the basics

Hello hello, dreamers! You hungry little hippos have munched on one thing or another from the feast, and now you're unconscious and tromping around in what appears to be Beacon of the past. Great! Let's skip the preamble, since you've already sat through the November gameplan and the event sign-up sheet, and maybe you even read the big ol' explanation of dreamer stuff that came in response to a question. Point is, check out those links for a refresher if you need it!

the details

On November 16, the forest spirits will set up a massive harvest feast in town, and your characters will be partaking, falling into a food coma, and Nancy-Drewing around in past-Beacon dreamland. Characters have been sorted into groups of three and assigned to a single location in past Beacon, which is where they will spend the entire event. See the tables in the next section for your group assignments, as well as which mod your group will be working with! Once you're done being impatient and skipping ahead to peep the groups, come back and check out this bullet list for details on how exactly this side of the event is going to work:

• Each group will embark on a mod-led investigation thread where they will be able to explore their location. If anyone's familiar with how murdergame investigations are typically run, this will follow the same format, although the threads will be longer, designed to last a number of days (oocly) instead of wrapping up quickly. Here's a couple examples of a murdergame investigation just so y'all can see the format in action. Ignore the content! The structure is what's important! See how the characters are checking out the area ICly while also receiving mod responses as part of the tag order? That's what you can expect from our investigative threads. They're a lot like explores, but it's an actual IC thread as opposed to an OOC discussion between players and mods.


• These investigative threads may run for the entire duration of the event, although some groups may finish early. This should give all the groups ample time to complete their investigation without needing to rush. Each group is limited to their assigned location in the dream, which allows each group to set their own pace without having to worry about keeping pace with other players.


• Time is not to be trusted in dreamland... Meaning, yes, your characters will be trapped in their assigned dream location for the duration of the event. That's, like, two whole weeks! But, how long it feels to your characters is totally up to you. Though threading out the investigations may take the full duration of the event, ICly, it may just take a couple of hours. Maybe you and your group would like to then play with the idea of your characters having to just deal with being in their location for two weeks after they're done exploring, or maybe you want to skip that nonsense and say they wake up immediately after completing the investigation. Maybe you want to do something in between? Up to you!


• On that note, you're welcome to do your own threads outside of the mod-led investigation! It's not required, but say you want to play out your group being stuck for the full duration of the event? Have at it. Just keep in mind they will not be allowed to travel to different locations within the dream, nor will they be able to wake up. They can't communicate with anyone outside of their dreamer group!


• To keep investigation threads moving, we'll be pushing for one round of tags per day, meaning that everyone in the thread will be asked to tag at least once per day. If you aren't able to meet that bar for any reason, please let your group know so that we can either skip you or adjust the tag order! If a player falls out of contact for more than 24 hours, their character will be skipped in the tag order until they resurface. We do ask that everyone do their best to remain active during the event, especially in terms of OOC communication, but we fully expect to have to shuffle things here and there. It happens, and it's not a huge deal! Just let us know what's up. 👍


• OOC group organization/communication will all happen through this page in the comments below! That said, if an entire group agrees to coordinate in a private plurk or in a group DM on discord, we're happy to move to one of those venues instead. Not everyone has or prefers those forms of communication though, so the default is OOC comments on this page.


• The key to uncovering plot info is to just engage with the thread! Don't worry if you/your character isn't a super sleuth, or if you've never done this before, or if you get stumped and aren't sure what to try next, or if your character gets injured/rattled and isn't on their top detectiving game... All you need to worry about is staying IC and having your character explore and react accordingly. We won't let you miss any huge details, and while we will let you miss smaller stuff, the key to finding everything in an area isn't necessarily just to win at puzzles. Roll with the punches, and you'll do just fine.


• And finally, any injuries/death that happens in dreamland will not be permanent! After the event, all dreamers will wake up in the same state they fell asleep in... Probably? It does, in part, depend on what the defenders get up to. Here's hoping they can protect the town!

to be fair, matt won't need his either!! he gets to see for this little adventure, which will be very exciting for him. up until it's terrible, i'm sure.

some idle first reaction thoughts:

1. anyone interested in logging some of this outside of the investigation?
2. the idea of them all being trapped, aware they're stuck for weeks unable to wake up, eat, or sleep, sounds delightfully terrible, and if anyone is game for that PLEASE KNOW THAT I AM.
3. because matt can see he is going to instantly know that something is up, as if the daylight isn't a strong enough indication. i'm not sure he'll decide it's a dream immediately because shared dream is pretty far from his usual experience, but he's not going to think this is some spirit instigated hallucination either.

2) MAN not sure how they would realize it exactly but def down for some of that old fashioned low-key "i've gotta wake up!!" panic

3) eliot has dealt with dream magic before and would be able to tell fairly quickly it's a dream. since his trade is physical magic, things would "weigh" differently, so to speak. things already "weigh" different in beacon normal because his fire magic doesn't feel quite the same (light has a feel to it), so it would also be different once he can use it again and the also know how it should feel versus predictably feel. ...if that makes sense

2) Stone is just happy he can bask a little bit, he's cold all the time with no sun. If he doesn't have to sleep, that's actually not terrible, he has insomnia issues anyway :B

3) this will be relatively unfamiliar to Stone from the inside, but he's dealt with people stuck in spells before from the outside?

i am glad stone wouldn't freak out but matt would highkey hate it. i think the answer to this one miiiight depend on how the investigation goes! so we'll see if we get a chance to play with it, but i am more than game if we do!

i think between matt seeing and eliot's awareness of dream magic, they should have a good clue on that front!

how attuned are your guys' chars to solving shit and all that jazz? eliot's a genius in his canon, so. he likes solving things and being the center of attention at the same time... (feel free to knock him down a peg)

matt is a pretty smart guy! columbia law graduate & everything. a lot of his deduction skills come from his senses tho and at this point i don't know how well they'll work in this situation!

Stone is... not a brainiac. he's not DUMB, and he is experienced and kinda-sorta wise in social matters, but he's not had to do a ton of actual investigating into things, and he's literally from a hunter-gatherer society of dragons, so he tends to default to instinct. he does in fact also have enhanced senses of smell and hearing, though, so there's that?

he unfortunately has a lot of really sharp spines up on his back, BUT he is big enough to carry people in his hands! and also there is a ridge along his collarbones and shoulders that make really good hand- and foot-holds to cling to

honestly, I have kind of the same goal. eliot is actually pretty hard to break without the exact triggers and idk if the mods can figure that out, but i'm ready for whatever they throw my way 👀
