EVENT INFO: WE ALL STILL DIE
the basics
Part 1:
From June 14-15, the forest spirits provide materials for everyone to make and decorate masks of their own, and provide a variety of simple handmade instruments. They encourage everyone to participate and have fun!
Part 2:
On June 16, the festival begins with a voluntary sacrifice by some of the forest spirits, and those who wish to partake in their consumption are encouraged to do so. Characters who are wearing masks or who have consumed any spirit-stuff begin to succumb to their inner urges to go feral, to give in to violence, and to join The Parade and act as a part of that roving band of merriment and bloodshed. On June 18 the effects subside.
the details
Part 1:
On the "morning" of June 14, residents of Beacon will find that the spirits are setting up for one of the parties they occasionally throw. Crafting materials of moss, bark, branches, some of May's new flowers, braided grassy twine, what was left of the paints in the general store, and all sorts of other items (looks like someone raided the pawn shop and put plastic toys on one table) are available for making masks!
Through mime, charades, and hoot-peeps the spirits manage to convey that this is a celebration they learned from past Beacon residents - a festival for welcoming back the sun is supposed to happen around this time of year, right? Something like that, plus everyone seems so optimistic now that lanterns can be repaired again.
The lack of ferry resupplies means the spirits have gotten creative and provided pan pipes out of grasses and flutes out of hollowed-out branches. All sorts of basic instruments are around or can be made, and the spirits are ready to rope people into impromptu jam sessions at any moment. What a great time!
Part 2:
On June 16, after two whole days to make your masks and practice your instruments, it's time for the revelry to kick into high gear! Eager to do this exciting sun festival the right way, three spirits stand before all the rest on the beach by the harbor. Somewhat reminiscent of the aurora, these three show no hesitation as they sing and cheer and kneel so that a trio of spirits with long, knife-like talons can very abruptly eviscerate them.
Dark, viscous liquid and chunks of spirit-flesh are collected into buckets and some characters who were victims of previous torture may find this all-too familiar. But all of you came through that fine, right? This offering is provided for all who wish to partake, but it is not forced upon anyone. Some of the spirits seem a little conflicted and have a polite sip, while others dig in. It only seems fair that trying to bring back the sun should come with a cost. Thankfully, only having a little taste does not seem to make anyone horribly ill as has happened occasionally in the past when large quantities were consumed.
Throughout the 16th and 17th, changes will slowly occur in characters who have taken part in any of the festivities. The more a character has participated, the more they will change, but their ability to fight their sudden urges is up to you.
Characters will begin to feel compelled to act on their baser, animalistic, and often violent instincts. This can be as subtle as having no filter at first and simply saying whatever comes to mind, but over the course of the second part of the event, they may find themselves descending into aggression toward their friends, loss of intelligible language as they turn toward spirit-like grunts and howls and chirps, increased appetite, and finally they may find themselves filled with an insatiable thirst for violence.
Characters who have consumed spirit flesh in the past through events such as the force-feeding during Wild Heart, or just because they wanted to eat a spirit and find out what happens, will also feel affected as if they had consumed any of the sacrifice in this event. 👀
The spirits will try to herd everyone together and keep the music going, and so affected characters may also feel compelled to take up their instruments, or hum and sing, as they all dance toward The Parade. Several options can occur here:
- Compelled characters may try to convince others to sing and dance with them if they look like they're resisting, or if they're far gone they may outright attack anyone who doesn't party with them (and the Parade spirits are all too eager to help!).
- Compelled characters may in fact dance and party themselves to death by the 18th, if they get too caught up in the madness - otherwise they will drop from exhaustion as their lanterns finally dim.
- Characters who try to resist all of this will find themselves at war with their baser instincts - will they fight back if someone comes to pull them into the Parade, or will they try to pull their friends out despite the madness that has overtaken them?
At any point in Part 2, spirits may enter and leave from threads under a SPIRITS header. Anyone who posts top-levels under this header should not expect a thread directly with a spirit, but rather, this means you are open to spirits doing a bit of threadjacking. Please note that this also means you are willing to accept serious injury or death as a result of these interactions. Spirits will be drawn from an RNG pool and some will be more dangerous than others, but all will be very upset if you're not having The Most Fun, and we know how spirits get when they're offended.
Good news, though! Because lantern repairs are now able to be completed, deaths are not permanent. So have fun. Go feral. Live a little, die a little. It's what we do here.•••
As always, players are welcome to use this post for OOC event plotting! In fact, please do, as not everyone in the game has access to each other's plurks! If you'd like, you can use the small form below to kickstart your plotting plans:
the tl;dr
- June 14-15: Mask- and music-making fun!
- June 16-17: Characters descend into madness, violence, and revelry as they join The Parade or do their best to resist the compulsion
- June 18: The effects gradually end, dancers drop from exhaustion, hopefully some of you are still alive
