EVENT INFO: THE NIGHT WE MET

EVENT INFO: THE NIGHT WE MET

the lore part

For most of the day on February 16, all of the town's forest spirits can be found along the stretch of road between downtown and the harbor, clearly setting up for, uh, something. They're piling snow onto the pathway, creating a miles long sled trail that starts outside the Landmark Inn and ends at the very end of the harbor's dock. Not only that, but the forest spirits are also not super willing to explain what they're up to! They're busy, you lantern-havers.

By the time evening rolls around, the spirits have set up wooden railings alongside the snowy path, as well as a warming tent, hot chocolate booth, and announcer stand outside of the Landmark. Oh, and a starting banner for the race! It's dogsled time!

Throughout the event, Beacon's downtown and harbor areas will be completely overrun with forest spirits, all there to bear witness to this holiday celebration—this holiday is for them, though, not you weirdos with your naked faces. Point is, none of the spirits will be hostile at this time! They're more interested in interacting with each other than with Beacon's residents, though if pressed, a kind spirit might be willing to explain what's going on:

The aurora arrives in Beacon for about a week each year, and the forest spirits believe it to be "friends in the sky". The lights are old friends of theirs, it seems! And each night while the aurora shines above the town, the forest spirits send off a handful of friends to join the aurora! The spirits ready to join the aurora build sleds of their own and assemble mighty sled teams, sometimes comprised of dog spirits and sometimes... other stuff. Then, when the aurora is at its peak in the wee hours of the night, the sled teams will ride off one by one, racing down the snow-covered path all the way down to the harbor, where they'll finally rocket off the dock and out over the lake, picking up more and more speed as each team gallops wildly over the water before arcing up into the sky. Once the spirits are barely a speck, they'll hit the aurora and burst into a shower of light. Beautiful stuff!

See, since the aurora is made of light, forest spirits launched into it are killed on impact! Isn't that wonderful! The forest spirits seem to think so! What is death to a dead thing!

All of this information can be learned through handwaved/played-led interactions with the forest spirits during the event. They'll all be focused on saying goodbye to their friends and cheering them on as they stream through the sky, but they're happy to welcome lantern-havers to join in the celebrations. The hot chocolate is free and only tastes a little bit like mud, so. Enjoy!

Even if you're not interested in the forest spirits' holiday, the arrival of the aurora will give you plenty to celebrate on your own. This is the most light Beacon has had since the game opened in July, as the green glow of the aurora is nearly as bright as an overcast day. Bask in the constant near-daylight for those six days, everyone!

...Oh, and it's a memory sharing event!

the memshare part

As the aurora dances over Beacon and forest spirits explode into shooting stars overhead, meteorites will rain down from the aurora. They're not technically meteorites, but you get the picture. They're opals! If a person closes their hand around one of these rocks, they'll experience the memory locked inside...

According to the forest spirits, the aurora is made up of their old friends, friends that have moved on to another stage in their existence and have had to leave them behind. The memories dropped by the aurora will focus on a person or people that each character has left behind by ending up in Beacon. You are free to interpret this stipulation however you like! The person left behind can be a friend or enemy, alive or dead, etc. The idea is that this event will remind characters of those they have left behind in death, in whatever way that most resonates with them.

Opals can look however you like, and they'll be turning up at random all over town! There's no way to determine the "owner" of the opal without peeking at the memory inside, unfortunately, and on top of that, while the aurora is active, the opals are bit tetchier than usual. During the event, touching an opal in any way might trigger the memory sharing. If your character wouldn't ICly partake in memories but you still want them to share stuff/see other people's stuff, there you go! There's your excuse!

When the event ends and the aurora fades, the opals will stick around, and they'll continue to be functional! Feel free to stock up on memory opals to do memory sharing stuff down the road. They're multi-use, and there aren't any drawbacks to using them.

•••

For those of you interested in plot stuff, we'll be doling out random events throughout the week, so sign up below if you'd like a chance to receive one! These random events will include things like forest spirit encounters and happening upon opals belonging to NPCs. There's nothing dangerous about it—we're just doing sign-ups so we know who's interested in having us bug them! These random events will be posted either to characters' inboxes or to their toplevels on the event page. You're welcome to sign up even if you aren't planning to toplevel at the event.

Check out the header below and fill out the form to sign up! We'll be prioritizing new players and players who haven't yet had a shot at neat plot stuff, but everyone is welcome to toss their hat in the ring.

•••

Additionally, players are welcome to use this post for OOC event plotting! In fact, please do, as not everyone in the game has access to each other's plurks! If you'd like, you can use the small form below to kickstart your plotting plans:

the tl;dr

  • February 16-21: The forest spirits send off their pals on dogsled journeys into the aurora! Memory opals rain down throughout Beacon.

  • The town is super bright (by Beacon standards) throughout the event! It's like overcast levels of light.

  • Each memory opal contains a memory belonging to someone in Beacon, and the memory is focused on a person they have left behind by dying.

  • The opals will stick around after the event ends! They can be reused to your heart's content.

plans: Despite seeming like the most sheltered person to have ever sheltered, Ellever left behind a lot of people when she died. And she's really been missing them lately, since lantern shenanigans made her a little more uncertain about herself and her place in Beacon. D: Below are some ideas for potential people/beings memories could focus on! A lot of them feature monster-types because Ellever's abilities make it easy for her to befriend them. Sooo, if you want memories with some monsters...
Fuzz. Ellever's best friend back home is a truck-sized moth that developed out of a not-quite-corpse, a species that's responsible for the Mothman sightings. She kept him from getting killed by paranoid Zier Security employees as a teenager, and they chill together. Sometimes he also plays fetch. Sometimes. If she has a light-up ball.
Ezra Zier. AKA her adoptive human dad. This could be a traumatic memory, like Ezra insisting that she needs to hide herself away because of potential Endbringer Problems, or it could be a memory like Ezra stumbling across her as a toddler and 'adopting' her.
Ambarish Dewan. Ambarish is the oldest of Ellever's half-eldritch cousins, well over two thousand (he doesn't actually remember how old he is anymore), who possesses the ability to rewrite reality simply by speaking. He speaks in stilted questions and vague statements to prevent this as much as possible. Ellever has only met him a few times, but all of them were occasions in which the two had a long conversation about the Nine (their parents), the state of the world, and the monsters therein.
The Wendigo. Ellever naturally has the best relationship with the Wendigo who is imprisoned in the warehouse at Zier Security (to keep it from eating people, since they haven't found a way to kill it). It's fifteen feet tall and vaguely humanoid with a black deer skull for a head, and it hasn't spoken to any of the staff as of yet. She often is present when it's fed and tries to talk to it, so the Wendigo could be a creepy background while Ellever airs out anxieties and sadness about her heritage (aka would your character like to learn that Ellever is the being who is supposed to bring about the End of the World?) OR the memory could be the terrifying day they caught it!
The Bunyip. The other Big Resident of the warehouse, who lives in a modified aquarium-style tank exhibit. The Bunyip has a long, dog-like face, flippers, large canine teeth, and a mottled form good for camouflage. She's 25 feet long and roughly horse-sized. Ellever found her as part of a traveling sideshow, where she had gotten free and killed almost everyone. Capturing her was a frightening memory, too. Or the memory could be Ellever's vague attempts to train her to balance a ball on its snoot. Either way.

notes: These are just some general memory thoughts! Feel free to plot with me here or on plurk if you want something more specific out of the memories for CR development. c:

Listen, if Riku wants to see that sometimes saving the day means an interdimensional sing along to Queen ft. David Bowie, I can absolutely make that happen.

character(s): sam winchester
plans: moooost of sam's memories are gonna be pretty bittersweet. you have the option of seeing some stuff featuring his family (dad mostly, but also maybe mom! also possibly jack!), old flames of the past (jessica, madison, amy, etc.), and kid-shaped winchester!bros of the past because technically they're completely different people sam has left behind in his old age.

i'm going to be avoiding anything particularly demon-y this time around, just because sam's been through enough at this point in his canon and i'm gonna cut him some slack for this event. this basically means you won't be seeing sam drinking demon blood, or having the time of his life in hell, but anything else is up for discussion!

notes: because sam is brand new to town, he's definitely here to mingle with literally everyone. come at me if you're feeling like exploring some memories with sammy! c':

I'm gonna jump in here to plot because relevancy

I feel like the Lazarus pit is familiar territory, and Bruce can already imagine both how much he's treasure having a family and how much he's hurt Jason afterwards. so I'm open to anything to be honest, if you wanted to throw a curve ball. I know if the subject of the pit comes up there'll be a Conversation that follows that might not go... quite as you expect. and idk how that will effect their cr but I know you and me both love messy so rip lmao

player: Kelly
character(s): Kylo Ren
plans: No concrete plans, but he needs to meet people and make friends and I feel like this could be a great start.
notes: Kylo's memories range from a happy childhood to extremely traumatic, both for him and for the other person involved in the memory, so anything is fair game. A lot of them will involve his family, the Force, you know... usual star wars stuff. Please feel free to msg me on Discord at Kelly#3575 or on [plurk.com profile] drummingmagpie and let me know if you have any sort of specific memory you may want to see from Kylo. I'm extremely open to whatever! I'll let people pick what they want to see from him, just give me a heads up either in the tag or ooc!

Same for you! I'm good with any and all spoilers on the receiving end, too! Luna respects him as well and thinks of him as a very good friend, she trusts him so she won't have any issue with showing him things.

Dude I sure don't remember what we said. You can totally find two opals though if you want dad trade and also hospital arson plus doctor assault all in the name of retaliation for not helping Law. Cao Pi has learned the most about Law so far out of anyone (which, lmao oh you) so he might as well see more!

Death of the Family is different from Death in the Family, but yeah we could definitely do a Talia memory to catch the pit stuff.

The memory from Death of the Family would be from when Joker poison's Jason with nerve gas. Bruce stays by Jason's side the whole time, kind of keeping vigil for him?

And when he comes out of it, Bruce hugs him and tells him he's so relieved he's alive, and he wasn't a disappointment.

It is LITERALLY one of the last positive memories with Bruce.

Aside from maybe the start of Rebirth, before things go off the wall crazy.

do we need to actually delve into how shitty Cao Cao is?

because I can give you an epic slam on Cao Cao if you really want it. I mean besides the historical "but father how can people pay proper respects if I don't reveal the location of your secret tomb?" bit.
