EVENT INFO: A MONSTER'S HERE


the basics

The remaining survivors of Beacon have everything they need to explore the mines, the last known location of a mysterious apocalyptic group known as the Wild Hunt. Though the Hunt weren't exactly friends of most in town, they did save the lives of the people who had been held hostage by green-eyed spirits at the hospital. They have not been heard from since the flood, and so those who wish to know more about the group and their goals, those who want to understand their fate or harbor any gratitude toward the now-missing may wish to go and see for themselves and search for any survivors.

Can any of the Wild Hunt be found? What resources might they have held in those tunnels into the mountains? While seeking the answers, you might find your deepest fears exposed to everyone around you - and discover new fears you'll all have to face together.


the details

Starting on October 19th, characters will begin traveling toward the mines with their handcart packed with rations and tools. It will take a day and change to arrive, so expect a camp out in the cold mountain foothills along the overgrown tracks. While nothing much will happen, characters will be able to take turns keeping watch and resting up... Though it won't be particularly restful. Nightmares based in their personal deepest fears will plague anyone who manages to sleep, and those dreams will feel eerily real when they wake.

By October 20, characters will continue on and make it to the mines proper, and figure out a way inside. Unfortunately, the way in won't be an easy way out, and the characters will be trapped for the duration of the event by a means that will be revealed on the event post itself. Those trapped inside will be able to complete a mini-explore of the mines OR experience a mod-tailored spirit experience based on character fears that could give insights on what happened in the mines. To allow for prompt mod responses, characters can pick either route, but not both.

During their imprisonment, characters will also be exposed to the dangers of rabid and violent spirits. These spirits are feral and out of control, and characters will need to protect themselves or find a way to pacify these spirits. Character action in relation to these spirits will decide the result of the event. In addition, this spirits will have Green-Eye like hallucinatory abilities that can tap into minds of characters and force fears into the open, allowing for a fear share where deepest fears become reality.

The fear share will work as follows:

  • Describe your character's deepest fear(s) on this post or write them elsewhere and link them here and/or on the event log, whichever works for you! These can be broad general topics (such as a fear of heights, or abandonment) or could be far more detailed, we'll leave that up to you and what you feel suits your character best.

  • The forest spirits with these abilities can project those fears into the minds of anyone they come across, whether inside or outside the mines. It's up to you whose fears your characters experience and how many.

  • Some spirits might project entire completed scenes that begin, sweep your character in fully and make them believe they're experiencing them, then end abruptly - sort of like the graves on the TDM, or the memories in the aurora's opals from last winter.

  • Some spirits instead might project the fears into the lives of your characters, surrounding them in hallucinations as they go about their daily business for minutes, hours, or even days - so if character A is afraid of clowns, character B might see Pennywise around every corner, and might see The Invincible as a big top interior, for example.

  • Again, those are up to you! Whichever you think would be the most interesting or fun to thread out. Feel free to mix and match. Whichever you go with, the fears will feel extremely real throughout the course of the event, such that characters will have a very hard time distinguishing hallucination from reality. However, the things they see can not be seen by others no matter how real they feel.


Characters will be able to escape the mines ICly on October 23, and the result of the event will be released at this time.

To get an idea of player involvement and numbers, we request you opt in if your character will be trapped in the mines. If your character stays above ground, have no fear (or do): the fear share and vivid nightmares will persist all over Beacon, allowing all characters to get in on the "fun" no matter where they are located.

the tl;dr

  • October 19: Journey to the mine entrance begins

  • October 20: Characters enter and become trapped in the mine, and must work to survive and find a way out as they explore what happened there. Fear share begins.

  • October 23: Event ends. Characters escape. Results of the event will be released.

plans: Rosinante's greatest fear is being discovered to have been born in Mariejois as a Celestial Dragon, and the fallout that comes from that. Where he comes from, these people are the ruling class, consider themselves to be literal gods, and are accustomed to having anything they want, so greed, hedonism, and narcissism run rampant and they're guilty of torture, abduction and slavery, casual murder, and pretty much everything awful you can imagine that someone might indulge in when they have infinite money and power and there are zero consequences to their actions. Because of their physical separation from the bulk of the world's population, as well as the military's dedication to protecting and serving them, those who despise them are generally powerless to actually do anything about it. A lone, unprotected Celestial Dragon in the world of the common people might find himself in a pretty dire situation very quickly should they wish to take revenge, which Rosinante discovered firsthand as a child.

Anyway, here are some ways his fear could be experienced by others:

  • Deep self-consciousness that everyone who sees you is staring, because they know exactly who you are and what you've done and they hate you for it; that your friends might decide to hurt you, betray you, and/or abandon you now that they know

  • The feeling that you're being hunted, and your very survival depends on not being found, coupled with hallucinations of people (strangers, or friends) with weapons chasing and attacking you, leaving phantom injuries

  • Seeing the above happen to a clumsy, scrawny blond child in ragged clothing, who you might find hiding in your closet and who refuses to speak

  • Those actually near him might at times see him in this deeply cursed outfit complete with a clear spherical helmet over his head, regardless of what he's actually wearing

And if you have other ideas on how this fear might be represented/hallucinated/shared with your character, I'm happy to accomodate! He's been holding onto this his whole life, so it's time it gets out finally.
notes: Rosi will be joining the expedition to the mines but you all better believe the above stuff can be seen by anyone, except the last one I suppose which is limited only to other people on the trip.

plans: Okay let's talk about fears, here... looks like I don't necessarily have to pick, which is great :D

First fear is of handlers. Zola or Pierce would figure prominently, but there were others, including a high-ranking doctor who looked like Misty once. Second fear is of the Asset hurting people, so, you know, of himself and what he knows he's capable of if he doesn't remember people. Third fear is of not remembering, of starting new and empty again, symbolized by the Chair and its halo. Fourth fear would be being grabbed and immobilized, held still and confined.

For actual plot purposes, he's going to TRY to communicate with the spirits as best as he can. He's not stupid, he won't let himself or people with him be hurt, but he'll be doing a lot of singing during this event and trying not to hurt the spirits too bad if he has to incapacitate them.

plans: the only thing javert is legitimately afraid of is uncertainty. moral ambiguous situations terrify him, as does anything that would force him to have to think and make a difficult decision. he's also afraid of his own feelings to a lesser extent, or anything that would remind him that he's a fallible human.

these fears would manifest in the form of a sudden, crippling feeling of indecision, for things that were never difficult for a character to decide before. there may also be visions of a man dressed in a convict's garb, with a halo above his head and standing above the ruin of society. characters may also lose their sense of direction or sight and not know where to go. feeling emotions such as love and friendship would also strike fear in their heart inexplicably.

notes: Fears for her:

  • Loss of free will - Reiju is programmed to obey her father, and can be forced to do anything he commands, even if it means turning on others. Which, if the spirits can counterfeit him well enough, they can probably play on...

  • Drowning - She's drowned once already, and nearly drowned a second time down on Helix Station. She's immobilized and helpless in water, and terrified of finding herself in that position again.

  • Sickness - Reiju is an enhanced human and doesn't get sick, but he watched her mother die after years of being bedridden, and the thought of being in that position, or having people she cares about in that position, horrifies her.

plans: I have few plans, but I do have some fears.

1. The mines in general sound terrible to her. Being under the stone is just a horror story for her. Stone, on her world, is only found at the bottom of the ocean, and that is the place of the dead.

2. Merwen is afraid of soldiers. Yes, really. Sorry, Soldat. Particularly she gets spooked when the soldierhood starts overwhelming their humanity.

3. A flashback of being imprisoned in a metal-walled cell on an army base, being occasionally tormented by soldiers, which was an extremely traumatic experience which she really has not overcome, not remotely, is the natural culmination of this.

4. Possibly she might hallucinate other people as being General Realgar, who is the man who imprisoned her and also the man who led the invasion/occupation/genocide of her world.

5. As a bonus, harm coming to her family. Maybe just familiar voices calling for help.

plans: Kuai is staying behind to defend Beacon from any potential spirit invasions. He'll spend most of the time worriedly pacing but when asked gruffly explain that he is patrolling and he is most definitely not fretting.
Fears:
He's got two: being helpless to protect people, and losing control.

How that can manifest:
1. Characters being unable to control their body but still being aware. If they were walking they keep walking but suddenly can't will themselves to stop or turn their heads or do literally anything as if someone else is controlling them.
2. Watching anyone be killed while being restrained in some way
3. Flashback to an entire city covered in ice, thousands of dead each in their own little icicle and Kuai floating holding a dagger, his eyes glowing and unseeing. (This will be a fun flashback for Kuai because he was actually unconscious when this happened and doesn't remember what his possessed body did.)
4. Feel free to see Revenant Kuai stalking about.

  • white patches suddenly appearing all over your skin, or the skin of others; feeling sick, exhausted, nauseous, feverish, in pain. if these appear on you, you may hallucinate voices calling you a monster who should be killed, or see people looking at you horrified and afraid, telling you not to come closer before you infect them too.

  • you may suddenly see your surroundings change, hear gunfire, people screaming, running, dying, buildings burning, people pleading to be let out. alternately, you feel an intense need to find people important to you, only to find them murdered, lying on the ground.

  • hearing laughter that keeps on echoing around you and knowing that you've utterly failed, and the despair that comes with the knowledge.

plans: hey hi I'm here to lay this out months after the fact lmao
notes: Will's fear-sharing is mostly centered around three incidents: that one time he got stranded on a shitty planet colony with no supplies and had to (or did he) murder everyone to survive, that time he got stabbed to death in space, and the last reset. these will manifest in the following ways:

  • intense paranoia, mostly of other people; being convinced that everyone is actively attempting to murder you
  • the feeling of being stalked, which may or may not come with hallucinations of the halls of a space station, as well as phantom stabbing
  • an overwhelming smell, part chemical and part organic, that anyone familiar might recognize as the scent of decomposition crossed with some kind of cleaning agent
  • the powerful urge to hide, to make yourself as small as possible and make no sound, which may come along with either the sounds of heavy boots on metal or the sounds of something crashing through the underbrush
  • a haunting, alien sound, somewhere between music, sirens, and whale noises— this sound is deafening
  • sudden panic attacks, triggered either by the real or hallucinatory sound of howling wind, or basically any of the above things. these panic attacks involve not being able to breathe, racing heartbeat, and being unable to tolerate the touch of other people (or even their proximity) as chief symptoms.
