EVENT INFO: BEYOND THE SEA

EVENT INFO: BEYOND THE SEA
the basics
As mentioned on our July Gameplan, we are kicking off a pretty intense event on July 8th. To give players time to prepare and plot, we wanted to present you with a plot write-up in advance, and allow you time to sign your character up for a particular role. Note that once characters have gone down to the Helix Station, they will not be able to return to Beacon until July 15th when the submarines have recharged and can take people back.
Characters exploring the Helix Base will split into three groups. Each will have a specific focus during their time in the station, in which they will learn more about the Helix Station, the threat they are facing, and what happened to the members of the Night Market. The three groups are as follows: Power Restoration, Resource Extraction, and Key Retrieval.
We are going to be trying something a little different with this event and seeing how it works for us as mods and for you as players. The basic idea is a combination of the back-and-forth of Enter the Sandman (a past event in In The Night) and the collaborative write-up format of an Explore, in which each team will submit a single reply as a group rather than individual tags. We believe this will help us move through the event a little more quickly and allow progress to happen without requiring rapid-fire responses from all members.
In addition to this, there will be prompts for a more traditional roleplay format so characters can interact and explore a central hub area without the restrictions of an entire group. In other words, it won't all be a whole group collaborative explore, though that will be a large part of the event. In fact, it is character-determined how this event will resolve itself — and a part of the event will be information sharing and characters collectively deciding how they want to deal with the threat they find below the waters of Lake Red Jacket.
Please keep in mind the result of this event is dependent on the information gained by completing the group objective. We will be aiming for at least one mod response to group exploration a day, if not more. Please do what you can to be timely about your contributions. Please keep in mind that danger and injury are relevant threats in this event, though players will be able to list opt-outs and preferences in their sign up comment.
Characters can be signed up for a particular group. We request that all characters sign up before the event starts on July 8, so we can have a better idea of our numbers and so that groups can arrange to coordinate their responses. To make it easier for groups to collaborate, we suggest trying to split characters as evenly as possible. You can find a bit more about what to expect for each group in the subsections below.
power restoration.
As a part of emergency protocols, the entire Helix Station is running on limited power. That means much of the station isn't functioning properly, or at all. It also means it's especially dark down there, though, we knew that one was coming. Power will need to be restored to access the entirety of the station, and most importantly, the portal responsible for the greater problem.
- Lauren will be running the show for this group, and will draw largely from science fiction and cosmic horror influences including SOMA, Prey, and OSR folks like Scrap Princess and Goblin Punch. Expect psychological horror, monsters, and SF that bridges realism and surrealism.
- CWs include: descriptive gore, body horror, mention of suicide and psychological trauma, death/serious injury.
- Characters in this route will be exploring the Mechanical Wing of the Helix Station. Characters are likely to learn more about the Helix Station itself, gain insight on its capabilities, and gain access to technical and mechanical resources. They will not be the first to have tried to restore power to the station, and their success will take not just physical persistence but also mental resilience.
To sign your character up to be a part of the Power Restoration Group, please see this comment!
resource extraction.
As characters are well aware, the Night Market was full of incredibly capable experts in a plethora of fields. While it bodes extremely badly that even as prepared and capable as they were, the attack mostly overwhelmed them, there has to be usable weapons and resources to be extracted. The second group of characters will focus on this and trying to collect anything that can help them kill an adolescent World Eater.
- Kitty with her love of atmospheric horror like Hereditary, Fallout, and Silent Hill, characters should expect a bit of anxious exploration with a side of monstrosities. As a note, she has also been on vacation near an ocean, so...
- CWs include: Water horror, drowning, character injury, blood, and descriptive imagery, claustrophobia
- Characters in this route will be exploring the R&D Wing of the Helix Station. This is the place all the many residents honed their various crafts, it is like to be ripe with all sorts of useful things. Though, having those around can be a double edged sword, depending on who finds them first... This area is also notably crawling with Green Eyes, so characters that are willing and ready to fight would be a good choice here.
To sign your character up to be a part of the resource extraction team, please see this comment!
key retrieval.
As a part of the safety protocols of the ship, after lockdown there are three keys required for entry to the portal room. Finding them is imperative to accessing the World Eater to deal with it properly.
- Carlee will be overseeing this group, drawing from Alien, Event Horizon, The Last of Us, and The Haunting of Hill House! Characters signing up for this group should expect atmospheric horror with a side of body horror and monsters.
- CWs include: Body horror, monsters, uncanny valley, violent imagery
- Characters in this route will be exploring the Crew Quarters of the Helix Station. There are a lot of small rooms, living areas, and tight spaces for characters to search. There is a good chance that characters will learn more about what life was like on the station, as well as get insight on what happened to much of the inhabitants before their arrival.
To sign your character up to be on the Key Retrieval team, please see this comment!
the world eater.
The people of the Night Market were correct in their emergency broadcast - the creature that found them is a world eater, but one that had not fully finished progressing to its adult phase. It is still within the Helix Station, and characters will have to come up with a plan to handle it.
- No individual group of the above three is expected to tackle this thing alone. The teams exploring the station will be able to learn about how it got here, where it is now, and some possible solutions to the problem.
- There will be a prompt open to all on the station where characters can meet before and after their team explores a route in order to come together and discuss what they've found, and try to put together a plan to handle the world eater.
- In order to determine the final outcome, we will create a poll during the event based on the options we see characters discussing. Once all have voted (or most, if there is a clear and obvious popular choice) we will write up the results in a new top-level comment to summarize what happens.
- On July 15 the Night Market's submarines will be fully recharged and able to bring people back to Beacon, where they can tell the rest of the town how things went.
above ground
Any character that is not going down to the station will, of course, be staying in Beacon. This is essentially an "opt-out" option, and your character will be able to do whatever they please on the surface, though there are some things to keep in mind.
- Explores will be closed during the event. If any character above water does any wandering, it will not be a proper explore. Our focus will be on the event instead!
- There will be limited contact with characters on the station until they return. As discovered in a recent explore, it is possible to use the radio tower to contact the Helix Station. However, it isn't a reliable way to contact, especially considering the dangers down there.
- Contact via inbox will be spotty at best. As Pluto proved, it is very difficult to communicate with the network from the Helix Station. Have fun playing with this as you like, with incomplete messages, fraught drops in connection, and terrifying stony silences!
- There will not be a prompt for surface characters. That doesn't mean they can't do anything or you cannot do anything. A player run post for above-ground shenanigans would be great! However, our focus will be on the event.
- Characters on the surface will not be able to provide input on the solution of the event. As communication is so limited, it would be impossible for them to be able to participate in the decision on how to resolve the event. If you want your character to participate in the results of this event, they will have to be on one team or another!
If your character is staying on the surface, please let us know here! Any character not signed up to a group when the event starts on July 8th will be presumed to be remaining on the surface.
the tl;dr
- No TL;DR for the signups process! Please read all of this information and make your decisions accordingly!
- Players/characters that don't sign up for this event will be automatically sorted into the surface group.
- Signups close on July 8th when the event goes up.
- On July 15 the characters at the station will be able to return to Beacon.

Green-eyed spirits are a type of forest spirit that, in previous Beacon eras, were supposedly rarely encountered. It's now known that there are several around, usually in more remote areas, and that they are a cause of great concern. Although some seem able to be reasoned with, communication often quickly breaks down as their primary method of conversation is through violence. The other spirits often obey them out of fear. In the past they have done things like lead a semi-coordinated siege against the entire town when their attempts to put everyone to sleep and give them hallucinatory dreams were resisted by several who instead stayed awake - apparently this was offensive to them and so tons of people died. More recently, they kidnapped around half the town and held them hostage in the old hospital, where they tortured characters and force-fed them some pretty awful mystery-meat that led to intense feverish illness.
They're known to trigger vivid hallucinations, have a way of getting into characters' minds and making them see, hear, and even think things that aren't real. Their motives aren't clearly understood as communicating with them has proven to be so difficult, and most characters in town who have come across one know to take them very seriously or risk the consequences.

And boy, they sound like a barrel of fun. I definitely put Reiju in the right place.
POWER RESTORATION GROUP
no subject
CHARACTER NAME: Bucky/Soldat
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: My only limit is mind-control. Hurt him physically as much as you need to and I've got no qualms with other kinds of horror.
CHARACTER SKILLS: Enhanced strength, speed, endurance, and healing factor. Slightly enhanced senses of smell and hearing. Some experience with mechanical repair including on this world in particular, and the smarts to work things out. Lots and lots of fighting training and a small arsenal on his person, also extremely high pain tolerance and ability to continue to function while basically dying. Possibly the most fluent person in Beacon in the spirit language, in case that's needed.
CONTACT PREFERENCES: cacopheny @ plurk and I track everything, so I can add in regularly on threads/PMs
Re: POWER RESTORATION GROUP
CHARACTER NAME: Minimus Ambus
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: Nothing I can think of
CHARACTER SKILLS: Familiarity with tech, combat, bureaucracy, high defense against physical blows, super strength
CONTACT PREFERENCES: Mutanthairything@plurk and plotting threads on the IOC comm
no subject
CHARACTER NAME: matt murdock
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: probably losing another sense permanently, that's about it... i guess i'd like to keep his limbs attached too
CHARACTER SKILLS: matt has ridiculous super senses that only work in a limited range but he can hear, smell, and detect things others might not be able to. he knows kungfu. his badass girlfriend comes along through association and everyone should want elektra on their team.
CONTACT PREFERENCES: i don't do well keeping up with discord group chats, so i'd prefer chatting via comments or a plurk! i'm ~meowed on plurk if you'd like to add me!
no subject
CHARACTER NAME: elektra natchios
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: i'd kind of prefer she not die again so soon and that she keep her limbs and appendages. psychological and sensory effects are fine, especially if they end up being temporary.
CHARACTER SKILLS: elektra is extremely well trained in multiple forms of martial arts (both armed and unarmed, and she'll definitely be armed) and in exceptional physical condition. she can also read and speak multiple languages and her boyfriend is capable of sensing when things get dangerous or when something's off in addition to also being an exceptional fighter.
CONTACT PREFERENCES: my plurk is most reliable and you can find me at vdova!
SORRY TO CARLEE FOR THAT MISFIRE
CHARACTER NAME: Misty Day
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: Permanent limb or sense loss would be kind of a bummer, the rest is fine!
CHARACTER SKILLS: General handyman abilities, physically fit, bilingual, softspoken magical powerhouse (noteworthy telekinesis, healing abilities, teleportation*, etc), has had maybe one or two Fight Classes, ALSO GOT SOME SCHEMATICS OF THE HELIX STATION FROM PLUTO A MARKET OR TWO BACK which isn't really a skill but IS kind of a map so I'm gonna mention it
CONTACT PREFERENCES: PMs do me fine!
*the agreed-upon quasi-nerf when I apped was she could go to anywhere she's personally been, BUT I KNOW THIS KIND OF GOES AGAINST THE 'NO CONTACT WITH SURFACE' RULE so consider me very amenable to working around it!
Re: POWER RESTORATION GROUP
CHARACTER NAME: Klaes Ashford
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: Death I'd rather avoid but I'm up for most things.
CHARACTER SKILLS: Ashford is very mechanically savvy. He's had to patch together pirate ships (of the space kind) in hardscrabble and life threatening conditions and has also been in charge of one of the most high tech ships in the galaxy. He's good with repairs as well as good in a fight.
CONTACT PREFERENCES: Private message here on DW is probably the best way to reach me as I do not have a plurk for RP. My discord is BeeBooped#3208 and I can be reached there as well.
Re: POWER RESTORATION GROUP
RESOURCE EXTRACTION GROUP
no subject
CHARACTER NAME: Zihuan Cao Pi
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: OH UM no permanent limb or sense loss please.
CHARACTER SKILLS: FIGHTER. Well, he's also working from a tactical standpoint of wanting to recover resources and sorting through what is most likely useful to Beaconbits and what can be left behind if they have to cheese it. But mostly he's got his swords and his ice powers and is ready to fighto baybee.
CONTACT PREFERENCES: PM to start but if we need to set up a plurk I can be available for that
no subject
CHARACTER NAME: Reiju
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: Everything on the CW list is green for me!
CHARACTER SKILLS: She's got great fighting skills, especially at close- and mid-range. Also, nifty poison control and immunity powers, if there's anything in the R&D wing that should probably not be eaten, inhaled, or smeared on your skin -- she's got your back if you do it anyway. Also, the mad science background says she should have a good time rooting through what's left of R&D.
CONTACT PREFERENCES: Plurk is the best way to get me, I'm always down to plot at
no subject
CHARACTER NAME: trafalgar law
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: n/a
CHARACTER SKILLS: fighting (mid/long range mostly but will also do close range), great medical skill if anyone gets hurt, plus he can use scan as part of his powers to scan any person or object and see what's inside... and shambles to move stuff around.
CONTACT PREFERENCES: plurk is the easiest for me (~celen) but will get back to pms or discord too!
no subject
CHARACTER NAME: Rosinante
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: COME AT ME
CHARACTER SKILLS: Excellent combat abilities (but sorry kids he's leaving the grenade behind for this one, this is a guns and swords kind of mission only). Stupid persistence and pain tolerance in situations of serious injury, his silence powers which are... situational at best, and a bullheaded determination to protect Law at all costs. Are all of these things skills? We'll see. He's bringing a bag, he'll be a pack mule if you all need him to.

CHARACTER NAME: Will Ingram
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: just fuck me up fam
CHARACTER SKILLS:
haha you're hilariousno physical skills whatsoever, so uh, rip, but he's pretty damn smart and has yet to meet a technology in Beacon that he doesn't understand at least on principle, if not in practice. great with computers and mechanical stuff. basically he's The Science Guy; he has a working knowledge of most disciplines. and is used to living in cramped, environment-controlled places.CONTACT PREFERENCES: leucrotta @ plurk, I also have discord @ leucrotta#3198

CHARACTER NAME: Link
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: Nah, I'm good
CHARACTER SKILLS: Strength, agility and preternatural courage. Good sword and board fighter, let him tank.
CONTACT PREFERENCES: You can PM this or Link's journal (
no subject
CHARACTER NAME: 390-H/Hope
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: body horror of the "stuff inside you that shouldn't be inside you (or growing on you)" type. Teeth stuff or loss of limb.
CHARACTER SKILLS: Noooot a lot, tbh, but she wants to help! She can carry things? Fit into small spaces?
CONTACT PREFERENCES: plurk me or PM me or if you let me know I can hop on discord!
KEY RETRIEVAL GROUP
no subject
CHARACTER NAME: Stone
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: My only limit is mind-control. Hurt him physically as much as you need to and I've got no qualms with other kinds of horror.
CHARACTER SKILLS: Extremely powerful senses of smell and hearing, the ability to filter out certain scents and focus on others from a mixed array of smells, a level head, and the ability to change into a very big, scaled beast with lots of spines and sharp claws and teeth. This will only be possible if the room is big enough for him, but he really would love a chance to try and bite out a world eater throat, if possible :3
CONTACT PREFERENCES: cacopheny @ plurk and I track everything, so I can add in regularly on threads/PMs
no subject
CHARACTER NAME: javert
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: parasites, eye/teeth gore
CHARACTER SKILLS: he's a veteran police inspector with a strong sense intuition and a natural instinct to investigate. he can also fight if need be, with swords and a pistol, but he's mostly here to do some actual detective work.
CONTACT PREFERENCES:
no subject
CHARACTER NAME: Fitz Kreiner
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: Nothing really! I'd rather not get him dead at this point but otherwise it's good.
CHARACTER SKILLS: Primo snooping skills, experience with creepy base-under-siege situations, lock picking, puzzle solving.
CONTACT PREFERENCES: keriseda @ plurk, ping me and I'll be there.
no subject
CHARACTER NAME: Duster
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: No fingore please
CHARACTER SKILLS: Combat, Wall Staples (to help create a makeshift ladder up solid surfaces), athleticism in order to get through rough terrain, quick reflexes
CONTACT PREFERENCES: mutanthairything @ plurk and plotting threads
no subject
CHARACTER NAME: Gregor Allaine
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: uhhhh only take body parts if he can put them back on later and/or replace them (you know, as you do). only like 65% of him works already.
CHARACTER SKILLS: I wouldn't call him a detective exactly but he's very observant. he knows how to fight but only for a short time, so if he has a style it's "ending the conflict as quickly and decisively as possible". his magic doesn't work as well as it used to in Beacon, but he can move small objects with his mind? and talk to dead people if that's a thing we need to do. extremely resilient, you can basically murder him and he won't notice for a minute.
CONTACT PREFERENCES: leucrotta @ plurk, I also have discord @ leucrotta#3198
no subject
CHARACTER NAME: Jill Valentine
OPT-OUTS & LIMITS: Hard no's are detailed descriptions of eye/teeth gore. I don't mind Jill dying immediately (go big or go home) but any limb or senses loss on her first mission would be difficult as she hasn't grown a big enough CR pool to rely on. However, any kind of body horror or terrible scarring/marking? Here for it.
CHARACTER SKILLS: Marksmanship, lockpicking, fast and flexible, decent at fighting hand-to-hand. She's got a steady hand and is more than willing to play the distraction and lead something away if it means allowing the investigator types to get what they need.
CONTACT PREFERENCES: PM is best or
