EVENT INFO: GRAVES

EVENT INFO: GRAVES

the basics

It's been a rough week, to say the least.

First you woke up dead in a land of perpetual darkness, and now it looks like you're stuck here until you fulfill a mysterious goal— or the lighthouse keeper resets the town. Maybe you've come to terms with your death and maybe you haven't, but it's a difficult task; you're basically grieving for yourself. And you know what they say makes grief easier? A tangible place to do it.

During the "night", or at least when the most people are sleeping, a curious thing happens in the Bonfire Square. Dozens of shrines, altars, and other memorials appear seemingly out of nowhere, lined up in rows like a haphazard cemetery. Each one is covered in candles, and each bears an image or a name (or in some cases, both,) of a current resident of the town. The air around these monuments is solemn and reverent, and it instills in visitors an urge to pay respects.

Doing so, however, may have surprising results.

the details

The shrines appear on July 12th. Each one is unique, and can look however a player wishes to correspond to their character. It can be an actual grave site, a pagan altar, a household shrine, a roadside shrine— anything you like, so long as it's some form of memorial for the dead. (Yes, the NPCs get them too.)

Characters who visit the makeshift cemetery will feel the need to make offerings of some kind at the shrines of others. These offerings can be just about anything a character wants to place, but doing so will cause them to experience the death of the character whose shrine they're offering at. These brief (we hope) hallucinations include visual information as well as feeling and thought. You'll get to learn exactly what happened to your friends (or enemies), but you'll have to decide if the pain is worth it.

After making your offering(s), you may want to check in on the people whose deaths you saw. Maybe now you can comfort someone in a way you couldn't before, maybe now you understand them better. Or maybe you just want to taunt them. Up to you. It's also entirely possible that you don't want anyone to know how you died. But do you really want to guard your own grave for a week?

After July 19th, the shrines will vanish, just as mysteriously as they appeared. When they do, characters will receive all offerings placed at their shrines, in the form of a package at the post office.

the tl;dr

  • July 12th shrines appear

  • Each character gets their own unique shrine

  • Making offerings at shrines causes you to experience the deaths of others

  • July 19th the shrines vanish and characters receive their offerings

rafe adler | uncharted

[personal profile] chardismastic 2019-07-10 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Rafe will initially scope out the graves (minus his own) as a curiosity but will be ignoring the urge to lay any offerings. After all, he's very good at ignoring emotions and dumping them in a basement before covering them with concrete. Once he realizes — either through network posts or through people approaching him — what the headstones allow people to see and feel, he's going to find something large and blunt with which to demolish the living shit out of his grave. Doesn't matter that it'll just pop up again, he'll get a good workout in breaking that one too. And the next. And the seven after that! 😃 Get the fuck out of his head! 😃

For all those who get to Rafe's grave before he realizes this, they'll see this extra as hell thing, featuring some flowery script and purple mori prose on Rafael Adler, with the dates reading 1979-2015 but no picture. The bare bones of what you'll witnessing are Rafe arguing with his mercenary girlfriend and her soldiers while being led along by Sam Drake, Nate's brother, in the moments right before Sam sets off several gunpowder-packed mummies left as booby traps on the way to Avery's ship. And then you'll all get to experience what being exploded feels like. Super fun....

so here's what i propose — by this many days of knowing each other (sup backtagging a coupla things), she's gathered that any kind of invasion of his privacy is like a hyperbolic betrayal, so anything she picks up from him, like we've been talking about, is purely because he kind of projects like an atomic bomb inside a stove pot. mostly accidental, even when she's trying hard not to.

i think she could come up on him trying to destroy his grave so desperately that, of course, all he's thinking about is what people would see if they were to get to it — and the scene hits her full blast anyway without either one of them being able to help it.

thoughts?

[personal profile] necromantiae 2019-07-10 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
what's up, let's do this.

while ambrose has hinted at this to a few people, if you come upon his tombstone, you're going to see the dates 1929-2019 because ambrose is about ninety years old even if he doesn't look it. warlocks are long lived (nearly immortal but they can be killed). he'll just talk about his moisturizer regime.

his tombstone is going to be simple. just a headstone with his name and dates and something like loyal to the end. i'll come up with something solid later.

if you do choose to approach his tombstone and offer something, you're going to see a rather violent death at the hands of angelic witch hunters (visuals here and her and here). ambrose suffers a lot and it's bloody and painful so enjoy.

Boromir's tomb will be some ornate shit, with like a full-size stone statue of him lying in repose on top of it. You know, normal Gondorian stuff? It's got a plaque with his name on it somewhere too, in case that wasn't identifying enough. However, the tomb itself is empty.

We've all seen his death probably? Here it is on YouTube. Also here. There's no videos with both parts of this that aren't the Lego version? Anyway, he killed like twenty-five orcs singlehandedly in some kind of absurd maelstrom of death and then he took some arrows to the chest and his short friends got taken away after all. Then some rando showed up and killed the last orc. Aragorn is that one kid who doesn't work on the group project and just shows up for the presentation.

MAN. This is so cool!! Jesse's grave will be unmarked. There will be no grave markers, nothing at all to indicate that it's a grave, other than the freshly dug dirt; Jesse was killed in the desert and his body was crudely dumped there. I can't find a clip on youtube of the exact moment I've taken Jesse's canon point from, but I've taken screencaps, so if you're unfamiliar with Breaking Bad, you'll at least have a visual idea of what Jesse's last moments were!

What people will see of Jesse's death, if they come upon his grave, is this (in point form):
» This is what the place where Jesse dies looks like — the middle of the New Mexican desert;
» Jesse was dragged out from under a car where he was hiding and made to kneel on the ground. Walter White was standing there watching all of this;
» There was a guy standing behind Jesse with a gun, and he pointed it at his head, about to shoot him;
» Walt told the guy to stop, and while Jesse was kneeling there, Walt told Jesse something that utterly destroys Jesse (video clip);
» Walt then tells the guy holding the gun to "do it", Jesse looks up at the sky and sees two eagles soaring, which is the last thing he sees before he accepts that this is it and is shot dead point-blank.
I don't want any characters knowing who anybody is that's standing around Jesse — I would like to play with Jesse slowly revealing over time what he was involved in back in his world. But your character is free to witness Jesse's final moment in as much or as little detail as you'd like!

peter parker → marvel

[personal profile] webshoots 2019-07-10 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
jesus welcome to comics if u don't read them........

pete's headstone will be pretty simple and have his full name (peter benjamin parker, followed by he was loved.). the short version is that he was killed by vermin. (that's actually vermin with a capital v...). he puts up a fight, but he’d have been pretty exhausted by this point and it'd all be very violent and painful; other emotions will include horror (especially when he realises the apparent scope of kraven’s plan) and resolute determination. i can (will probably) do a write-up for anyone who wants to explore his death, but otherwise i’ve linked the pages applicable below (you can pick and choose how much backstory you'd like tbh.)

as far as this goes, he's going to be pretty horrified once he realises that they can see each other's deaths, and is going to be pretty pissed off about it. once the revelation is out, he won't go out of his way to visit anyone's graves* because jesus christ, but he will (eventually) want to check up on people because this is all pretty traumatic okay and he'd prefer to distract himself.

* but feel free to lmk somewhere if you'd like for ~~shared trauma~~ or whatever and i am happy to work something out.

riku replica, kingdom hearts.

[personal profile] replicates 2019-07-10 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
the replica's shrine will basically be this funky looking sword sticking up from the earth along with this yellow star shaped charm hanging from the hilt. the charm just so happens to look exactly like his lantern, which is about the only thing linking him to it for those that don't recognize the sword. there's no date and no name anywhere on the shrine because lol fakes don't get names.

anyway, his death(s) come in 2 flavors:
option 1: the replica challenges a visibly younger riku to a final show down where he hopes he can finally become a Real Boy(tm) upon defeating him. unfortunately, he gets his ass handed to him by the real thing and fades away into darkness. the big takeaway from his death is a lot of emotional pain: loneliness, emptiness, the bitterness/frustration of being nothing but a fake; there's a thread of relief running beneath that though, at finally being able to break free from that endless cycle of emptiness.

option 2: some time later, the replica has reunited with riku and resides in his heart as he no longer has a physical body. after riku defeats Dark Riku (another version of the replica it's confusing i know), the replica comes out from his heart like some kind of patronus and rips Dark Riku's heart out, leaving an empty vessel behind. riku tells him to take the vessel so that he can become whole again, but he refuses, saying "the world already has you" and tells him to give the vessel to namine instead, thus sacrificing himself and his chance at humanity. him and Dark Riku's heart eventually fade in a mix of dark and light energy, finally able to rest now that he'd fulfilled his promise.

he'll be hanging around the shrine for a bit at first since it's been a while since the first time he died and also, the star charm holds a lot of significance to him. as far as deaths go, his aren't nearly as traumatic but once he catches on that the offerings and death viewings are related, he'll try to deter people from coming near his before ollie-ing out of there. he won't go around visiting other people's graves, but i'm down to plot something out to make the trauma sharing party happen if you wanna i'm easy ok

feel free to leave a comment here or hit me up on plurk @ [plurk.com profile] wooloos! i belatedly realized i never did an ooc intro so hi guys i'm ame and i play this dumbass here. :')

well, she... already lays out regular offerings to hozier whatever is in the basement, so this one is kind of Inevitable. she'll scope out quite a few graves, though if someone clearly doesn't want anyone to see their death (ie, protecting their own grave aggressively), she'll take that as a 'no'.

as for her grave: it'll be a simple red stone shrine, with space to hold candles and some incense. the writing on the stone is in asshai'i, but thanks to the tablet, that one won't be a problem (also, i mean, we're using Regular Numbers and it's A RED STONE THING, it won't take a lot of guesswork).

oh yeah baby, area hot lady lived to be over 400 years old and will be just as surprised about that one as you are. she knew she was old, but that old?

the gist of what can be witnessed at this hot new attraction around town is the joy of being stabbed to death while being way more concerned about there being no light rather than, y'know, the stabbing part. the stabbing part is still painful, though. besides, she had flashbacks all morning that day, so you'll get some of those as a bonus. mostly it'll be a lovely, freaky look into her mind.

as a special note: while she is not excited about the look into her mind, she'll be very touched by anyone who leaves her an offering, because that kind of means a lot to her.

If we are going to have Bri allowing Mel to see how she died she would probably feel sort of obligated to walk a mile in Mel's shoes in kind, but she would ask first because to her this whole thing is a massive breach of privacy that doesn't surly right with her in any way.

Riku - Kingdom Hearts

[personal profile] equinoctials 2019-07-10 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
Riku's monument is a Delphic Tripod. The engravings around the two front sides of the cauldron/seat of the tripod show a figure facing down a storm with some kind of broadsword, and the same figure floating in an empty space.

Those who leave offerings may witness one or both of the following:

(1) SPOILERS FOR KH3, Riku's act of self-sacrifice to prove his friend was not powerless alone. Those experiencing this option will find they face their end with calm, single-minded resolve and no regrets, even though the fathomless cold of Darkness gnawing away at their body is probably going to stick with the witness for some time.

(2) MORE SPOILERS AHOY, Riku's habit of diving headlong after his best friend into almost certain doom shows no sign of stopping. In this one, he attempts to use the Power of Waking to find Sora after his disappearance, the result of misuse of the same power. It works - but because Sora is dead... Riku simply goes where he went. This one is more of an abrupt lights-out. Like dropping into, then floating in a sea of deep, silent dark.

Daylight vis Lornlit | Original.

[personal profile] sunborne 2019-07-10 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)

DAYLIGHT'S GRAVE
Daylight’s grave will be a lit firepit, positoned on a stand. It's proportional to his size so it's pretty big, made of polished marble and accented with polished gold metal. The fire in the bowl doesn't emit light, of course, but the intensity of the heat cannot be denied when one gets close enough to it.

There's a plating that's been fixed on the stand of the firepit. Inscribed on it is the following:

Daylight vis Lornlit, the Sunsung.
Kindled of Radiance vis Noxolarium, the Sundered Star.
Kindled from Lorem Laurel.

Deserved better.

DAYLIGHT'S INTERACTIONS
He’s going to make it a point to leave offerings to those he has friendly CR with! Even after since his first experience with what happens after giving said offers - he'll be visiting the NPCs' graves first, if he finds them! He wants to give his respects to those who were here the longest - he'll continue to leave offerings to show leave his condolences and respects to those he like well enough. It seems only right to acknowledge what happened to them and show he cares for them in his own way.

He'll be leaving paper flowers on each grave as his offering. If someone opens the flower, they'll see that Daylight had written a little note inside it. If I have Daylight leave an offering on your character's grave, you'll be getting a PM from me that stares what the note is upon the end of the event when your character gets the offering! (Also I should let you guys know that this paper is proportionate to his size so they're pretty big as well. Good luck, folks who get these.)

If people interact with his grave and he learns about it, he'll be visibly uncomfortable with this but not talk about his discomfort because or ask them to stop because? What can he say? "Don't pay respects to my death?" That seems pretty rude to do so he'll just reenact the This is Fine meme in his processors.

DAYLIGHT'S DEATH
For those who interact with Daylight’s grave, they'll receive a full-blown experience of the events of Daylight's death. They'll see it, they'll hear it, and they'll not only feel his emotions but hear his thoughts too. He died from being shot through the chassis after he took the shot for someone else, jumping in the second he sees they're in danger. His chassis/chest was essentially torn to shreds from the blast and, despite his friends and fellow crewmates' interventions, they were unable to stabilise him.

So the person will not only feel pain and fear as Daylight succumbs to his (pretty painful) wounds but also feel the sense of betrayal and bewilderment since he got shot by someone he trusted and thought of as a close friend. The fact the person is staring at him, showing no remorse in her face whatsoever, doesn't help alleviate the pain. Over-all the death is meant to evoke a pretty painful and terrifying experience. Though it should be noted is that, despite it all, not once does he regret taking the shot.

[personal profile] broplaints 2019-07-10 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
(The game is a couple of years old now, but! Noct's death comes with major spoilers for Chapter 8. Just in case!)

Noctis was killed in Chapter 8 during his battle with Leviathan - where by all accounts he should have died anyway, had Luna and Ignis not saved his entire ass.

His death was, well, a lot. That whole ordeal was a lot. I'm honestly sorry for anyone who decides to witness the battle of the idiot prince and the over grown sea snake.

Noct's alter will basically be a miniature version of the royal tombs. These things are huge, so it'll have been shrunk down considerably. The statue above the door will be one of Luna, holding the Trident of the Oracle. His name will also be written on the doors:

King Noctis Lucis Caelum CXIV
M.E: 736 - M.E: 756

vanitas | kingdom hearts

[personal profile] evulsed 2019-07-10 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Vanitas' marker is a free standing version of this thing, about as big around as a sun dial— but the stained glass is shattered. The part with Vanitas on it will be visible, though cracked, but the other half where the other boy should be is broken, leaving nothing but shards of multicolored glass behind and a dark hole beneath.

People visiting his grave will have two options, and they'll feel more emotional than physical:
one: The destruction of Vanitas and the x-Blade. Characters witnessing this will feel, at the final blow, like their heart has been literally broken in half (because it has). Following that will be desperation, fear, and a sense of losing everything they've ever wanted. After that will be the sense of falling into darkness— no sight, taste, smell, or hearing. What they will feel is very warm and safe, though. Strange, that...

two (also SPOILERS): Characters will be forced to stand through this conversation while the strength saps out of their body at a steady clip, as though they are bleeding fatally from somewhere they can't see. The sense here is one of finality, as Vanitas really believes he can't be anything more than the darkness, or the villain. It's less a sense of peace at the moment of death and more a sense of the inability to fight fate.

Toward the end of the week getting close to it will be difficult because Vanitas' Unversed will be hanging around the dial and will attack anyone who gets close. They're easy to kill though so feel free to just... do that... they act as a sort of silent alarm, so if they get destroyed he'll pop out of no where to hassle any character still hanging around.

Jon Snow | Game of Thrones

[personal profile] song_of_ice 2019-07-10 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Jon will pay a visit to the different graves. The offerings compulsion will seem natural to him, as Westerosi custom often has people leave some form of offering at the grave that they visit. He's going to definitely be intrigued by the different deaths people have gone through (since he's currently dealing with a need to keep feeling anything rather than what he did during his first death.) He's going to be less tight lipped about his as well.

Jon's statue will be the usual Northern shrine: a statue of him with a direwolf at his side and his sword in his hands. However because Jon has a secret parentage he doesn't know about, there will be a dragon to his left as well. Something to confuse him.

For those that want to experience his death, he was Beyond the Wall, surrounded by zombies. A giant dragon was just knocked out of the sky and killed. Jon was running towards Daenerys and his group, urging them to flee before he's knocked into the icy lake by a group of undead. So there is a lot of freezing, ice and water to enjoy. (Hopefully no one has a fear of drowning).

I'm up for anything. What a perfect time for him to meet new people!

Kuai Liang (Sub-Zero) | Mortal Kombat

[personal profile] paletteswap 2019-07-10 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Kuai's grave will be a stone tomb with grass growing over it similar to this.

Kuai Liang
Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei

But in Chinese so...

快涼
大师林鬼

And yes if you put that into Google translate you will realize his name is an ice pun but this is a SOLEMN OCCASION EVERYONE.

For his actual death it is not the image in this icon, which he survived no thanks so someone's best efforts to let him bleed out everywhere *coughcoughHanzo*.

Instead he was ripped apart by demons in the Netherrealm. You can see him fighting them here. (And just enjoy Sub-Zero and Scorpion showing off because it looks awesome). His actual death comes on this bridge where they get overrun and he's going to get literally ripped apart which is very painful but fortunately rather quick. Less fortunately it's not the ideal death he wanted, so he's not exactly happy about it.

As for him during the event he is a delicate ice sculpture of emotions so he will probably leave offerings for half the town and be super traumatized at the end of this.

Brienne of Tarth | ASoIaF

[personal profile] chivalrouswench 2019-07-10 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
As soon as Brienne knows what happens with the shrines she will not put down any offerings without permission, but she might do it ONCE on accident so if you want your character's death to be how she learns what is going on then we can do something with that. If you want your character to give her permission, we can work something out there too!

SPOILERS FOR A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE AHEAD

Trigger warnings: child death, self-mutilation, cannibalism

As I am not entirely sure what the burial conventions on Tarth are, Brienne is going to get herself a life-size statue of herself seated with her sword Oathkeeper across her knees and a crystal fitted into her breastplate because sometimes people who observe the Fath of the Seven use crystals as grave markers. On the base of the statue his written:

Brienne of Tarth
280 AC ~ 300 AC

As for what people will experience should they choose to leave an offering I'll try not to get too rambly but it's a little complicated.

So, once upon a time Brienne swore her service to a woman called Catelyn Stark. Said woman sent her out on a mission to bring back a guy called Jaime Lannister to his family because she hopes that in exchange she can get her daughters back. Important to know here is that:

1. Jaime is a prisoner of war and an important hostage, and Catelyn is going behind the backs of a lot of people to make this happen.

2. She still hates Jaime because he pushed one of her sons out of a window when the boy caught him having some incesty fun with his twin sister. What a charmer.

So. Brienne and Jaime go on a road trip full of misery where nothing ends up going to plan, and they kind of bond and even though Jaime is still an awful guy Brienne now cares rather a lot about him and he sort of wants to regain some of his lost honour.

With me so far?

IN ANOTHER END OF WESTEROS Catelyn gets brutally murdered, along with her oldest son and lots of other people. It's terrible, and the head of the Lannister family was involved behind the scenes. Cat goes mad with grief before her throat is slit, and claws her own face to shreds. Her naked body is thrown in a river.

A while later, said body is found by a band of outlaws who are sort of doing a vigilante justice type thing, and among them is a priest who can bring people back from the dead, and the leader of the gang who keeps getting resurrected. Well, now they have a disagreement whether or not it's a good idea to bring Cat back, which ends up with the outlaw leader basically giving his own life to Cat instead. So now she is an undead horror because she is still a bloated drowned corpse with a cut throat. She also takes over leadership of the outlaw band and starts being called Lady Stoneheart.

BACK TO BRIENNE who does eventually get Jaime to his family, but Cat is dead and none of her daughters are actually there anymore. So, Jaime gives her a very fancy sword who was actually made for him and thus very obviously meant to belong to a Lannister, and sends her out on a quest to find the one of Cat's daughters they know to be alive.

While on this quest, she also gets herself a squire called Pod, who is just a kid, and a dude called Hyle Hunt tags along as well. On their travels, as per usual horrible shit happens and whilst trying to protect an inn full of orphan children Brienne breaks an arm and a couple of ribs, and also has half her cheek eaten by a cannibal. After this fight, Bri and her companions end up being captured by the outlaws led by Stoneheart AND NOW AT LAST WE ARRIVE AT MY ACTUAL POINT I AM SO SORRY. Basically what follows here is what will actually be experienced by those who put offerings by Bri's grave, I just didn't know how to make it make sense without giving the backstory.

Lady Stoneheart puts Brienne on trial and accuses her of now serving the Lannisters, because of her fancy sword. Brienne tries to explain about Jaime and her quest, but Stoneheart is not exactly a reasonable type and so tells Brienne that she has a choice: Noose or Sword.

Either she will be hanged, or she will find Jaime Lannister and kill him.

Brienne refuses to choose, and so is hanged, along with Pod and Hyle Hunt, so whoever sees Bri's death will share the last thing she sees which is a little boy struggling in a noose.

D O N E

I am so sorry this got so long.

[personal profile] carriedbylight 2019-07-10 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so Kairi will be visiting the shrines and will leave some offerings here and there. If you're interested in her visiting your character's grave, let me know!

Kairi's grave will be fairly simple. Some sea shells and tropical flowers probably arranged in a wicker basket on top of a tombstone that simply has her name on it. SPOILERS!! Here is the video of how Kairi actually died. She wasn't conscious during her death, so anyone leaving an offering would probably just experience darkness and then a severe pain across their back.

The shrine will go unguarded, so anyone who wants to visit can do so.

Jo Harvelle | Supernatural

[personal profile] knifecollecting 2019-07-10 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
In canon, Jo died in a little hardware store in Carthage, Missouri trying to stop Lucifer from raising Death and the other Horsemen to eradicate humans via the Apocalypse.

A demon shows up with a bunch of Hellhounds, and Jo gets mauled by one trying to protect Dean, Sam and her mother from the invisible monsters. Hellhounds are massive and deadly, one swipe is all it took to start the end. Carthage was emptied, the inhabitants possessed, there was no hospital and Jo knew it was The End quickly.

But she refused to go down without fighting. Hunters are nothing if not ingenious and she suggests a bomb to take the Hellhounds out and give the Winchesters and her mother a chance to stop Lucifer. However, by the time the bomb is ready to go, she can't move due to the massive blood loss and the extent of internal damage. Her mother decided to stay. This is Jo's biggest regret - that her mother stayed to make sure the job was done. In canon, she has no memorial and there was barely time to mourn her. There are probably no official records of her death at 24.

Jo blacked out before the explosion, but she thinks about it a lot. She hopes her mother didn't feel it.

Her 'grave' will be a simple marker, a wood cross with Joanna Beath Harvelle carved into the cross section. There will be no dates, just a second line that says Brave

Anyone who leaves an offering will experience the first blow and that pain. If they stick around, they'll be carried into the hardware store and follow Jo's thought process as her legs go numb and she realizes there's no way to get her out of this. She has to do something. This is when she suggests the bomb and readies herself for her death. Here are her goodbyes.

Whoops, forgot: Jo will stop to pay respects, but probably after a few visions, she'll quit. She has seen a lot of death in her time, more isn't going to help.

Mary | Ib

[personal profile] withsadness 2019-07-11 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Mary

Her name is marked on a golden nameplate that has holes at the ends, suggesting it used to be attached to something. It's singed, as if it was pulled from a fire, and has no other detailing. Aside from being held in any kind of shrine, it rests in the lap of a spooky looking little doll. Upon the start of the event, Mary will visit only a couple of graves, leaving offerings likely more out of compulsion than genuine desire. Naturally, the experience will frighten her.

But it won't be fright that has her running back to her own grave as much as desperation. For the remainder of the week, she'll refuse to move from the spot, becoming hostile to anyone who comes too close or tries to persuade her from her position. Mary doesn't want anyone to see what's hidden in that memory. Still, you have plenty of opportunity to leave your offerings and see for yourself! Here are the different options I plan on presenting:

1. At the very start of the event Mary, unaware of what's going to happen, will have ignored her own shrine in favor of others. It will be a fairly short window of opportunity, as she'll stop visiting them very quickly, but a window just the same. If you want, she can even catch you coming out of the memory as she's running to start her guard.

2. For the majority of the rest of the week, Mary will be standing guard over her grave. She is, of course, only a little girl. If you're determined enough, you can simply force your way past...though you might end up with a wound or two for your trouble. Likewise, any other kind of persistence will be met with hostility, but there are plenty of ways, nonviolent or otherwise, to get past her. Incur her wrath!

3. If anyone who's made a particularly close connection with her approaches her grave, she'll still tell them to go away, but if they express why they want to leave an offering on it, she could be persuaded to stand down. It'll be clear that she's afraid to trust what may come of any of her pre-standing relationships once what it seen can't be unseen. As long as she can be convinced that her friendships will remain intact, and the individual in question promises not to share what they see, she'll give her permission.

4. Later in the week Mary will succumb to the effects of purposefully refusing to go to sleep. Her lantern will have dimmed, and she'll have fallen into a deep, heavy sleep in front of her grave. Do with this what you will! Take the chance to leave an offering, get her a little blanket, or even take her back to her room. After this point, the memorial will be completely open to anyone.

THE DEATH
Naturally, this involves the death of a child, so read on only if that isn't a trigger for you!

Characters will find themselves in a strange world that's nothing but darkness. It's only substance comes in the form of crayon sketching that seems to have taken dimension and given tangibility to the void it lives in. Once there, they'll find a strange room that holds a blank painting...and a different little girl holding a lighter. Scared and desperate, Mary will brandish a palette knife and rush at Ib, screaming for her to leave, but Ib will set the canvas on fire. Instantly, Mary, too, will burst into flames, and the characters will experience the anguish she felt as she faded into ash, staring in the face of the only friend she'd ever made before.

Hello hello hello I would love to do a combination of 3 + 4, perhaps? Daylight wants to leave an offering for Mary since that's his plan but she at first refuses. When she falls asleep, Daylight, instead of taking a chance to leave an offering, gets her a blanket and gently wakes her up and offers to stand guard with her to keep others away? I love their CR a lot and I just want Day to give her a big giant flower. ; O ;

Dick's a huge busybody and will be checking out at least a few, leaving some hand-carved offerings and denying all knowledge of them. for his own shrine, Dick's death was quick having been taken over by Trigon, who drained the life out of him. it's bloodless, but it'd be painful to experience. he WILL be making at least one attempt to destroy the shrine so there might be three or four popping up after that and he won't be happy about it, but if you want to avoid him being dickish about your character being there, you can hop to one of those instead of interacting with him directly.

i'm looking to give current and new cr some talking points, because he's not going to want to discuss it too much but have to anyway, as he'll be exploring the other shrines. there's nothing that would reveal he's a superhero, but he's obviously being involved in some magic and occult stuff.

this is what his headstone looks like. it'll read:

[personal profile] sulfa 2019-07-12 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Wade's going to stay away from the graves once he knows what leaving an offering does, but he'll probably experience one or two from leaving an offering on and not realizing until it's too late.

His grave is a battlefield cross minus the boots - a rifle jammed barrel-first into the ground with his red cross helmet on the stock and dogtags hanging from one of the rifle's outcrops. It neighbors Gene's, which is set up in the same way - i.e., two graves for dead noncombatants and none others from their war, which characters familiar with the symbols of WWII will likely notice. If your character knows about the Geneva Convention, they'll know that both of them were supposed to be protected under the Geneva Code. Pretty grim.

Those who leave offerings for Wade will experience his violent death (tw for blood, guns, etc) - and potentially also segments of his experience landing on Omaha Beach; he's not going to be thrilled about people living out his death and will see it as a pretty big invasion of his privacy. He hasn't told any of the people who know he was shot to death about the fact that he asked for a lethal overdose on morphine - not because of any real shame, but simply because it feels like very personal, private information.

So yea hmu!

Annie will definitely be visiting a bunch of shrines, because clearly there's something linking the people who were dragged here, she needs more data, etc.

Her own shrine will be an open-faced dollhouse-sized construct lovingly crafted from an assortment of apparently-random stuff - think pipe cleaners and popsicle sticks and mismatched utensils, scraps of fabric and beads and feathers. It will be very well constructed, but look like the building materials were scavenged from someone's junk drawer. Inside the shrine will be three pictures. Two of these are actual photographs, one of a group of high school aged girls in cheerleading uniforms, and one of a roller derby team. The third is a flyer for a knife act. None of them have the same name on them - Annie's position in the two photographs corresponds with the names "Melody West" and "Annie Thompson" respectively, and the third is for a Timpani Brown. There's a small plaque at the base of the shrine labeled "The Precise Priestess - may her blades fly ever true".

There will be at least two copies of the shrine, because Annie is definitely going to try to destroy the damned thing at least once.

Anyone leaving an offering at Annie's shrine will find themself in a pocket dimension midway through banishing an eldritch horror. Since your average eldritch horror doesn't much like cooperating with banishment, they'll first get to experience the pain of being unmade by a being of entropy, including flashes of people dying because they/she wasn't there when she was supposed to be because she'll never have existed, and when that threat doesn't work, they get to experience being burned alive from the inside out by their/her own magic.

Unfortunately, succeeding in banishing the eldritch horror doesn't undo the damage it's done, so after a brief chat with the anima mundi once it's been magically dewormed, they'll get to experience slipping away while their friends try desperately to revive them. Have fun?

[personal profile] darkeyed 2019-07-12 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
sdlfkj this event came at the best time after I was jUST TALKING ABOUT THIS ON PLURK........

Congratulations! If you stumble across M.K.'s grave, you'll find another simple, semi-unmarked memorial that looks like it was done in haste on the spot because that's how you roll during war when soldiers are falling all the time. The custom in Azra seems to be to burn the dead by dipping the fallen's weapons in oil and lighting the pyre with them, so his will be marked by two burning (Beacon's brand of shadowy fire only!) scimitars alongside a small wooden marker engraved with this. Whaddya know, it matches the symbol on the armor he's been walking around in.

You can watch his LOCAL VILLAIN HAS A COME TO JESUS MOMENT death here. Comparatively, it's a one and done killing blow before he (you) really knows what's happening, but there's plenty of emotional blowback to go around. Mainly in him having one of those Final Moments™ epiphanies and realizing he's become a person who doesn't deserve to live. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(For the curious, you can watch the whole battle here: part I, the start and end of part II, and part III.)

    THINGS OF POTENTIAL INTEREST

    • The memory is of fighting as him, so characters will get to physically feel what it's like in a souped up dark chi mode! He's also just fucking Done and willing to do whatever it takes to win, expect a big whiff of that on an emotional scale.

    • He has a long, antagonistic history with the older woman (she imprisoned him, tortured him, gave him his scars) so there's personal satisfaction in getting to kill her...

    • ... WHICH MAKES WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS THAT MUCH WORSE as her daughter jumps in the way. Who also happens to be his childhood sweetheart. Also the one person left in the world he's tried not to hurt, to the extent he spared her in the fight earlier. It's his point of realizing he's become a monster after a long time spent going down a dark path. (Made even worse by the fact they used to be hella soft and her already having tried to talk him out of this shit once before bYE.)

    • He's not so much afraid as resigned and a bit relieved when it's over. Basically there's just a metric ton of heavy feelings to unpack, you've been warned.

M.K. won't be trying to hide or turn people away from his grave, so have at it!
