the basics

It's been a rough week, to say the least.

First you woke up dead in a land of perpetual darkness, and now it looks like you're stuck here until you fulfill a mysterious goal— or the lighthouse keeper resets the town. Maybe you've come to terms with your death and maybe you haven't, but it's a difficult task; you're basically grieving for yourself. And you know what they say makes grief easier? A tangible place to do it.

During the "night", or at least when the most people are sleeping, a curious thing happens in the Bonfire Square. Dozens of shrines, altars, and other memorials appear seemingly out of nowhere, lined up in rows like a haphazard cemetery. Each one is covered in candles, and each bears an image or a name (or in some cases, both,) of a current resident of the town. The air around these monuments is solemn and reverent, and it instills in visitors an urge to pay respects.

Doing so, however, may have surprising results.

the details

The shrines appear on July 12th. Each one is unique, and can look however a player wishes to correspond to their character. It can be an actual grave site, a pagan altar, a household shrine, a roadside shrine— anything you like, so long as it's some form of memorial for the dead. (Yes, the NPCs get them too.)

Characters who visit the makeshift cemetery will feel the need to make offerings of some kind at the shrines of others. These offerings can be just about anything a character wants to place, but doing so will cause them to experience the death of the character whose shrine they're offering at. These brief (we hope) hallucinations include visual information as well as feeling and thought. You'll get to learn exactly what happened to your friends (or enemies), but you'll have to decide if the pain is worth it.

After making your offering(s), you may want to check in on the people whose deaths you saw. Maybe now you can comfort someone in a way you couldn't before, maybe now you understand them better. Or maybe you just want to taunt them. Up to you. It's also entirely possible that you don't want anyone to know how you died. But do you really want to guard your own grave for a week?

After July 19th, the shrines will vanish, just as mysteriously as they appeared. When they do, characters will receive all offerings placed at their shrines, in the form of a package at the post office.

Gene's probably only going to do one grave before he realizes that the compulsion is resulting in Nonconsensual Death Knowledge and he'll be Very Not Cool with that! So he'll probably hightail it out of there post-haste afterwards. :' ) The One Grave he leaves an offering on is probably going to be someone from his existing pool of CR but I might just... draw it out of a hat, we'll see. Unless anyone has strong feelings about it one way or another??

Gene's death is available for anyone to see it. It was pretty mundane, the circumstances leading up to it involve him getting that battlefield call of 'MEDIC' and him getting up out of a foxhole just outside of St Vith during the Battle of the Bulge to go help out a squadmate. While he's tending to him he gets shot in the carotid artery. Pretty much instantaneous unconsciousness and death, whoops. The most notable thing would be the cold leading up to it (below zero!!) and the fact that it was snowing, and Gene's general state of mind would be exhaustion/determination. ALSO: for anyone who wants in on Gene's ability to see ghosts down the line, there's also the bonus option to see his ghost!BFF in the ~hallucination. I'd prefer to limit this to a few people from his existing CR and maybe (if anyone's interested) a couple I can build new CR from? Gene is not forthcoming about the ghost stuff at all so it's like. A Lot.

OKAY I'LL BREAK THIS IN, GATHER ROUND FRIENDS!! ROY BEAT ME okay anyway.

Three important things for Wash!

1. The name on the grave is gonna be his birth name, so not "Washington" and there's not going to be a picture, meaning you'll have to figure out whose death you're seeing from context clues! (Either if your character saw him in his armor the first day or...)

2. Wash and Kyna (his girlfriend, although only Nate knows that ICly right now) were killed by genocidal alien robots only seconds apart, and we just determined that he saw her get hit first but didn't make it to her in time. So that'll be SUPER FUN for folks to experience.

3. He's definitely going to try to destroy his headstone once he realizes what's happening, and when it pops back he's gonna fucking camp out on it to try and keep people from offering things. GO AWAY. But if you aren't into that as of the second day there'll be two and he can't be in two places at once, so you don't have to thread with him directly!

- Scarlett's tombstone will simply read VAN HELSING. It's not a name she will have told people, but notably, her network name is @ helsing. Yes, you are welcome to make the fourth wall connection to 'that Van Helsing' I'm sure that won't irritate her endlessly (tho let's be real if you do make the connection it will explain a lot about Scarlett to you).
- Scarlett chose to take her own life (by driving a knife into her chest) in order to stop an Elder vampire from being unleashed on the world and she was the key to setting him free. This fun little scene will come with a side of vampires and parental death to boot.
- She will very much act like none of this bothers her. If people want to talk to her about what they experience it's likely to be handled in terms of facts. She will, however, answer questions, just don't you know... expect her to share feelings and she'll likely be very dismissive of sympathy because how does one emotions?

Anyway! I'm going to do a write up on her death because it's not something I can pull out a vid for. You're welcome to have had your character make an offering but never actually speak to her about it. I'm down for any and all shenanigans.

Death: Wanda dies in canon at the end of her canon pull-point, the end of Avengers: Infinity War. She nearly defeats Thanos by sacrificing (killing) the Vision whom she cherishes to destroy the Mind Stone, demolishing that stone while still in his head, but is outsmarted by him when he uses the Time Stone to reverse the last minute of events. He steals the Mind Stone from Vision's head himself, instantly killing him again while leaving his cold vibranium android body behind. This time, however, Thanos possesses all of the Infinity Stones to carry out his plans. He snaps his fingers — and half of the universe's living souls are decimated. Wanda is one of them. In her harrowing grief, we watch her slowly evaporate into nothing more than dust.

Her alter will be a simple wooden table, round and uncovered with an hourglass full of pale red dust and sand sitting among the aforementioned candles. The sand apparently doesn't move (defying the laws of physics) unless you put down an offering. Right in front of the hourglass is a wooden plaque with her name on it, Wanda Maximoff.

Once she realizes what's going on — she'll catch on quickly, with people stopping in front of other shrines and briefly going catatonic or feeling pain as they experience death scenes, receiving telepathic waves of distress — she'll try to destroy her altar as swiftly as she can because OH NO that is a VERY PERSONAL AND EXQUISITELY PAINFUL DEATH as well as a FULL ON FAILURE TO SAVE THE UNIVERSE. But per the questions asked, it just keeps reappearing, and the continued use of her powers tires her — her exhaustion will just lead her to feel more vulnerable to the compulsion to leave offerings for others.

As for whose shrines she visits, and who visits hers, I'm really flexible! I am kind of all about building CR off of pure shared horror, whether it's the kind of CR where it's like wow I totally feel you let's hold hands or wow I can't believe you just saw that stay away from me I have forgotten how to look you in the eye... at first... then bond later..... because #traumaaaaaa

bill will be visiting his own grave. morbid, but he is still trying to come to terms with his death and it seems like the thing to do. he won't be going out of his way to visit other people's graves initially, so the first time will be completely accidental. i don't know whose it's gonna be, so i'll either leave it vague or i'll just randomly choose someone.

once he figures out he can get deets on someone's death via offering (#twigs4all), then he may or may not look into a few parties of interest. i don't think he cares enough to make the rounds or even guard over his own grave, so if anyone wants to experience his death, they are welcome to it. he was shot twice in the chest by his former best friend/bro-in-arm in a church that he'd managed to crawl to after being wounded and tossed into a dumpster. (it's a long story.) iii haven't decided HOW MUCH of his death somebody will get to experience when they give him an offering, but i'll have it worked out by the time i tlevel him for the event. it's prob not a good idea to approach him about it though iajs.

Gettin back in the saddle here with this event, just throwing it out there that he was killed by a mountain-sized eight-headed snake monster so that could be fun if you wanna see it. No need to pre-plot but putting it out there that it'll be in his toplevel or whatever form tags take. Moreover, piggybacking on the question of size of graves, look, he's a mfing emperor from 3rd century China he gets a tomb ok. Feel free to hate him for its opulence but at least no builders got sealed inside or anything.

Also of relevance to any character from or familiar with Japanese history, any visions of his last moments will feature one Ishida Mitsunari, failed leader of the Western Army, so that might be a bit of wtf to play with. If it comes up. Y'know.

(This comes with spoilers for American Gods. I have no idea if the show will follow the exact same events as the book, but here's your warning. As a reminder, you can opt-out of spoilers here.)

Shadow's memorial will be a Norse-looking thing with a rather conspicuous absence of a first name (it'll literally be a big blank spot), though it will display the rest of his name and possibly a picture. There will be 3 options for experiencing Shadow's death.

OPTION 1: Congratulations! You'll be tied to a tree and hang there for nine days, completely naked, until you die from exposure. Enjoy the hallucinations, mania, visits from a few gods, and a last moment with your undead, visibly rotting wife!

OPTION 2: Welcome to the world between life and death! Here, you'll get to meet some neat Egyptian gods. You'll also get to endure the agony of having your entire life's worth of flaws, failings, weaknesses, and sins dragged out and examined. Hope you enjoy being reduced to a sobbing child! Later, you'll get to choose where you want to go — and you'll choose not heaven, not hell, but nothing, because you just want it to end.

OPTION 3: Ohhhh, lucky you! You get a combination of both 1 & 2! Have fun! :)

Shadow won't be trying to destroy his memorial, but he may wind up sitting by it to be like 'heyyyyy don't do it brah' if people are trying to leave offerings. He'll be willing to just tell the overly curious how he died, bc srsly why would you want to experience it. 8( That said, it'll totally be possible to get by him.

five will probably be visiting some peoples' graves, partially accidentally, partially because of the compulsion, and partially because he's a nosy bastard lmfao. i'm pretty open here to seeing how it goes!

he won't actually be guarding his own grave or anything, but he will pop up periodically like the world's smollest jump scare to scowl disapprovingly at people who pry and see his memories. five died by blood loss after trying to walk off a serious injury because THE FATE OF THE WORLD (+ his siblings) was more important to him, which is something he'd probably own once people have seen the memory. itt: five is surprisingly self-sacrificing and soft, please roast him about it forever.

incidentally there's a good chance of him telling people how old he really is this event, because he won't want people like....feeling bad that he died so young....so if that's a thing you'd be interested in lmk and we might be able to work that out! oh and his gravestone will literally say number five because....yep.

ok, so the short version is: before her entry into the game, carol died from absorbing the energy from a bunch of cosmic missiles, and they basically tore her apart. so that's.... fun.

long version: for a really longass time in the marvel universe, both in the comics and the movies (and in this case we're talking specifically about the movies), two alien races known as the kree and the skrulls have been at war. over the course her self-titled movie, carol learns that the kree are a collective giant bag of dicks and have blaming the skrulls for a bunch of different atrocities, among other things, when the skrulls, refugees of war, are actually just trying to find a home.

so, at the time of her death, carol is helping the skrulls to find a new place they can call home. she thinks they've managed to find it — on a remote world at the edge of our galaxy. this, however, doesn't last; the accusers, a kree military force, have tracked them to this world, and begin to bomb it with missiles. carol manages to buy the skrulls enough time to board their ship and escape by taking the force of the blasts herself, but eventually she absorbs all the energy she can, and when she's hit this limit, she's literally torn apart. super painfully. atom by atom.

what you'll feel, in addition to this intense pain, will be equal parts fear and relief as you experience your final moments.

the shrine isn't terribly elaborate, just a basic gravestone labeled "carol susan jane danvers". nothing too special, except note the two middle names.

other fun facts are that carol will definitely repeatedly be trying to blow up her shrine, because she's very much in a "fuck this place" mindset, so.... a lot of them are going to appear. all over beacon. probably one every 10-15 feet by the time she's done. SO!! there are going to be a lot of opportunities for y'all to run into one of them. please feel free to come forth and do so C:

oh, also to add: carol will also be poking around to see if this happened to other people, too, so she can definitely see others' deaths as well!

as for her own grave, a simple thing that is engraved with AX400 #579 102 694 instead of her name will show the events leading up to her rather physically painless death but emotionally it's a goddamn mess since she loses luther (her companion and family) along with alice (her daughter) dying in her arms shortly before she decides to "give up" and die on the banks of canada after having reached freedom. anyone will also experience general android fun times as several of her components had begun failing in the time leading up to her own death. they'll also probably realize very quickly that kara's memories only span over a period of about six days. weird, huh.

otherwise, she'll be in town quietly not coping at all. feel free to find her mending clothes or perhaps cooking out of frustration.

Kyna's death was pretty brutal! She was killed by a shapeshifting alien robot that was resistant to her magic (surprise!), and Wash was with her, so two for the price of one? Sort of.

I'm not picky about who sees Kyna's death! She's mostly been pretending it didn't happen, though, so her reactions to people bringing it up to her will probably vary between anger and shutting down on them, which could be fun! She won't be guarding her grave even when she realizes what's going on. She learned in her last game that fighting this sort of thing doesn't work, so she'll just be pretending this isn't happening, either. Great coping skills.

Yes, Hope is only 17. Yes, she's going to have two death options. Her life is terrible.

OPTION ONE: A 15-year-old Hope is living with the power of an ancient, horrible witch inside of her called The Hollow. It whispers to her, drives her crazy, is only placated with horrific violence, and is slowly killing her as she nears her first full moon after triggering her werewolf curse. She collapses, her heart stops, and she sees her recently passed mother on the other side. Video here.

OPTION TWO: Hope fights a dragon single-handedly because she's the only one there that has a chance in hell of fighting back. The rest of the people, including her headmaster, take shelter under ground. She proceeds to use a death spell on the dragon as it's flying at her, and the magic rebounds, killing both of them in the process. Video here with her not waking up at the end.

OPTION THREE: Both? Mix them together? Whatever floats your boat.

I'm down with anyone seeing either of these options and talking to her about it. She holds a lot in and is ignoring the ramifications of her death pretty fervently. She's also going to try to destroy her headstone at least once, probably in spectacular magical fashion, if anyone wants to witness that. It will be fairly simple, an urn filled with ashes that has her name on it, along with the appropriate dates, as werewolves (including her mom) are often given what are basically viking funerals.

So Angor's grave is honestly just going to be a pile of rocks? Because trolls. So it's not really a tombstone per say and probably easy to miss, but there will be a larger rock there with some weird troll language on it and his name translated too.

As for his death he basically just gets stabbed through with a sword and turns into stone. Nothing fancy so if anyone wants to experience it go for it?!

As for him, well, I mean he's come to terms with his own death for a second time. He's oddly at peace about it too so he won't be too emotional or anything. He might wander around to other people's graves though and leave a few offerings, even with the knowledge of learning of how others died.

Rosinante Donquixote | One Piece

Rosinante will absolutely be visiting others' graves early on, because he wants to know more about the people he's stuck with and will quickly take this as a way to learn. He'll probably prioritize a few people he's already interacted with but if you want him to be drawn to yours in particular, please let me know - especially if we don't have existing CR yet!

He'll periodically swing by his own to see who might be there and probably will try to dissuade people in general but he's not going to just camp out and chase people off, that's way too much to do on top of checking out other graves. He'll be pretty annoyed his surname is on the marker, but he's already told a few people and it's not some big secret here where none of the people in this world have existing associations with it.

The grave marker is a simple white cross with a stone plaque at its base. On the plaque is the following:

Anyone giving offerings to the grave will get to experience the delight of lighting one last cigarette despite multiple broken ribs as he leans against a treasure chest and points a gun at his own brother, who accuses him of betrayal and shoots him multiple times before leaving him to bleed out in the snow. I'll do a writeup in text on the post but if anyone prefers to just watch a video it's all right here.

nathan drake / uncharted

Nate is incapable of not being nosy, so after leaving something for someone the first time he might make a point of quietly seeking out specific graves belonging to people he's met thus far. He isn't so invasive as to explore a stranger's grave, but he'll most likely leave offerings in the form of little drawings on slips of paper torn from his sketchbook.

His own grave is a tall Celtic cross with intricate knot-work, and the plinth of the headstone will read:

Nate's death includes the moments leading up to Rafe Adler leveling a gun and shooting at him, before Nate's older brother steps in to take the hit on his behalf. This action knocks Nate back over a cliff, where he cracks his head on a rock before hitting the water. The primary emotion is the deep, agonizing betrayal of a trusted loved one having been revealed as a liar, with the fleeting willingness to take a bullet.

He'll be around town, probably sketching people's headstones if they're of particular interest, and will most likely talk to anyone who addresses him.

okay SO!! raylan will be giving the graves a wide berth once he finds his own is among them, but up until that point, he will probably be prowling around some. i don't think he'd leave offerings of his own free will but he would probably easily be compelled especially with people he's already met! the offerings will PROBABLY be alcohol because. it's all he can think of

his grave is actually something he's super familiar with since it was outside his childhood home when he was growing up, looking like this! which is really fun and not horrible at all, thanks dad! his grave right now will have his death date (2011) on it, obviously. if there are any eagle eyes about, they might be able to notice that all of the inscription is quite weathered except for the 2011 which looks very fresh, almost as if...everything except '2011' has been on that grave for like 30 whole years..........🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

raylan's death is a little complicated (if you know justified, i AU'd him from the end of season 2 after the shootout with the bennetts). i'll do a proper writeup in the post but BASICALLY tl;dr raylan got shot, still managed to save the day, and then died. emotions include: anger, regret, some small satisfaction, and a weirdly depressing amount of acceptance. optional soundtrack for the sheer irony of it and also just because this song bops

Ignis Scientia - FFXV

Warning in advance- what happens to Ignis is... pretty terrible. So, if you're 100% sure you want to see man burn inside-out and scream in agony but fights anyway, please proceed.

His altar is very simple. It doesn't have his picture, but it has his name carved in, in very neat handwriting. Below it there's a carving of his crossed daggers. That's the simple, "innocent-looking" part of it all.

Those that leave offerings will see events that lead up to his death. There will be broken pieces of his memory- bridge blowing up, fight against Ravus, Noctis knocked out, Oracle's death and, of course, followed by the action that caused his own- using Ring of Lucii against Ardyn who threatens to stab Noctis in the neck. The Ring finds him worthy but the pain is incredible (the Kings are NOT nice to those who aren't Royal) and if you don't want your character to suffer watch out~

He won't come close near his own altar, but once he finds out what it does (he'll leave some offerings around himself), he'll try to persuade people and turn them away.

Arya Stark | Game of Thrones & A Song of Ice and Fire

WEll damn if this isn't the perfect event for Arya.

She will be utterly fascinated after the first time she's compelled to leave an offering and experiences someone else's death (whom she knows!!), and will immediately start seeking out as many of them as she can. She'll probably start with the cr she has so far in game because she's a snoop, but Arya has been a student of death her entire life, and this is the most informative lesson she could ask for, so please let me know if you want something specific from/to come from Arya invading your character's deathprivacy, and if you want to start some new cr that way! (Also let me know if you would prefer that Arya not see your character's death for any reason!)

The only 'grave' she will stay away from completely is Jon's unless Rachel thinks something fun could come from it being the first one Arya leaves something at, not knowing it's the last death she'd want to experience. So let me know about that!

Arya's 'grave' itself will be a Stark tomb: a big stone tomb with a life-size statue of herself and a stone direwolf curled around her feet. Because she was lost at sea, her tomb is hauntingly and appropriately empty. Look, the nobility of Westeros is a bit Extra, and the Starks love their morbid reminders of mortality. Big Tombstone Energy.

Arya's death (I'm considering doing a write-up, if anyone thinks this would benefit what they'd like to plot with her) was prolonged and torturous and will be a horrible experience (both mentally and physically) for anyone that opts into it. She died becalmed at sea of thirst, desperate and despairing and knowing that it was her own hubris that got herself and her crew killed for daring an exploration they had no real business attempting. At the very end, she was delusional and thought back on her murders and the dead members of her family that she was avenging when she committed them, so some of Arya's past could also be revealed through this experience.

Let's plot!

if you ever wanted to know whether javert has a heart or not, now's your chance. i won't go into all the details of his suicide since it's very tl;dr but the basic gist of it is: he was saved by his nemesis jean valjean, he realized that his treatment of criminals was immoral,
he left a "suicide note" at the police station outlining ways for the police force to work more effectively and treat prisoners better, then he went to the pont au change and jumped into the dark waters of the seine.

he won't be guarding his grave but he will definitely be taking frequent trips out to the cemetary. if he sees someone at his grave, the worst he will do is yell at them and tell them never to speak about what they saw.

he'll also be prowling around checking out other people's graves and leaving coins as offering. he's really, really bad at comforting people so the aftermath might be extremely awkward but that could be fun. javert himself is also really bad at being comforted because he's not used to people being nice to him so. i'm up for pretty much anything!

Elden | Original

Elden will be visiting the tombs and be giving into the sense of leaving offerings. As someone in training to be a priest at his church, he's going to give the most proper respect he can. Graves will be left with unlit candles (because sadly you can't light things here), small jars of clear water from his magic, and a small drawing of a sun like on his armour.

Elden's grave will look like this except the cross is replaced with another golden sun and the statuette is that of woman wreathed in golden fire. On the tombstone it'll read

I'll go into more detail in his post, but Elden's death is him finishing his speech to the nobles of Fellengar asking them to stand with the Inquisition and to turn against the Vizier and his undead masses. Primarily the emotion of the scene is him trying to offer redemption and forgiveness to those who were apart of the undead cult when it all turns to shock, fear and despair. Despair at dying young and fear at not being around to keep his friends. The strongest one will be the fact of loss and how he has a hard time of letting things go or people and dreads that one thing.

Sup. He's most definitely going to visit Kuai's grave and then Hanzo's after he finds out that you experience their deaths. Otherwise he'll be around haunting the area.

His grave marker will read Bi-Han, not that Noob really gives his name away. Also there are two deaths to choose from if anyone wishes to visit it:

His first as a human (Sub-Zero). He gets burned alive by Scorpion/Hanzo Hasashi and then his spine is ripped out though he was most likely dead by that point.

second death is when Nightwolf knocks him into the soulnado and he kind of gets blown up and ripped apart by a bunch of angry souls. Because that's what a soulnado is. Evil angry souls as a giant green tornado. Why? Ask Shang Tsung.

Coraline will probably only manage to leave offerings for One person before she gets freaked out and realizes that means other people can see how she died. She'll first try to destroy her grave in secret, but when it comes back (and unknowingly duplicates), she'll be standing guard until it disappears. So basically you don't necessarily havec to interact with her to get her memories.

Her grave will be a simple headstone carved from some unknown black rock that seems to absorb light. Other than that, it's pretty normal. Etched on it is:

Her death basically involved cultists jumping her on her way home, her putting up a fight, getting her powers sealed, and chained up on an alter in a random ass warehouse. There, they basically do the requisite superhero rant about how she was supposed to bring with her an apotheosis of darkness, blah blah blah, we're gonna kill you and release the thing that's clearly in you so the thing can still happen. Then she gets stabbed in the heart and dies. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
