LOCATION DISCOVERY: DOWNTOWN

the basics

Good news, Beacon bits! Kuai, Maes, and Rosinante have discovered a brand new core location: Downtown Beacon!

But here's the thing: This new location is quite large, and there's plenty of neat stuff left to investigate. In fact, all of the locations in downtown will need to be investigated before they'll open to the game at large! Right now, only the hotel (yay new housing!) is open for business. Check out the details below/on the setting page to see which locations are still in need of exploration.

We also want to point out that this is a great opportunity for characters who might not normally venture out on an exploration to get involved in unlocking the town! Traveling to the downtown area is now both safe and easy as the paths have been uncovered, so characters won't need to brave Beacon's wilderness to investigate downtown. It's a perfect exploration destination for, say, characters with fragile nerd bones or zero survival skills.

That said, we do ask that you all attempt to coordinate exploration plans as opposed to diving straight in! There's a lot to uncover, but there's a lot of you, as well. Working together both OOCly and ICly and making space for players that haven't had an opportunity for much plot stuff yet is stuff we'd love to see! Granted, y'all are pretty tops about that kind of thing already, but it's still worth saying.

In order to kickstart that teamwork, feel free to use this post for exploration planning! Here's a form that you may use to get started:

Please remember that the usual exploration rules apply! In addition, each player may only explore downtown once for the time being in order to give everyone a chance to get involved. If exploration requests die down and there are still areas downtown to be uncovered, we may lift that rule. We'll make an announcement in the OOC comm should that happen.

And one more thing to note: Characters are always welcome to re-explore areas that have already been unlocked on the map. If you ever spot a detail on the setting page that makes you go "hm!" and you want to check it out more thoroughly, feel free to hop on down to the explorations page!

The description of this location is detailed below, and it has already been added to the map and the settings page.

If you have any questions, please let us know in the comments!

the details

This once-bustling city center is just a three-block stretch of road with old brick buildings lining either side. Back in Beacon's heyday, this quaint little district would've been a great place to spend an evening, but now, it's dark and quiet and lifeless, just like the rest of the world. The emptiness resonates more deeply here, though, perhaps because of all the dark windows overlooking the long-dead streetlamps and empty storefronts. An outdoor patio juts out from one restaurant, tables ready and waiting for patrons that may never come. Distantly, the sound of waves crashing against the cliffs floats in from the north, a sound that would've never been heard over the ambiance of the town in life.

There are quite a few notable locations in downtown Beacon:

The Landmark Inn
A ritzy hotel in the center of it all, the Landmark provides residents of Beacon with high class room and board. A large fountain sits in front of the hotel, though it's not currently operational.

The hotel itself is a few stories tall, and this ground floor seems to be made up of just the reception lobby and what looks to be an upscale restaurant just past the front desk. There's activity in the restaurant, too! No diners, but a small waitstaff of forest spirits is busy organizing silverware and menus, and there's quite a lot of hub bub coming from the kitchen. The hotel restaurant will need to be explored before it's available to the public.

As far as the rooms go, they're all upstairs, and characters may wander freely through the hotel's floors, though all of the guest rooms are locked unless you check in with The Concierge at the front desk! These interactions can be handwaved—point is, it works like a normal hotel in that you need a key to get into the guest rooms, and getting a key requires you to check in. Characters may temporarily check into the hotel, but more importantly, they can live here! The Concierge won't issue keys for snooping in other characters' rooms, though, so don't even try!!!

A large logbook can be found at the front desk, which appears to be a record of past and current guests. The book is quite thick, and all of the entries are written in the red ink from a fountain pen, though they're all in different handwritings. Inspecting the book will reveal that all the pages up to this point have indeed been filled out by former guests, but they've all been crossed off and listed as checked out. Attempting to read the guest record will require—you guessed it—an exploration!

The hotel's upper floors can be accessed via the stairwell, or characters may attempt to call the elevator! The elevator will need to be explored before it's available to the public.

For more information about the hotel's guest rooms, please see the housing page.

The Delft
The Delft seems to be a theater of some kind. "HEAR FEAR ! EYES DIES" is spelled out on one side of the marquee out front, and on the other, "H AK I YA YO". This location will need to be explored before it's available to the public.

Shopping Center
A small, indoor shopping center comprised of a variety of stores, though there's no telling what's in there from the outside. This location will need to be explored before it's available to the public.

Courthouse
The door of the courthouse has been barricaded with planks from the outside. This location will need to be explored before it's available to the public.

Kickaxe Brewing Company
KBC is a local brewery inside of a building that looks to have been a small factory at some point. This location will need to be explored before it's available to the public.

The Fallout Shelter
This nightclub can be found on the second and third floors of the shopping center. This location will need to be explored before it's available to the public.

Storefronts
There are a handful of other small storefronts along the road as well, but they're locked up for the moment, devoid of any indication as to what may be inside. These locations do not need to be explored! They'll all be made available once the other downtown locations have been thoroughly investigated.

oh, also

Unlocking downtown has also unlocked... The Parade. The full details on the Parade have been posted to the calendar page, as the Parade will continuously move around town based on the time of month. The short version: The Parade is a roaming "monster" that will kill the crap out of you and make explorations in certain parts of town much more difficult! That said, it's also opt-in save for during explorations. Check out the description for more details.
