the basics

It's been a rough week, to say the least.

First you woke up dead in a land of perpetual darkness, and now it looks like you're stuck here until you fulfill a mysterious goal— or the lighthouse keeper resets the town. Maybe you've come to terms with your death and maybe you haven't, but it's a difficult task; you're basically grieving for yourself. And you know what they say makes grief easier? A tangible place to do it.

During the "night", or at least when the most people are sleeping, a curious thing happens in the Bonfire Square. Dozens of shrines, altars, and other memorials appear seemingly out of nowhere, lined up in rows like a haphazard cemetery. Each one is covered in candles, and each bears an image or a name (or in some cases, both,) of a current resident of the town. The air around these monuments is solemn and reverent, and it instills in visitors an urge to pay respects.

Doing so, however, may have surprising results.

the details

The shrines appear on July 12th. Each one is unique, and can look however a player wishes to correspond to their character. It can be an actual grave site, a pagan altar, a household shrine, a roadside shrine— anything you like, so long as it's some form of memorial for the dead. (Yes, the NPCs get them too.)

Characters who visit the makeshift cemetery will feel the need to make offerings of some kind at the shrines of others. These offerings can be just about anything a character wants to place, but doing so will cause them to experience the death of the character whose shrine they're offering at. These brief (we hope) hallucinations include visual information as well as feeling and thought. You'll get to learn exactly what happened to your friends (or enemies), but you'll have to decide if the pain is worth it.

After making your offering(s), you may want to check in on the people whose deaths you saw. Maybe now you can comfort someone in a way you couldn't before, maybe now you understand them better. Or maybe you just want to taunt them. Up to you. It's also entirely possible that you don't want anyone to know how you died. But do you really want to guard your own grave for a week?

After July 19th, the shrines will vanish, just as mysteriously as they appeared. When they do, characters will receive all offerings placed at their shrines, in the form of a package at the post office.

So what happens if someone destroys their own shrine? Or makes a concerted effort to, at least.

Is there a size limit on the shrines? Ie. could it be something as big as a tomb with a life-sized statue and accompanying direwolf?

apologies if i missed this BUT is there a grace period between making the offering and then experiencing the death? or is it immediate? basically, i just want to know if someone can make multiple offerings at once and then get bombarded by all of the deaths at the same time. i'm horrible i know

What does "experience" the death entail? Is it a full immersive, feeling what the dead-to-be's feeling, or is it just a fly on the wall type deal?

Can shrines of two characters overlap or be super close? For the accidental paying of respects to a character by mistake. Also, what kind of offerings can there be? They don’t have much so is it stuff laying around that they find?

If a character has died twice, will offerings show one or the other, only the most recent death, or can we be mean and hammer someone with both?

It was intended to be immediate, meaning Prompto would have to chuck a bunch of items simultaneously and hope they all land. I kid, we're not that mean. If it's more fun for you for there to be a delay, then go for it!

It's entirely up to you! You can give people a choice on which they want their character to see, or you can make them suffer through the whole series. Fun!

Can the name on the shrine be different from the name the character is currently using? Like we can pick whether it's their birth name vs what they call themselves now, or is it strictly one or the other?

I don't see why not! Go for it.

They could potentially be very close, yeah! Just make sure the other character's player is alright with it.

As for the kind of offerings, they can use things they find, things they brought with them, things they think the other character might like, basically anything! Grab some food from the store or pick up a random leaf. Up to you!

Can the name on the grave be the person's real name even if they don't know/realize that's them?

Essentially: Can Pikachu's grave say 'Harry Goodman'

If a shrine is destroyed, either by the character it's for or someone else, it will reappear the following day (assuming it's not the 19th) in the same place.

And also a duplicate will appear somewhere else in town. Shrine hydra.

Is it just the death itself or some of the events leading up to it?

For example, would Bri's be just the hanging or could the "trial" be included?

Sure thing! It can say whichever name you want, regardless of character knowledge.

You can include the events leading up if you wish! In some cases it might help to establish context, or it might just make things more horrifying and that's A-OK with us!

And how strong is this impulse to leave offerings? Can it be resisted or is it like, TOUGH SHIT SNOOKUMS NOW SUFFER?

If a character wishes to give themselves an offering and relive their own death, they are welcome to do so.

As for resisting the urges, that's up to the player. If you think your character wouldn't leave offerings unless forced, you can say event shenanigans made them. If you'd like to opt out, you can say they were able to resist.
