EVENT INFO: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT INFO: THE NIGHT WE MET

the lore part

For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.

By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!

Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:

The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!

See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!

All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!

Even if you're not interested in the forest spirits' holiday, the arrival of the aurora will give you plenty to celebrate on your own. This is the most light Beacon has had since the game opened in July, as the green glow of the aurora is nearly as bright as an overcast day. Bask in the constant near-daylight for those six days, everyone!

...Oh, and it's a memory sharing event!

the memshare part

As the aurora dances over Beacon and forest spirits explode into shooting stars overhead, meteorites will rain down from the aurora. They're not technically meteorites, but you get the picture. They're opals! If a person closes their hand around one of these rocks, they'll experience the memory locked inside...

According to the forest spirits, the aurora is made up of their old friends, friends that have moved on to another stage in their existence and have had to leave them behind. The memories dropped by the aurora will focus on a person or people that each character has left behind by ending up in Beacon. You are free to interpret this stipulation however you like! The person left behind can be a friend or enemy, alive or dead, etc. The idea is that this event will remind characters of those they have left behind in death, in whatever way that most resonates with them.

Opals can look however you like, and they'll be turning up at random all over town! There's no way to determine the "owner" of the opal without peeking at the memory inside, unfortunately, and on top of that, while the aurora is active, the opals are bit tetchier than usual. During the event, touching an opal in any way might trigger the memory sharing. If your character wouldn't ICly partake in memories but you still want them to share stuff/see other people's stuff, there you go! There's your excuse!

When the event ends and the aurora fades, the opals will stick around, and they'll continue to be functional! Feel free to stock up on memory opals to do memory sharing stuff down the road. They're multi-use, and there aren't any drawbacks to using them.

•••

For those of you interested in plot stuff, we'll be doling out random events throughout the week, so sign up below if you'd like a chance to receive one! These random events will include things like forest spirit encounters and happening upon opals belonging to NPCs. There's nothing dangerous about it—we're just doing sign-ups so we know who's interested in having us bug them! These random events will be posted either to characters' inboxes or to their toplevels on the event page. You're welcome to sign up even if you aren't planning to toplevel at the event.

Check out the header below and fill out the form to sign up! We'll be prioritizing new players and players who haven't yet had a shot at neat plot stuff, but everyone is welcome to toss their hat in the ring.

•••

Additionally, players are welcome to use this post for OOC event plotting! In fact, please do, as not everyone in the game has access to each other's plurks! If you'd like, you can use the small form below to kickstart your plotting plans:

the tl;dr

  • February 16-21: The forest spirits send off their pals on dogsled journeys into the aurora! Memory opals rain down throughout Beacon.

  • The town is super bright (by Beacon standards) throughout the event! It's like overcast levels of light.

  • Each memory opal contains a memory belonging to someone in Beacon, and the memory is focused on a person they have left behind by dying.

  • The opals will stick around after the event ends! They can be reused to your heart's content.

player: Psi ([plurk.com profile] PsiYamaneko | PM)
character(s): Link
plans: No real plans but I am down for Link running into people!

The types of memories people may experience from him are:

Midna: A mischievous imp may sometimes be seen riding around on a large, blue-eyed wolf.

Friends: Children and a farm girl wandering around in a forest village with someone who looks like Link but is dressed differently. Link is often playing with the children or riding a horse with the girl.

Ganondorf: A black silhouette against a night sky. Only a flash, but ominous.

Zelda: A brief memory of a beautiful woman in a dark cloak sitting the room of what seems like a castle tower. She wears a royal tiara and has sad, troubled eyes.

Zant: Inside a well lit cavern spring is another ominous figure. He wears a robe with deep sleeves and a cone-shaped helm that obscures his face. A giant, glowing serpent leaps from the water but he shatters it with a single gesture and the world seems to go black. A humanoid figure in blue armor collapses before him and seems to change shape in the darkness.

The Darkness: Churning vortex of darkness sucking up everything around it. In the eye of the vortex is a human-shaped figure clinging to a skeletal hand and screaming, but the features of the individual are hard to make out in all the shadows.

If there are any other kinds of memories you might be interested in, let me know! Want talking animals, brilliant light spirits, a volcano, rock-eating monsters who are pretty chill actually, the sacking of a town, the saving of another?

You can indeed have both though! Or actual brother first and then we'll see if we have time for more? Whichever!

Well obviously Rosi needs to see this cute date after their silly meme conversation from some time back to make it IC and canon now.

player: Ami [plurk.com profile] mizuyoko
character(s): Naminé
plans: I don't have many plans just yet but I'd really like to use this chance for people to see more of Naminé and those of her world. Which consists of Disney and Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, so that's always fun. Her memories are all mixed up so it'll be interesting. She has a lot of memories that will be interesting and relate to some of those in game, I prefer to get permission from people in game before seeing things about them but I am open for anything from up to KH3.
notes: I don't know about notes. Naminé misses everyone she left behind (except those in Beacon who aren't really the same versions of the people who she left behind). A lot of her memories involve her doing semi-horrible things, being kidnapped, threatened, not existing... it's all super weird and a little awkward.

Let me know if you want anything and we'll chat it out! It takes 30 minute to watch all her Chain of Memory cut scenes lol.

Now that I have watched Naminé cut scenes. I have a list of memories people can see!
- Naminé crushing/destroying Replica Riku's Heart.
- Sora choosing to forget her and the castle.
- Naminé meeting Sora as a lingering will.
- Rejoining with Kairi
- Talking to Roxas in Twilight Town? Something with him.
- Xion?
- Diz Locking her in a closet
- Riku when she's pretending to be Kairi/Meeting Riku
- Larxene explaining everything horrible Naminés done...

Namine is adorable but also kind of disastrous in her power set.

COFFEE BEAN CREW

or, you know, daily bugle crew — which could actually also hit that 'modern world' aspect (in a ... sliding timescale kind of way... thanks comics....). i'd totally be down with duster finding a memory related to either of those!

coffee bean would obvs feature mj, gwen and harry; whilst the bugle would feature more jjj and betty brant and co.

depending on which you'd prefer, i can tailor it a little more!

That works too! Or you can wait until the event itself to decide, based on whatever keysmashing I can form into memory paragraphs, there's no need to pick right now haha.

Piggy-backing off of Inky.

You says 'centered around an idea'- are the memories experienced real-time (like, two days worth of memories will take two in-game days to see?) or like a dream, where everything just floods in at once?

This is because Quentin has one central idea (kidding he has several, but one important one is) centered around the idea the Beauty Of All Life. Which-- is fifty years worth of memories. But they are centered around that one idea.

Yes Day, it may be rare but we can have siblings (but everyone's a twin) and we can get robot married.

I have a few memory ideas for the two but a jam session and family dinner will be on there.

Family memories for Stone? Someone who doesn't make Quentin feel old for talking about kids growing up and moving on (and dying *sobs in magician*).

Soldat- man, anything if you're up for it. Quentin really likes him, and his cool robot-arm ways

player: Raven, plurk lives at tadcooper
character(s): Misty
plans: Beyond certainty Soldat and probably Sora will be getting something, hardly any at all. Misty doesn't have anybody she misses and her life...kind of sucks, so having to think about it/revisit it/see other people's memories will have her in a pretty quietly bitter mood. There might be some proactive effort to dig everywhere in the hopes of finding all of hers and like, dumping them in the bonfire, but beyond that just quiet sad seething.

Memories off the top of my head would be something like...

- A lot of middle school fist fights? Pretty much? Tiny brawler.
- Fishing with her dad, one of like three wholesome memories basically.
- Being burned at the stake, that old chestnut. Sort of colors the distance she's keeping from people, hm?
- Killing poachers and resurrecting alligators. Look at those cool resurrection powers she used to have, and also how stone cold ready she is to kill in defense of The Innocent(TM).
- Meeting Zoe and Kyle, by which I mean 'a deeply distressed and nonverbal zombie thrashes and wails in the passenger seat of a car speeding along, while a witch at the wheel panics and cries and apologizes, and Misty, maniac that she is, waits for a pause in conversation that allows her to insert herself before revealing she's just been there for most of this, what do you mean don't jumpscare people DRIVING the CAR
- Madison's resurrection, honestly just for peak.....'wow this is powerful but kinda gross' energy.
- Turning the coven down in favor of heading back to her Isolation Shack
- The first bit of the sacred taking, because I still love 'I don't want to be the Supreme' to tears
- Taking a brick to the head when she's not looking and being buried alive! Fun! Kind of colors the distance she's keeping, hm?
- Tentatively, it'd depend on a given character's reaction, but if you're really looking to get to the heart of something there's the hell stuff + meeting the antichrist
- Also! Stevie Nicks! Almost forgot! Only other happy one(s)! She fains! It's very endearing!
- Brief, but that 'smell a decaying soul since I was a child' line, because I don't know if she's ever yet brought up that she, uh, has a read on your soul! Yes, you!

notes: New cr would be good, either looting her memory or having her pick up something of your muse's. She needs to be forced out there and this is as handy an excuse to rip off a couple of bandaids and force...something as any.

player: Ireth [plurk.com profile] ireth
character:Quentin Coldwater
plans:
I'd like to share more of Quentin's happy memories, just because he's been pouring so much doom and gloom all over the game and the residents so far and happy Quentin is a sight to behold. I have many, many nice memories. About his childhood friend Julia, about his first serious girlfriend Alice. About learning about Magic. Finding the magical kingdom of Fillory. Meeting the author he's been dedicated to for most of his formative years. Meeting Gods and meeting Questing Creatures. His life lived with Eliot (fifty years worth of mostly happy memories -- come and fall in love like Quentin did).

But if anyone wants to go the other way and experience all of the trauma that his canon holds, that is also on the table. Every last one of those good and happy memories have a dark side.

I'm pretty much open to all the things.

Just, warnings - The Magicians regularly deals with death, drugs, forced marriage, slavery, depression, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, drinking, possession, murder, bank heists and a shit-ton of magic going wrong.

notes: Quentin has an Opt-out post! Use it if you need to.
