EVENT INFO: BURY A FRIEND

EVENT INFO: BURY A FRIEND
the basics
The hallucinations begin without warning, and characters may not even realize they're hallucinating at first. It starts small, minute inconsistencies spotted out of the corner of an eye or mishearing a noise in the forest... Little things that could be waved off as the mind playing tricks, at least in the first couple of days.
As the event continues, the hallucinations will grow more intense. What your character sees, hears, or feels is up to you, but there's one consistent theme: Disembodied hands that appear from the darkness to puppet people and things around town. By the final days of the event, they're inescapable, appearing even in dreams. Worse than that, now they're trying to puppet you.
the details
While all characters will be affected in some way by this event, how affected and/or what your character experiences is entirely up to you. There's just a few ground rules to keep in mind:
- Hallucinations can't be shared. Meaning, no, your friend didn't see that sculpture move, they can't hear that mysterious ticking noise, they don't feel the water gathering at their ankles... Hallucinations also won't be able to be recorded in any way. Time for some storytelling, it seems.
- The hallucinations will gradually worsen over the course of the event. Not that your characters will know when the event ends ICly, mind you. It's possible for characters not to experience any hallucinations until the end of the event, though. By the final days, sometimes people won't even look like people anymore, but more like forest spirits or even corpses.
- The hallucinations aren't constant (unless you want them to be). They do come and go, thankfully. Probably. Feel free to be extra mean to your character!
- It's impossible to truly tell what's real and what's not. Alone, anyway. Characters can reality check with each other, of course, and they can also make educated guesses! The fact that hallucinations are happening will likely become common knowledge relatively quickly after the event begins, but no one will be able to definitively say what's real and what's not while it's happening. ICly, it all seems very, very real.
The aforementioned hands are the star of the event. They can be seen (or felt, or... heard?) yanking things around, be it people or items or forest spirits or your character themselves. They're not gentle, that's for sure. If you'd like an example of these hands at work, here's a sneak peak of our event song: Bury a Friend by Billie Eilish (cw for needles, flashing lights).
the tl;dr
- October 9: The hallucinations begin, gradually worsening throughout the event
- The main feature of the hallucinations are the disembodied hands puppetteering people and forest spirits, but any and all hallucinations are possible
- See the above "rules", but otherwise, it's a hallucination event feat. hands... Pretty cut and dry!
- October 17: The hallucinations end

Say someone with telekinesis were to attempt to tear off hands/break fingers. Would that basically just run into nothing, or would that risk, say, accidentally hurting the person currently being handled?
(see what I did there, I'm gonna show myself out now)
no subject
Since the hands are hallucinations, Eleven wouldn't really be able to interact with them, though it's possible for her to hallucinate that interaction. We're getting pretty Inceptiony here, but going off of your hypothetical: Eleven's attempt to throw the hands off of someone could result in her telekinesis misfiring somehow, or the attempt could just do nothing. However you want to handle it is fine by us!

During the course of the event, Peter will indeed find his spider-sense telling him that something is off. He won't be able to determine exactly where or what it's coming from, but the feeling will worsen up through the end of the event, just like the hallucinations. The most he'll be able to tell from this is that there's something dangerous beyond the treeline. Hm!

Plot with Jo!!
Anyway. Jo's going to be hallucinating hellhounds, which are invisible giant dogs, in addition to the hands. They can be seen via glasses singed with holy fire, but Jo doesn't know this (and she wouldn't be able to get holy fire anyway).
This means she will be on edge constantly, whether she's hearing them, seeing their effects (scratches on floors, puddles rippling, etc) or not. A hellhound almost immediately killed her with one hit and she knows they don't give up a scent once they have it.
She'll probably be holed up most of the event. When she does leave any building, it will be at a run. Have fun with that!! While she's actively sure there's a hellhound around, she'll be yelling at others to get to safety.
no subject
Will Jo be running around during the early days of the event? Because I was thinking Day, just before his hallucinations really get wild (RIP boy), can come across Jo by total accident. Realise something is up with hers and try to help her through the hallucinations or try to help her by escorting her around and stuff.
(Also: Giving her a piggyback ride so no hellhounds can reach her. Jo will have the high ground now.)
no subject
Jo would be pretty sure the hellhounds could knock him over but she might let him carry her to get away. Surely he could move faster than she could.
When he's having trouble she would try to help there too, though she might not be as successful as she wants.
plot with masaomi!
+ At the beginning of the event, Masaomi will probably go around taking pictures, seemingly of random people and places, and then shoving them in people's faces and asking them what they see. It'll freak him out, but it won't scare him until...
+ He eventually starts seeing the tablets and other innocuous devices in people's hands as weapons/firearms. That's about when he'll stop taking pictures and start trying to disarm everyone. Have fun with that.
+ A good half of the hands he hallucinates will be wearing Izaya's lame rings on their pointer fingers for an additional paranoia bonus. Anyone being manhandled by these hands in particular will get a chance to witness a much jumpier Masaomi who doesn't play so nice. He will probably try to get between the person and the puppeteering hands and laugh a whole lot at very inappropriate moments in order to distract.
+ Near the end of the event, he'll be hallucinating everything from his ex-girlfriend dead or in a hospital bed to rival gang members to the Headless Rider and her shadowy scythe. Your character could be the hallucination, Masaomi could be trying to protect them from the hallucination, or anything in between. I want all the things.

I'm hoping to have Kol hear and believe his own girlfriend is dying toward the end of the event (which might be a great talking point later down the line for the both of them!). Maybe we can hook up hallucinations? I figure it might work well to have Kol run and react to his hallucination and Masaomi, in his own, wanting to protect him from whatever he sees (the Headless Rider??). If you want Masaomi knocked out of it, I can have Kol break out of his (I imagine believing someone you love is dead can only last for so long) and probably knock Masaomi out.
idk those are just some ideas, but you had me at dead ex-girlfriend.
no subject
Masaomi would try to prevent anyone from getting too close to the Headless Rider, so if he saw Kol running toward her, he would intercept for sure! Dullahans are dangerous, okay. You gotta look both ways before crossing this street. If you're looking for them to snap out of it, Masaomi can also try to literally knock Kol out so he can drag him away, but instead of knocking him unconscious, he could just jostle the guy partway out of the hallucination.
P.S. I am canonblind on Kol, but oh my gosh, injured girlfriends is one of the worst talking points for Masaomi, and that means I want it. This is definitely something they could guiltily skirt around later.
no subject
That sounds great! Honestly, slap him—give him a bruise!! He hasn't had a bruise in centuries and he'll easily remember that when all of this is over. (I figure that would be a great reason to follow up! Kol is very sensitive about being injured since he's meant to be immortal and invulnerable. When is this bruise expected to go away? Someone Google this for him.)
I figure throwing two canon blind players against each other is a good idea. It always works out!! (No sarcasm! It does!) I see you on the event so I'll fling Kol at Masaomi and crying over girlfriends can begin. ♥

Running over to the event thread after grocery shopping tonight. Thanks for being patient with me!
no subject
Thanks for the future advice, Masaomi. He should host the Bachelor!! In all seriousness, whatever comes out of this is going to be great! They should even set up their own love advice service for spirits, js.
no subject
Handing out love advice to people who didn't ask for it is Masaomi's specialty. This is will go so well.
Re: plot with masaomi!
It could be fun! Though I do think Jason would probably outclass him, unless he's got an actual weapon?
no subject
If you want Masaomi to really go for the kill, I know the perfect guy he could be hallucinating too.

miserablewonderful time handling everyone else's crazy shit on top of his own. :') Canonically, he has a history with false memories/not being in control of himself/not being able to trust himself, i.e. having the impression he murdered his mother bare-handed that felt entirely real to him when it was essentially just a vivid hallucination, so I'm looking forward to piggybacking on that canon fear of not knowing what's real. This might lead him into accidentally hurting people with his murder powers if you catch him at a jumpy moment, wHOOPS, SO SORRY...
Reaches for absolutely everyone, tho'. If you have something in mind or want to do something with the boy, hit me up!

Content warning for graphic description of bodily harm and description + imagery of body horror.
For the duration of the event, I decided to go all out for Daylight and have him face to two intense experiences:
What's a failed hybrid? Humanoids and mechanoids who attempted to become robotic-human hybrid like Daylight, usually through extensive surgery of robotic implants or human organ/body grafts, but a mutated form of something known Metalleuein Destruire / Kaayk's disease caused this attempt to go horribly, horribly wrong. They usually end up looking like something similar to the Husk from Mass Effect 3, only much more prone to leaking ichor down their eyes, mouth, and open wounds found scattered on their body where armour/hide has fallen off. (Reference images: Image A, Image B, Image C.)
His hallucinations will have him envision his armour leaking ichor, greying and rusting - Then falling off, either by itself or by the hands - both human and Galateion types - tearing them off as he hears voices yelling at him for being a monster, a freak, a mishmash mistake. He'll also be experiencing auditory hallucinations of his voice slowly and surely devolving into static and screeches, making him feel isolated and alone from the others. More so if they insist he's speaking clearly because he'll get insecure/paranoid that they're mocking him.
I want to be especially evil and have him hear the voices or see the hands of his CR but this is completely opt-in! Unless you explicitly say so, the hands he'll see will be general human and/or Galateion servos.
Experience 02: Good old fashioned hauntings!
The other thing he'll experience is hearing whispers and crying from the sketches of his family members in his sketchpads. They'll look normal to him at first but then he'll begin to notice scowls and sneers and looks of horror overtake their expressions the more he checks on them.
Not only that but the whispers will be soft murmurs and moans at the start and, over the event, they'll turn to deafening shrieks. Daylight is probably going to end up begging someone, anyone, to take his sketchpads for a while because he's very freaked out by them but he doesn't want to destroy them.
These will range from October 09 to October 17 and, depending on events, Daylight may or may not end up dying because of his paranoia and fear he experiences + his interactions with others throughout the event. He's going to become increasingly hysterial and afraid, to the point he's just going to continuously scream in a desperate attempt to hear himself actually make sounds and not static and he can be found around the area, desperately yanking at his limbs or armour as if trying to get it off him. Fun times.
no subject
#2 really struck me since the one thing Kol holds in high esteem is his family. He could take the sketch pads and return them once everything's hunky dory again! I could easily make him having this purpose of keeping those sketch pads safe be enough to keep his own hallucinations at bay if you don't want to do hallucination/hallucination. I'm also happy if you want to incorporate anything else into it -- I'm not squicked by written body horror and Kol isn't either. (He often was the one pulling people limb from limb.) I figure it'd be a great second impression!
no subject
I'm down with the idea of Day giving his sketchpads to Kol for safekeeping. They're proportional to Daylight's size so he's sorry in advance for lugging that at the poor guy. And I'm open to the idea of the sketchpads being subject to hallucinations on Kol's end! I would love to see how they would be incorporated into his during the event and I'll definitely keep the note of body horror in mind. I'm super excited for this. :>!
Also - I've been writing up a toplevel in advance for the event. If you want, I can make a closed prompt for Kol. Unless you have a toplevel planned yourself and, instead, I can hit that up instead.

I'm happy to tag into yours for this one!
plot w kol
My top level ideas are:
WARNING the videos below have someone burning (Kol) and blood.
- His first permanent death involved being staked and burning—I'll be focusing on the sound of fire and the sensation of burning over being staked. (I should also make him hallucinate that horrible haircut…)
- His second permanent death where his big brother hexed him to die a slow and what was meant to be a lonely death. It seemed like his body just slowly gave up on him, so he'll be imagining his mouth his bloodied, his body slowly giving up on him, and coughing despite being the picture of perfect health.
- One hallucination that's probably a little less intense (??? maybe) is he'll be hearing/seeing Davina dying. (Another big fear of his, whoo!) He does become super practiced in yelling out "DAVINA" in anguish later in canon… He'll hear her yell out for him even when she's not there and possibly try to venture to parts of the town that are dangerous?? Who knows, the heart is nuts.
I'm looking for anyone who might want to knock him out (seriously, take his baseball bat and whack him upside the head), be chased by him, and maybe bitten and fed on by him (not at risk of death!). The only caveat with any of the violence is that Kol does have the ability to make people forget what's happened to them, and compelling someone is something I'd like for him to actually do in game! Kol isn't dumb enough to let someone remember he's bitten them when his cover story involves him not being a vampire.
And I'm also looking to be a part of anyone else's hallucinations as well! Maybe we can have hallucination vs hallucination! Kol's a pretty tough guy and I am happy to have him feel pangs of his own hallucinations but ultimately be able to push them down to focus on someone else. When he has a reason to think beyond himself, he does… sometimes. :| In his bouts of being aware, he'll be worried about the people who have crawled under his skin and become his friends. ♥
Feel free to hmu @ #jaded#0421 on discord if you want to smash ideas together.
Re: plot w kol
I do love... a very good fight. And maybe it's about time he actually got hurt here. 👀
no subject
It doesn't have to lead to being bitten—that's just as far as I want to go in terms of intensity. They can definitely get into a fight! Kol is really fast and pretty strong, so he can rough up Jason however much you like! If that's something you want to do, just let me know how badly you're up for Jason being injured and then obviously when that happens, Kol can snap out of it or somehow be knocked out.

i am NOT planning a toplevel for Matthew, though he is likely going to make a net post discussing using other senses to try and combat the validity of hallucinations. keep an eyeballs emoji out for that one if your char would benefit!!
that said, I'm super happy to huck him at anyone freaking out if they need someone calm and fairly rational to talk them down. he's gonna be hearing things here and there but mostly he's gonna be a straight man for this event and i think it'd be an awesome way to get him to open up about his senses if he uses them to help talk people through their hallucinations. i am happy to tag into your top level for this, i just need to know if you want him! ✨

It's awful, but on the plus side it can't remind her of anything traumatic that doesn't already run through her head on loop constantly.

She will be very appreciative, Masaomi will have immediately won himself an ally if he makes any mention of it/she puzzles it out down the line.
