EVENT INFO: TURN THE LIGHTS OFF


the basics

On January 20, characters will start to notice that the flame of their lanterns have changed colors. Up until the end of the event, characters will experience a wide range of physical, emotional, and mental changes that correspond to these colors. A brief description for this is also available in the January gameplan, but read on for further details on what can be expected!


the details

Lantern malfunctions are now a permanent game mechanic that can be utilized at any time. Starting January 20th, lanterns begin to show more critical, previously unseen signs of wear and tear. Even if your character has not been irresponsible with their lantern, they're not immune from the effects that sweep through Beacon. Depending on what hue the light of your lantern takes on, characters will experience a variety of effects that will change their body, their mind, and their perception of their surroundings. The introduction of this mechanic is meant to provide players with the means of choosing their own style and severity of horror, so there's plenty of unique ways that this can be played with. Curious about how all of this works? Here's a list of details that should make things more clear:

  • Currently, lanterns effects fall into three different categories: physical, emotional, and psychological. Each of these are represented by a different color (red, blue, and green respectively) and have an available effect in gentle, medium, and more extreme horror. That makes nine different total effects, all unique from one another, that can be played with! The tables below lays out each effect in further detail...and just because that's all that's available now doesn't mean there won't be more presented later down the line.

  • Lanterns do not have to have a physical flame to experience these malfunctions.If your character has a lantern that looks or operates differently from a standard lantern, you can play around with how the effects physically appear. As long as the changes made still generally follow the red/blue/green color scheme, that's all that matters, so feel free to get creative!

  • What changes your character experiences is up to you! There's no rule that determines which effect you get to play with; they're completely free to do with what you will. You can RNG it, pick your personal favorite, or pick one that you think would be most meaningful for your character specifically. Likewise, you're not locked into whatever you choose initially, so if you change your mind for any reason, there's no need to regret it! It's completely acceptable and within your right to stop playing with the effect at any point, reverting your character back to normal or choosing a completely different one instead.

  • This event is completely opt-in. Not all characters have to experience lantern changes, as it's a mechanic that's meant to operate as a random, unpredictable occurrence. If you aren't comfortable with any one effect or it isn't your cup of tea, that's perfectly fine! The point of this event is to introduce a way to cater the game's level of horror to your own personal preference. If you're happy where you are, there's no need to force yourself to change your play style, and no explanation is required for your decision.

  • There's no set duration for how long your character will remain under the influence of their altered lantern. They can experience these changes for the full event period or for as short as a few hours of a single day, whatever makes you most comfortable or gives you the variety of threads that you're looking for.

  • Any of the effects that you choose to play with must be staggered and cannot be stacked. Characters will only experience one of the nine effects listed below at a time, but how any of them are presented is completely at your discretion. You can choose to change between effects at will, blasting through as many as all of them, as long as they don't occur simultaneously!

  • There are no rules in how you choose to scale your effects. You can take a milder effect and gradually go heavier, start heavy and have it go backwards, or just stick to one level of severity. The only limit is your own preference!

  • Characters can keep these changes after the event has ended. An official page will be added to the navigation with the information about the lantern effects that can be referenced at any point. OOCly, it's up to you to keep playing them or get rid of them, but ICly characters will have no explanation as to why this has happened or if they're really "cured". At least, not yet. All they know is that this is a completely unpredictable syndrome that can recur at any given point in time.

the lanterns

RED LIGHT
TALL GRANDE VENTI
Your lantern is a light, pastel pink, with only superficial damage. As days pass, you start to feel minor aches and pains as you begin, slowly but surely, to change. The changes are small, but striking. Maybe the whites of your eyes have turned black, or maybe your teeth are sharpening into jagged points. A tail sprouts from the base of your spine, or horns break through your skin as they grow outward from your skull. Your lantern is a passionate shade of vibrant red, the glass webbed with spiderweb cracks. There's a deep ache throbbing somewhere inside of you. Throughout the coming days you seem to change, but the changes are mangled and warped. Maybe your arm develops patches of scales, or maybe feathers sprout out of your scalp. In some capacity, you find yourself stuck between something halfway yourself and halfway something other. Your lantern is glowing a deep, dark red, and the cracks that streak across its surface seem as if they'll cause it to break apart at any moment. Everything hurts. Very quickly, too quickly, your body transforms. Half of yourself, whether it's from the waist down or disturbingly scattered across the whole of your parts, is becoming something new. Maybe your legs shrivel and new appendages sprout until you're left with the limbs and abdomen of a spider. Maybe one side of you becomes thick and heavy with coarse fur and leathery skin.


BLUE LIGHT
TALL GRANDE VENTI
Your lantern is a light, pastel shade of blue, with only superficial damage. You feel a bubble of laughter stuck in your throat, a lightness to your thoughts and a pep in your step. It's a pleasant feeling, this persistent optimism. Only, the freeing sensation of being so carefree can start to become a burden when, in the face of loss, tragedy, or danger, all you can do is smile. Pain, death, and trauma all inspire laughter. Your lantern is a calming shade of vibrant blue, the glass webbed with spiderweb cracks, and your whole body feels like it's alive with alarm. You know something bad is going to happen, and you can't stop looking over your shoulder. This is the calm before the storm, you're certain, and you can't sleep. How can you, when you have to remain alert and prepare for whatever-it-is that is surely about to strike? Your lantern is glowing a deep, dark blue, and the cracks that streak across its surface seem as if they'll cause it to break apart at any moment. You feel angry, angry at everything and anything you can think of. The world, your circumstances, yourself, even your loved ones. It takes all your effort not to lash out with even the mildest of perceived provocations, as if you're looking for an excuse to vent your grievances.


GREEN LIGHT
TALL GRANDE VENTI
Your lantern is a light, pastel green, with only superficial damage. Time feels strange. Sometimes, it seems as if everyone around you is moving and speaking too slowly. Sometimes, too fast. Sometimes, it's as if everyone is frozen. Perhaps you experience only one of these sensations, or perhaps they alternate in rapid succession. When time stops, it can suddenly speed up to catch up to real time, as if a taut rubber band has been suddenly released. Your lantern is an energizing shade of vibrant green, the glass webbed with spiderweb cracks. You're not sure you recognize yourself. Your thoughts, your voice, sometimes even your own face feel foreign. Do you question your motivations or your past? Something about you, whether it remains constant or changes, feels to you as if it's been warped. Your lantern is glowing a deep, dark green, and the cracks that streak across its surface seem as if they'll cause it to break apart at any moment. Something is wrong with the world around you. Beacon's surface seems to bend and stretch like the reflections seen in the mirrors of a fun house. You may feel as if there's a slope where the surface is flat, or a sheer drop where none exists. It might leave you dizzy or disoriented, sick from vertigo, or uncertain of what visions you can trust.


the tl;dr

  • January 20th: the lanterns begin to change.

  • January 29: the event ends; many lanterns return to normal but some remain changed, depending on player discretion!

Would a red lantern effect be able to shift Link into wolf form at "random" or is it more of a body horror thing?

Also, during the event, if someone were to run from their lantern or generally stray far from it, would the event effects persist? Or is it only near their lanterns?

plans: For now, we're going to take a trip through the blue and green spectra. Rosi hasn't had a chance to get properly pissed off at things yet but that temper keeps threatening to flare up and this time it will spill over, starting him off at a nice vivid venti blue. He has a lot to be pissed off about in this place so this is still an opportunity to like, angrily commiserate, but with a very short fuse he might just yell at/punch at you, so this is a good option if you want a fight also. He's tanky, he'll be fine.

As he fights for control of whatever is going on he's going to sidestep into grande green with a good existential crisis right out of some of his worst nightmares. The twisted version of himself he can't help but think about is a version of himself that never left the Red Line; or at least, a version who agreed with his brother. A version who should have been a god above all you commoners, as was his birthright. This will probably have more of an impact for CR that already knows him because dude when the fuck did you get so arrogant? He will hate this. He will be thinking about this for a long time afterward. This is the worst of the three for him personally even if it may not look so bad to others on the outside.

But you know what? At the end of it all, it's just funny, isn't it? There's nothing anyone can do about any of this but laugh. Tall blue is where he'll end the event, having surely gone totally bonkers, but it's okay. It seems like he's having a delightful time. He's not, but he can't really show you any other emotion right now.

notes: I expect I'll pull from some of what's in his warnings list at various points in this event so please have a look and let me know if there's anything I need to avoid with you/your character.

plans: I am thinking that Ashford's lantern will go red, starting at tall and moving into grande. The quart of his body that is covered in burn scars already will start to form painful bony growths/spines growing out of his skin making it difficult for him to use his right arm or turn his head. This will lead to bursts of anger or paranoia given his world's history of protomolecule causing horrible deformities and then death.

plans: I'm going all out for this. Midge's emotions are already all over the place thanks to her situation, so I'm going blue for her! She's going to start tall, which lbr will be hard to tell from her usual peppy demeanor, but it will slide gradually into venti. She's going to lash out at a lot of people, grow angry at them for little to no reason--if you want Midge to fling some psychologically damaging quips your way, let me know. She's going to be alternating between a crying mess and an angry, vengeful bitch, essentially. If she's in the kitchen, she might very much reach for a knife to prove her point if that's an angle y'all wanna go to!
notes: Midge is a pretty observant person and will absolutely drag people down with her. If there's a chance someone's psychological weakness bleeds through in something they do that she'd have seen and you want to play with it, let me know! Let's get some emotional wounds (maybe physical?) open!

plans: For the majority of the event, Sora's lantern will be normal. However! Although I don't see myself playing with the effect a lot this week, his lantern will occasionally turn grande green, and it will continue to crop back up after the week is over. After the event is over, Sora's lantern will be grande green whenever he doubts his purpose and his identity. It will only change back to its normal daylight glow if he feels confident about who he is... whoever that ends up being. :)

As to which identity warp he'll be taking (or, more accurately, the person he will think he is)... Meet Skyler Veracruz, the worst kid you know. He has an opt out here. I 100% recommend everyone who intends to have CR with Sora in the future to go look at and consider Skyler's opt out post seriously. This is not a friendly kid and I do not want to blindside anyone with his particular brand of violent hedonism. If you need current samples of how he plays, I have a few threads going with people here, here, and here.

For event specific purposes, Sora will be available as moral/emotional support, a general saves-people-from-themselves sort of guy, or a good vector for someone who needs someone else to say hey let's not blow things up! Again, since I will be playing with this mechanic a lot in the future, I don't see the point of localizing all the fun to one week. If you need a hero, Sora's got ya! Whenever Skyler's not in the driver's seat that is haha.... Hit me up if you need him!
notes: Just for funsies, I might take him down the red track, and that will be just some Rage Form aesthetics! They shouldn't affect him mentally, though (mcelroy voice) unLESS. They'll just be there to freak him out a little.

plans: i'm going to take it easy for this event. javert's only just recently recovered from the effects of the hint-o-matic, where he spent a month wanting to hurt people, and i don't want to burn myself out on too much horror!

that being said, his lantern is going to be grande blue for at least part of the event. he may get a little overprotective around some people, wanting to save them from threats that only exist in his head. with others, he may be a little more suspicious of what they're doing and get confrontational. he won't be under these effects all the time, though, just for a few hours at random intervals. if you'd like to do something with him in his normal state, hit me up for that as well!

plans: For the duration of the event, Ellever will be upgrading from a tall to a grande red lantern. Specifically, it's going to bring out the Other half of her who normally stays hidden and tucked away by a lot of childhood conditioning (thanks, physical changes). At first (tall), her eyes will turn solid black, which normally only happens when she's purposefully using her powers. She'll be less tolerant and apologetic about being Half Human and awkward, instead just getting irritated if anyone questions her Being Weird. Then she'll steadily shift to a grande lantern: her gums and teeth will also turn black, her blood (if any of that escapes her) will be black, and her hair will turn golden blonde. She'll be very In Tune with the universe at this point thanks to shifting to her eldritch side, so she might say some incredibly unsettling shit if people strike up a conversation please do. I may go further with her appearance if it seems like it fits, we shall see!
notes: For plotting purposes, if you need a catalyst for your character Losing It, Ellever is completely available to be weird and nihilist at them and truly unlike the other half of her.

plans: I'm particularly looking at blue and green lights for Kol, with a primary focus on blue. No physical changes for this guy. Without the lantern effects, Kol is already pretty paranoid, quickly prone to anger, and reckless, and these characteristics are extremely heightened because of his state as one of the first vampires in existence, so I kind of want to play into that since he's keeping himself under Lock and Key and being well-behaved.

I'm thinking of outing Kol as a vampire to a select few using this event, and maybe using it as my way to tap into Kol's soul hex that essentially makes him bloodthirsty and violent that I've been trying to build up CR for.

Blue Light — Venti
  • Because Kol's an Original Vampire and capable of a lot of things, I'm thinking of having him be super hostile, super emotional, and super angry, and quite possibly attack someone? I don't want him to be outed if he attacks a character, just FYI. He doesn't respond kindly to that and I kind of like him living out his witch fantasy despite lacking the ability to tap into magic.


Blue Light — Tall
I want to start dealing with some emotional stuff to start propelling Kol forward, so I'm thinking:
  • Since he's lost his girlfriend from home, he's been concealing and not feeling, and I kind of want to get him to deal with that with a few people since he'll never speak on it unless I have an opportunity to force him to. He feels guilty and lost, and he wants to be worth someone's love, so he's a bit insecure and I want this to be an opportunity where he begins to grow confident in the fact he 1) deserves to be loved and 2) deserves to live.
  • His most recent canon death was at the hands of his older brother is something he doesn't speak on and is something I'd like him to actually acknowledge hurts him. He's lost decades of his life because Klaus and his siblings put him on ice by daggering him, and he's got a lot of resentment there that would be cool if someone validated him for feeling as angry as he does. I want to shed some more light on his family's fucked up nature to some! Kol's been painting a really rosy picture otherwise and hasn't been dealing with this Middle Child and I'm Not Good Enough syndromes.


Green Light — Grande
  • Well, Kol spent an unknown amount of time in someone else's body, so I'd love to play with that and have him see/hear himself as Kaleb Westphall (who is a different English white guy)! Again, it kind of ties into my theme here of Kol feeling like he's not good enough. Someone tell him he's pretty.


Primary focus is Blue / Tall tbh. I do plan on having Kol snap out of this, and he's definitely available to assist in other character's little arcs for this event. My focus is getting to do a few of these since it'll help propel him forward for me!

notes: Detailed permissions, especially vampire-related information here. I don't want Kol outed as a vampire as he's been meticulous in making people think he's a witch, although I do want some interpersonal aftermath with it later to help build on CR and maybe start an arc for him where he comes to accept that being a vampire isn't all that bad (he hates it). LOVE YOURSELF, KOL.

plans: I am skirting away from blue for Bucky, because his emotions are unstable enough as it is and I'm trying to get them more stable not less, and probably giving him some of the green. Hughes - GRANDE/TALL GREEN -- Dropping him straight into it, because I have wanted to confront some of Maes’s fears for awhile now. Lots of second guessing of his past and especially of how Gracia/Elysia truly feel about him. Might also play with the idea that he’s somehow turning into Envy (the whole ‘don’t recognize yourself’) thing would be fun and ramp up Maes’s issues there. Might drop down to Tall after peak exhaustion from all this.

Grace - GRANDE RED/VENTI BLUE The Red is just for fun, but I plan on having Jason slowly take on the appearance of a minotaur/bull. This is for two reasons, one is the cow’s association with Hera/Juno and two because during his encounter with Hercules the former demigod made him and Piper go fight the bull-man, Achelous, and take his horn. He’ll grow horns himself, a cow tail, and maybe even hooves (Achelous didn’t have all that, but what’s the fun of transforming if you just do horns?).

I do this so he’ll be reminded of Hercules and Achelous as we move into blue -- which is when he’ll get angry. Really, really angry. And that’s one of his biggest fears of all, getting angry like Hercules and hurting someone...again like Hercules. So if someone wants to play into that and help me make Jason feel TERRIBLE for what he might do. Let’s hash this out.

plans: Red Grande, Riku will be gaining some bestial/monstrous changes, like sharper canines/eye teeth, slitted pupils that reflect only true sources of light (lanterns, the bonfire, and so on), his left arm will transform from the elbow to his fingertips into a dark, thick clawed appendage with dark bristles. Personally just testing this out and if it turns out to be fun I might make it a repeated thing.

skyler has a very concrete reason to want riku either dead or very very hurt! while sora's been cool with trying to feel out vanitas and giving riku his space, once skyler understands the situation and knows riku's somewhere close, he'll probably take steps to at least track him down. if this is something you want to play out, let me know! otherwise, i'll go ahead and say that sora catches skyler at it and takes steps to make sure riku's safe.

plans: Link will be hovering around grande/venti green. His vivid hallucinations will cause him to see a demon that tries to encourage him to act on the worst, darkest aspects of his power lust. Sometimes he will actually see himself as the demon. The fact that said demon will look just like him probably doesn't symbolize anything.

Despite all this, he will be trying to defy the demon and maintain sanity and he will be attempting to help anyone else he sees suffering so let me know if you want to run into a half-crazed elf creature doing his best.

Sometimes his horrible fever visions will lapse and he'll instead go into venti red. In this case it turns him fully into a wolf but now while close to his lantern. He can't talk to anyone while in wolf form unless they're able to communicate with animals.... The process of turning into a wolf because of the red lantern will resemble the first time he ever transformed which means it's gross (warning: it's gross!). So, sorry to anyone who might witness that.

TL;DR: Crazy elf thing or less crazy wolf. Please don't be afraid of the big bad wolf, he wants to help.

notes: Violence and hallucination-induced self harm could come up outside wolf form a fair bit since he won't always know where he ends and Dark Link begins. Let me know if you want to interact with Link but would rather not deal with those things.

Day won't be affected by the lights for the duration of the game - but his exposure to others who are affected will have consequences on him in the long run - so he'll try to help the others out to the best of his abilities. plans: Will's gonna mostly go down the green track, though it'll have some hints of blue, because while he's fluctuating between grande and venti, he'll lose track of where he is in time and probably get pretty paranoid (again!). Sometimes he'll think he's stuck in the last reset and lash out at those around him, or sometimes he'll think he's trapped in events from his past and retreat from everyone and everything.

Depending on where he's at in terms of level that day, he'll be completely convinced that he's somewhere else or just stuck with the unshakeable feeling of its presence. In the lesser stages he might get a little impulsive as he tries to do things that ground him in the present. He'll be both overwhelmed with guilt for his actions, and caught up in trying to justify them. Since he can't convince himself, he might try to convince you.

tl;dr it's gonna be a bad time!

notes: Will has a permissions post with some general categories of CW, but to be specific there will definitely be murder/violence mentioned, and some of it might get pretty bad. Please let me know if you'd like to avoid certain topics while threading with him, and I'll be happy to leave that stuff out!

plans: Vanitas is going to be effected by this event by proxy. Because he's a Being of Darkness (tm) and the nature of Kingdom Hearts tomfoolery he is actually given strength from siphoning off the negative energy of others. Since this event will result in a lot of that, he'll be leaning into his villain energy. This means that he will be around to provoke your character into leaning into their darker impulses. Is your character paranoid? He'll encourage that they have a reason to be worried. Are they angry? He'll goad them into a fight. Are they seeing things? He'll try to suss out their hallucination, or convince them that it's really happening. Basically if you need someone to exacerbate your characters effects, HMU

For most of the event he'll be at tall red, and looking like his body is literally melting.

Although blue light is basically Vanitas' state of being at all times, he'll get into a venti blue state at some point and attack anything that moves. This option is for anyone that wants to have an all-out Final Fantasy style brawl with a supernatural being. Wanna knock down another building? It's been a while since Vanitas did some property damage...

Plans: Eleven is going to be hit right out of the gate with some Venti Green. She will repeatedly feel, in the beginning of the event, as if she's back in the suspension tank in Hawkin's lab, like she's wearing weights to make her sink, like she's floating, and her senses will regularly fade away, leaving her hearing things muffled as if she were underwater, and making her vision fade and blur similarly.

As this effect progresses, she will slowly but surely begin having more and more difficulties articulating, is if her development is regressing. At the same time, her lantern fades towards Tall Red. There will be a faint but visible webbing of blackened veins around her eyes, cheekbones and forehead. Her pupils dilate to almost entirely blacken her eyes, and her nose won't stop bleeding. And then her hair apparently falls out, regrowing only a little.

Character: Castiel
Plans: Castiel is gonna progress through the shades of red. Over the course of the event, at first, a white-blue light is going to shine through his eyes and also the skin, as if the latter is cracking open to reveal his grace underneath. Additionally, his wings will become, for a while, permanently visible. Appendages like half solidified shadows that eventually become more and more solid and physical as they begin looking like they're bloodied and broken and rotting away.

plans: Molly isn't getting hit with the Red Lantern, but before he realizes how severe it can get, he will probably cajole anyone who suddenly gets a tail and horns and starts bitching about it. And maybe offer to decorate them. He is an expert on horn fashion. He will however be affected by the Blue Light at varying stages, starting out cheerful and carefree and then starting to get increasingly more paranoid about the potential for losing his essential Molly-ness in favor of Lucien right up until he starts getting angry at the idea that he even has to fear Lucien (possibly even dipping into some latent subconscious nastiness- Lucien was a shitty person). Anyone who wants to know some deep cut Molly lore, come on in.
notes: Also willing to play with the green light effects!

plans: Mewtwo will be primarily affected by the Green Light The Great Catsby, which will be awful because it will feel like perhaps it's actively breaking down. This is gonna be some HEAVY disassociation, so enter at your own risk.
