has had since the game opened in July, as the green glow of the aurora is nearly as bright as an overcast day. Bask in the constant near-daylight for those six days, everyone!

...Oh, and it's a memory sharing event!

the memshare part

As the aurora dances over Beacon and forest spirits explode into shooting stars overhead, meteorites will rain down from the aurora. They're not technically meteorites, but you get the picture. They're opals! If a person closes their hand around one of these rocks, they'll experience the memory locked inside...

According to the forest spirits, the aurora is made up of their old friends, friends that have moved on to another stage in their existence and have had to leave them behind. The memories dropped by the aurora will focus on a person or people that each character has left behind by ending up in Beacon. You are free to interpret this stipulation however you like! The person left behind can be a friend or enemy, alive or dead, etc. The idea is that this event will remind characters of those they have left behind in death, in whatever way that most resonates with them.

Opals can look however you like, and they'll be turning up at random all over town! There's no way to determine the "owner" of the opal without peeking at the memory inside, unfortunately, and on top of that, while the aurora is active, the opals are bit tetchier than usual. During the event, touching an opal in any way might trigger the memory sharing. If your character wouldn't ICly partake in memories but you still want them to share stuff/see other people's stuff, there you go! There's your excuse!

When the event ends and the aurora fades, the opals will stick around, and they'll continue to be functional! Feel free to stock up on memory opals to do memory sharing stuff down the road. They're multi-use, and there aren't any drawbacks to using them.

•••

For those of you interested in plot stuff, we'll be doling out random events throughout the week, so sign up below if you'd like a chance to receive one! These random events will include things like forest spirit encounters and happening upon opals belonging to NPCs. There's nothing dangerous about it—we're just doing sign-ups so we know who's interested in having us bug them! These random events will be posted either to characters' inboxes or to their toplevels on the event page. You're welcome to sign up even if you aren't planning to toplevel at the event.

Check out the header below and fill out the form to sign up! We'll be prioritizing new players and players who haven't yet had a shot at neat plot stuff, but everyone is welcome to toss their hat in the ring.

•••

Additionally, players are welcome to use this post for OOC event plotting! In fact, please do, as not everyone in the game has access to each other's plurks! If you'd like, you can use the small form below to kickstart your plotting plans:

the tl;dr

  • February 16-21: The forest spirits send off their pals on dogsled journeys into the aurora! Memory opals rain down throughout Beacon.

  • The town is super bright (by Beacon standards) throughout the event! It's like overcast levels of light.

  • Each memory opal contains a memory belonging to someone in Beacon, and the memory is focused on a person they have left behind by dying.

  • The opals will stick around after the event ends! They can be reused to your heart's content.

plans: Despite seeming like the most sheltered person to have ever sheltered, Ellever left behind a lot of people when she died. And she's really been missing them lately, since lantern shenanigans made her a little more uncertain about herself and her place in Beacon. D: Below are some ideas for potential people/beings memories could focus on! A lot of them feature monster-types because Ellever's abilities make it easy for her to befriend them. Sooo, if you want memories with some monsters...
Fuzz. Ellever's best friend back home is a truck-sized moth that developed out of a not-quite-corpse, a species that's responsible for the Mothman sightings. She kept him from getting killed by paranoid Zier Security employees as a teenager, and they chill together. Sometimes he also plays fetch. Sometimes. If she has a light-up ball.
Ezra Zier. AKA her adoptive human dad. This could be a traumatic memory, like Ezra insisting that she needs to hide herself away because of potential Endbringer Problems, or it could be a memory like Ezra stumbling across her as a toddler and 'adopting' her.
Ambarish Dewan. Ambarish is the oldest of Ellever's half-eldritch cousins, well over two thousand (he doesn't actually remember how old he is anymore), who possesses the ability to rewrite reality simply by speaking. He speaks in stilted questions and vague statements to prevent this as much as possible. Ellever has only met him a few times, but all of them were occasions in which the two had a long conversation about the Nine (their parents), the state of the world, and the monsters therein.
The Wendigo. Ellever naturally has the best relationship with the Wendigo who is imprisoned in the warehouse at Zier Security (to keep it from eating people, since they haven't found a way to kill it). It's fifteen feet tall and vaguely humanoid with a black deer skull for a head, and it hasn't spoken to any of the staff as of yet. She often is present when it's fed and tries to talk to it, so the Wendigo could be a creepy background while Ellever airs out anxieties and sadness about her heritage (aka would your character like to learn that Ellever is the being who is supposed to bring about the End of the World?) OR the memory could be the terrifying day they caught it!
The Bunyip. The other Big Resident of the warehouse, who lives in a modified aquarium-style tank exhibit. The Bunyip has a long, dog-like face, flippers, large canine teeth, and a mottled form good for camouflage. She's 25 feet long and roughly horse-sized. Ellever found her as part of a traveling sideshow, where she had gotten free and killed almost everyone. Capturing her was a frightening memory, too. Or the memory could be Ellever's vague attempts to train her to balance a ball on its snoot. Either way.

notes: These are just some general memory thoughts! Feel free to plot with me here or on plurk if you want something more specific out of the memories for CR development. c:

Hey so. You wanna do a thing? :D

[personal profile] antiwhat 2020-02-15 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yassssss. What kind of a memory are you interested in? Good memory, bad memory? c:

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-02-15 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
That depends, do you wanna reinforce his worries about her previous life, or reassure him about them? XD
antiwhat: (🎵 orly.)

[personal profile] antiwhat 2020-02-15 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Uhhh, welp, there's a lot to worry about. >.> She tends to gloss over the worst bits. And I don't know if she's really mentioned what a shitshow all of her cousins are, so maybe he could get a memory of she and Ambarish speaking about the potential apocalypse that was on the horizon?
worthallthis: (Default)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-02-15 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Let's make him worry more then :D Let's have a creepy cousin interaction then. Might shed some light over the piano-conversation bits, too
antiwhat: (🎵 oh shit.)

HECK YEAH WORRYING.

Is there a memory of Bucky's that would be good for Elle to get? She'd love to see more of his past. :|a
worthallthis: (Default)

[personal profile] worthallthis 2020-02-15 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on what you want. Happy (or at least non-traumatic) memories are, by and large, impossible to tell they belong to the metal-armed dude named Soldat, cuz they're all about a two-armed dude named Bucky (though I am of course willing to do that, it'd just be something of a scavenger hunt to find out if belongs to him XD ).

If you want something clearly related to the guy she knows, it'll be something related to torture, killing, or really rigorous training.
antiwhat: (🎵 thinking.)

[personal profile] antiwhat 2020-02-15 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Hurm! Maybe some rigorous training then? The others wouldn't have any serious effect on their CR, but they would bring about a massive case of The Sads.

I will get to writing one up for her then! ^^

I CAN'T CHOOSE. how does one pick between the handsome wendigo, glorious bunyip, and good ol' dad?

i'm thinking, bc of their lantern convo, that maybe ezra might be best for these two, especially since kol's got family trauma up the wazoo and elle seems to Get It. and hopefully it can help her feel a little more stable in beacon!
antiwhat: (🎵 i'm not saying it's aliens but...)

[personal profile] antiwhat 2020-02-15 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
The good dad, the rarest of cryptids! I love it. Did you want Kol to see a bad memory or a good memory with the dadster?

i'm going to be annoying and say whatever you think might help out with our cr! kol's dad was an abusive guy from the viking era (and remained abusive throughout his very long, long life) so i'm not sure if maybe a bad memory might make them talk even more (gasp, i know!) or if a happy memory might be something that makes elle feel a bit better in beacon?
antiwhat: (Default)

[personal profile] antiwhat 2020-02-15 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Elle has a pretty good grasp of her positive memories and tends to... fudge the other ones, so perhaps a memory where Elle was an angry and depressed tiny tot who didn't understand why she was being locked away from the world? And it would also feature her using her abilities, something she hasn't done yet in Beacon.

that one sounds good to me! kol loves the supernatural (his nerding out clearly hasn't expressed that) and he'd want to do an AMA with her because tell him mooooore. after, you know, the depressing stuff.
antiwhat: (🎵 wat.)

[personal profile] antiwhat 2020-02-15 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
HULK TODDLER IS GO

What memory might be good for Elle to get of Kol's? c: She'd love to understand him a bit more, especially after their most recent conversation.
unpredict: (pic#13778115)

[personal profile] unpredict 2020-02-15 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
if you want her to get something that might help her understand his hangup over his family, she can always see his last death which was at the hands of his older brother, finn, or his siblings klaus/elijah/rebekah ganging up to dagger him (aka put him on ice and shove him in a coffin for several decades) at the beginning of the 1900s.

tl;dr finn cursed kol to die alone using magic because he was annoying him and kol has always been afraid of being by himself/unloved. the other one would probably be more physically violent and show off that he's not exactly a witch! (and he stupidly misses them all, ugh. don't judge him please.)
antiwhat: (🎵 um no.)

[personal profile] antiwhat 2020-02-15 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
D: She still loves the person who killed her (her maternal figure), so. No judgment here, man. Maybe the second memory of those? It would certainly explain a few things about his fam!

I'm up for all the things with these two! DIDNEY WORL Mebbe Sora can see a memory with the Fuzz? He's a good egg. Very good.

DIDNEY!!!! we're actually vibing, that was the one i wanted to ask you about but i figured that seeing Fuzz would have already been taken. Sora would LOVE to see that big ol moth bro!!

it doesn't have to be now but if on the day of you wanna roulette and see what comes popping out of sora's noggin, i can absolutely make something up on the spot! i have entire disney movies she can experience or just him chilling with his bffs, or the apocalypse! it's all there baybee. if there's a mood or a theme you want, let me know!
antiwhat: (🎵 neat.)

[personal profile] antiwhat 2020-02-17 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, not taken. I'll write up a moth memory for you!

Go nuts with whatever sounds fun to you, honestly. She does know Disney movies (thanks for that at least, dad) so it would be funny for her to suddenly see him... experiencing one?? What?? But whatever feels good. c:

Excellent, thank you! I'll tag in as soon as I beat down this mountain of memories I've put on my plate.

I've spun the wheel and she's actually gotten a perfectly normal urban area LOL but it's extremely nice, at least! And if she goes into the bistro downtown there's a small rat who cooks delicious meals, so there's that bit of Disney for her 8^) hope she likes it!
