EVENT INFO: BOTTOM OF THE RIVER

the basics

Rain falls. It falls, and falls, and falls some more, covering Beacon in dark, rushing water. Cut off from your friends, what will you protect - and how will you do it?

the details

As covered in the April monthly roundup, the flooding is intense and catastrophic and will last the entire remainder of the month. The event will be slightly backdated so as to give characters from April 15th-17th to prepare for a rainstorm they were alerted to thanks to the weather station - however, there is no clear indication of how long the rain will last or how intense it will be.

On April 19-30, the rains pour down, dividing Beacon into three sections with the rivers as hard boundaries. Whichever side of the river you're on when the rain starts, that's where you stay for the remainder of the event - even if you can fly or teleport. Strange! All existing bridges will be washed downriver, along with pretty much anything not completely bolted down - and even then, the powerful floodwaters might rip the bolts out, too.

Two signup headers are available below: DEFENSE and INJURY. Under DEFENSE, please suggest a building or location your character is going to try and prepare for the flood, and please feel free to elaborate on what they will be doing! If your character is going to help defend a location already suggested by another player, feel free to add a +1 under their header with whatever additional details you would like to add. Remember the more characters at a location, the more likely is it to survive with minimal damage. Some locations will not survive the torrent. Please submit DEFENSE comments by 11:59 PDT (GMT -7) April 24 if possible as these will inform what happens in May game events.

Under INJURY, sign up to volunteer your character for a good ol' Beacon bone-bashing. Severity of injuries will be RNGed and some characters may escape entirely unscathed. If there are any hard limits or squicks feel free to let us know and we will avoid those sorts of injuries for your character entirely. Death is currently NOT a risk. You'll see why later. Feel free to submit INJURY comments through the end of the event. We will try to get to these as soon as we can so you can use them in threads if you like - completely optional!

THE INVINCIBLE

This has always been Rosi's priority since it's centrally located. He'll be working on re-digging the trench around the building to help redirect the floodwater (with no idea that it will be Not Enough but you know) and will be doing some heavy lifting to get food and supplies on the ground floor up to an empty couple of rooms on the second floor.

the church

The first thing Masaomi's going to think about (once he knows Rosi has The Invincible covered) is that people come back to life in the church, and if it's under water... Not great.

He has no idea what he's doing, so he'll probably just copy Rosi's trenches and toss anything resembling a sandbag into a makeshift barrier along the inner trench edge. He will definitely need help because he is a regular dumb teenage boy with regular dumb teenage boy muscles.

JUNKYARD (+ DOG)

Haven't quite locked down where Sora's going to be, but Ephrim's going to make a quick decision to take care of the junkyard himself. He really likes there to be a handy source of metal for his own purposes! (Yes, he is going to save the doggie.)

He will spend the vast majority of his prep time growing his plants into the junkyard, locking the soil into place and reinforcing whatever fencing is there. I don't know how successful he'll be given that he only has three days to prepare, but I want to think he'll at least have a weatherproofed and locked down area for him and the dog to hang out. He'll bring enough food for both himself and the dog until the storm passes.

There's so much stuff in here and it's also a big place where everyone can shelter, so Minimus is going to ensure that this place isn't totally wrecked.

GREENHOUSE

Duster is going to keep the plants safe (Since he's from a farming village and would know a thing or two about plants and water) but otherwise he could use the extra hands in transporting the stuff to higher ground!

TOWN HALL

Well okay he's not defending the whole dingy-dang thing but Fitz is totally going to get stuff in the public archives/records somewhere safe. Based on the results of a coin flip he'll attempt to relocate things to the Invincible.

THE LIBRARY (+ LIBRARIAN)

His concerns will be less to save the books and more the Librarian and the building itself. (Sorry, Librarian, he knows that if he tried to save every important book, he'd be trying to save ALL of them! Even he knows he can't do that.)

He's got a few tarps, so he'll be able to protect a few important books about cooking, his own history, and any info relevant to Beacon, but his efforts will be mostly focused on keeping the library standing and the Librarian safe and dry. He cannot swim, so he'll not only be stuck on his side of the river, he'll likely be stuck in the library until the water goes down. EDIT: im a fucking moron and forgot this child can literally fly, he’ll be raiding a couple of cabins for food but will otherwise be fine.

Okiedoke two questions:

One, what exactly HAPPENS when one tries to fly over a river? Stone is probably gonna at least give it a go unless it's likely to get him killed or something.

Two, in the preparations, Bucky is gonna ask Rastus if river-water/rain-water can actually extinguish the bonfire. The answer will affect how many torches they scramble to make and put in higher-up places, I imagine...

plans: I don't have any plans for D.Va right now besides her trying to get her very unfinished mecha somewhere safe at first. She's going to be looking for somewhere to store it where the flooding won't damage it during the 15-17. After that, she'll be helping out wherever she's needed. Probably the Invincible, but I'm okay to put her wherever she's needed.
notes: I'm totally okay with her getting hurt during this, but I would like to avoid broken bones and death if at all possible. She arrived injured and probably wouldn't be too happy about doing it again. In the end, she'll do what's needed regardless of the dangers, but I would like to stay away from it if it's possible. Anything else is okay.

Bucky is focused on the Invincible, and the nearby Bonfire if possible. Even if they have to just load each room up with torches to preserve fire. He'll be talking to Rastus probably to find out how much danger there is. Surely the guy's seen big rains/floods before? >.> But on the whole, his thing is gonna be moving supplies and torches upstairs into this building. (And his stuff. He's got one big trunk of his most precious things, it's coming here for the interim just in case.)
Stone may live in the Invincible, but having two characters in the same place is boring, so he's gonna be focused on the Landmark and also on search and rescue, cuz you know, he flies and he's very large and can pluck people out of floodwaters. He's also good for carrying big things like logs or sandbags or whatever. He's lived through floods before, helped with groundling cities that have flooded, he knows his shit here.
notes: Not aiming for Bucky to get hurt. He's had enough trauma lately. Still deciding on Stone.

plans: Pudding is Not Happy that supplies in Beacon are scant. She's new this month and fresh from a decadent wedding in a land of plenty, so "we can't really grow/hunt our own food" is claxons blaring. The moment there's warning that flooding is imminent, she'll be on moving as much food as possible as high as possible as fast as possible. Once the flooding starts she'll be at The Invincible. She also knows how to waterproof food packaging - especially in barrels and crates - for sea travel, so she'll be trying to do as much of that as possible too, and teach other people if there's time! She can't move much that's heavy herself but she CAN pack foodstuffs into containers, seal the containers with liners, wax, tar, etc., and direct other people on how best to do the same.

Her experience with open seafaring is limited, but she has some knowledge of how to do on boats. She's not gonna be good for actually tying knots that was not an intentional pun, but identifying strong points in the rafters for anchors, designing basic rigging, and directing other people to make cargo nets to keep the food crates/barrels from drifting out of doors and windows? That she can do!

Also if you want a chance for a peek at Crazy Pudding, all you have to do is fuck up under this direction 8D Sweet girl in take-charge mode has a non-zero chance of losing her shit if you endanger the food.

eta PROBABLY IMPORTANT: Pudding cannot swim. Cannot. Goes fully immobile and sinks like a stone. In fact she goes weak and sinks like a stone once she's about halfway submerged - if she's holding on for dear life and the water's rushing in, suddenly she's completely incapable of holding onto anything. You wouldn't let a teen girl drown, would you?


notes: I am a very slow disabled potato but I'm 100% here for whatever I can get Pudding into. Let me know if you want to handwave something at the intro, Night Market, etc. before the event, if you wanna fast-track a threadstart to mid-action, whatever makes it easy for you!

I am p sure she at least knows who Bucky is given the daily meals at the Invincible, and her obsession with the food too. He's helping with goods moving, and is in fact big and strong, and takes orders pretty well :P

Also good for hoisting her out of the water by the scruff of the neck sometime.

plans: Ephrim's looking out for his niche interests here! He's going to save the pup and the metal and p much nothing else. If anyone needs something vitally important chained down and whatever it is is fairly waterproof... Ephrim will make no promises, but he can try and lock things up to the size of maybe a large table to the rest of the junkyard so they don't get washed away. For the sake of fairness, I'll also say that he won't be able to take care of any NPCs but the dog. :(

I'm having trouble deciding where Sora will be! I would love to put him at the Landmark for that sweet sweet CR, but if the Landmark, the bonfire, and the church are accounted for, Sora's going to want to make sure that the Librarian's okay, which means that he'll probably be trapped in the village! He doesn't have much flooding experience, but he does have, like, a shitton of tarps that he'll use to keep things dry! He's got super strength and will try to secure the bottom floor of the library as home base, but once things start getting wet, he'll probably relocate both himself and the Librarian to the top floor. No promises that the library or the Librarian will make it out of there, but he is gonna Do His Best... if I don't just stick him in the Landmark HAHA

plans: Ardyn will be... "defending"? "Defending" The Landmark which in his lingo means "not actively destroying". He'll be slinking around putting in the bare minimum effort and probably barking orders at people who get too close.

plans: Fjord is going to be following Masaomi and helping cover the church! As usual he has his Control Water once per day, and can cast Water Breathing on 10 people within a 30 foot radius, which lasts for 24 hours! Most of his powers revolve around being an experienced sailor/seaside youth and knowing roughly what to do when shit floods and water gets where it's not supposed to but He Is Useful.

notes: FJORD CAN'T DROWN - one of his eldritch invocations grants him permanent water-breathing. So if someone falls in the river near him he will absolutely dive in after them. ALSO - while I don't intend on him getting injured, I did sign him up for it 8D you never know

plans: Duster is going to protect the greenhouse and likely get injured at some point (it's out in the middle of nowhere and there's glass) but otherwise keep to himself. plans: strokes chin so far just working on keeping the landmark hotel safe. he'll work on reinforcing the doors and windows because he lives in that hotel damn it and it took him a while to work up the courage to settle down. letting all that progress get washed away... no thank you!! this is actually something he's going to be determined about. i'd love for him to work with other characters who have the hotel as their priority! also, save the bar. a good reminder from carmilla.

carmilla's biggest interest is the landmark because she's the sort to self preserve over everything. she's very strong and will probably try to reinforce the foundation when nobody is looking. she really would not want to dig trenches but she would prob help sandbag. and just move the entire bar out of harm's way, SOMEONE SAVE THE BOOZE. she lives on the top floor so that might be a dry place and a good excuse to force her to let people in her space, but also her penthouse must be a disaster there has to be better places to stay just based on that...

matthew however is closer to town. he is concerned mostly with the church, but secondary concerns include protecting the bonfire and helping to lug around supplies to safety at the invincible. when the rain hits he will probably be at the church or wherever elektra is, though.
